Methods: Measurements were four reliable questionnaires measuring academic stress, social support, entrapment, and depression. Data were collected from students in 17 high schools in Seoul. Results: Students (n=5,346) completing the questionnaires indicated depression & entrapment from academic stress. Depression was more prevalent in girls, those whose parents' household income was less than two million won, who did not live with father or mother or both due to divorce, separation, or death, and those who smoked or used alcohol. Entrapment was more prevalent in students similar to cases of depression and in seniors. According to the proposed path model, 48.6% of depression was explained by academic stress, social support, and entrapment. The indirect effect of entrapment as a mediator between academic stress and depression was verified and larger than the direct effect of academic stress on depression. Conclusion: Considering levels of depression and entrapment demonstrated by these students, better mental health programs with diverse strategies should be developed for their psychological well-being.

Academic stress level of all the subjects was not high. In terms of academic performance and its relations with nutrient intake, the more the amount of nutrient intake, the higher the academic performance. Especially, it was true for the energy, protein, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and n-6 fatty acid intakes (p < 0.05). The overall academic performance was higher for those who eating-out less frequently. Children with higher comprehensive dietary habit scores have shown better academic performance (p < 0.05). Less stress implied to those shown higher academic achievement while those with relatively poor academic performance showed high stress level since their grade did not improve as much as they anticipated. In conclusion, the academic achievement was higher for those who have a better nutritional status, better dietary habits, and lower stress levels. Therefore, it is critical for nutritionists, parents, and teachers to improve the nutritional status and dietary habits as well as to help them manage their stress levels, which will eventually contribute to an enhanced academic performance.

  • This article compares the psychological and behavioral profiles of adolescents on probation and high school students. A total of 253 adolescents on probation and 257 high school students completed an open-ended questionnaire developed by the present researchers and structured questionnaire that assessed moral disengagement and self-efficacy developed by Bandura (1995), delinquent behavior and academic achievement. Adolescents on probation reported that they engaged in delinquent behavior due to the fault of others and they were angry for being forced to be on probation. They are not likely to take responsibility and morally disengage from their delinquent actions. When compared to high school students, adolescents on probation are likely to report low self-efficacy, low academic grade, and less likely to feel proud of themselves. They are more likely to meet their friends in Internet and video game rooms and less likely to focus on academic achievement. Results of ANCOVA indicate that adolescents on probation have higher scores on moral disengagement, social efficacy, but lower score on efficacy for self-regulated learning. They are more likely to run away from home and have lower academic grade. The results of the discriminant analysis indicate that running away from home, social efficacy and moral disengagement are predictive of adolescents on probation and academic achievement and efficacy for self-regulated learning are predictive of high school students.

Second, students in potential and high-risk groups who are highly dependent on smart devices have significantly lower school adaptation compared to those in the safety group. Third, high-risk students showed significantly lower academic performance compared to those in the potential risk group and general group. Based on these findings, it was suggested that for elementary school students who rely on smart devices, various learning support and national efforts such as counseling for school life adaptation are needed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the food hygiene and safety awareness of academic and specialized high school students, in order to provide basic materials characterization and demonstrate the need for differentiated food hygiene safety education by type of school in the Chungnam area. This study shows that the academic high school students attach more importance to Food Hygiene and Safety than the specialized high school students, but that the latter think it is easier get information about food safety and are more confident in choosing safe food than the former. Regardless of the type of school, 50.5% and 49.3% of the students believed that the safety of the agricultural and livestock products and processed food distributed for sale in the country is acceptable, respectively. 40.7% and 17.2% of the students answered that school food hygiene safety education is required and strongly required, respectively. Compared to the specialized high school students (average 3.17), the academic high school students (average 2.81) responded that they did not receive sufficient food safety education. Those students who were confident in choosing safe food showed a positive correlation with those who were confident in the hygienic handling of food (r = .662) and with those who have sufficient education on food safety (r = .504). We suggest that different food hygiene safety education is needed by academic and specialized high school students until they have sufficient confidence in the hygienic choosing and handling of food.
