A Study on Character Education in Mathematics Subject (수학 교과에서 인성교육에 대한 일고찰)

  • Character means a person's nature and the mind and behavior to lead a desirable life personally and socially. Also character can be changed with education and environment. Therefore character education will be possible to do practice through various educational activities and life experiences in school. In other words, we think that students will get person's character required to lead a desirable life personally and socially beyond what they just learn knowledge and skill, enter the higher schools and succeed one's way. This study accepts merits of existing character education policy through subject(mathematics) education and focus on direction for character education through subject(mathematics) education for systematic and synthetic approach for practice of character education. For this, we will see applicability of the plan for character education in the whole subject education, in particular focusing on cases of character education in mathematics subject.

A Study on the Problem Solving Competency Represented in the New Seventh Grade Mathematics Textbook (2015 개정 수학 교과서에 반영된 문제 해결 역량 요소 탐색 - 중학교 1학년 함수 영역을 중심으로 -)

  • The six core competencies included in the mathematics curriculum revised in 2015 are problem solving, reasoning, communication, attitude and practice, creativity and convergence, information processing. In particular, the problem solving is very important for students' enhancing much higher mathematical thinking. Based on this competency, this study selected the four elements of the problem solving such as problem solving process, cooperative problem solving, mathematical modeling, problem posing. And also this study selected the domain of function which is comprised of the content of the coordinate plane, the graph, proportionality in the seventh grade mathematics textbook. By the subject of the ten kinds of textbook, this study examined how the four elements of the problem solving competency were shown in each textbook.

In particular, the communication is very important for students' representing their own thinking and enhancing much higher mathematical thinking. Based on this competency, this study selected the four elements of the communication such as the understanding of mathematical representation, development and transition of mathematical representation, the representation of his own thinking, the understanding of the others' thinking. And also this study selected the domain of function which is comprised of the content of the coordinate plane, the graph, proportionality in the seventh grade mathematics textbook. By the subject of the ten kinds of textbook, this study examined how the four elements of the communication competency were shown in each textbook.

A Comparative Analysis of School Mathematics Curricula in Korea, China, Japan, and USA (한국·중국·일본·미국의 초등학교 수학과 교육과정 비교·분석 -도형 영역을 중심으로-)

  • This study compares and contrasts elementary mathematics curricula of Korea, China, Japan, and USA, as a part of efforts to compose contents of global elementary mathematics. This paper analyzed the similarities and the differences of mathematical contents in the domain of geometry. On the basis of this comparative analysis, this paper included implications that are expected to be informative in the revision of the Korean mathematics curriculum.

Analysis of Research Trends in SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics Using Topic Modeling (토픽모델링을 활용한 SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics의 연구 동향 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the research status and trends related to the industrial mathematics based on text mining techniques with a sample of 4910 papers collected in the SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics from 1970 to 2019. The R program was used to collect titles, abstracts, and key words from the papers and to analyze topic modeling techniques based on LDA algorithm. As a result of the coherence score on the collected papers, 20 topics were determined optimally using the Gibbs sampling methods. The main results were as follows. First, studies on industrial mathematics were conducted in a variety of mathematics fields, including computational mathematics, geometry, mathematical modeling, topology, discrete mathematics, probability and statistics, with a focus on analysis and algebra. Second, 5 hot topics (mathematical biology, nonlinear partial differential equation, discrete mathematics, statistics, topology) and 1 cold topic (probability theory) were found based on time series regression analysis. Third, among the fields that were not reflected in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum, numeral system, matrix, vector in space, and complex numbers were extracted as the contents to be covered in the high school mathematical curriculum. Finally, this study suggested strategies to activate industrial mathematics in Korea, described the study limitations, and proposed directions for future research.

A Study on the Prospective Mathematics Secondary Teachers' Introduction of Concepts of Function (예비 중등 수학교사들의 함수 개념의 도입 방식 탐색)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and present what aspects of the concept of function prospective mathematics secondary teachers emphasize when designing a class that introduces the concept of function using curriculum and textbooks. For this purpose, virtual instruction and reflections on virtual instruction were analyzed. The results are as follows. The prospective mathematics secondary teachers consider and introduce the concepts of function as correspondences and processes. Their conception of function was consistently observed during virtual instruction and reflections on virtual instruction. The prospective mathematics secondary teachers' conception of function was closely related to the form of expressing functions. These results provi e implications for prospective mathematics secondary teachers' education for introducing the concept of function based on the dependent relation between variables presented in the 2015 revision of the national mathematics curriculum.

An Exploration of the Improvement Direction for Decimal Fractional Multiplication Unit in Textbooks (소수 곱셈 단원의 교과서 개선 방향 탐색)

  • Although the multiplication of decimal fractions is expected to be easy for students to understand because of the similarity to natural numbers multiplication in computing methods, students show many errors in the multiplication of decimal fractions. This is a result of the instruction focused more on skill mastery than conceptual understanding. This study is a basic study for effectively developing a unit of multiplication of decimal fractions. For this purpose, we analyzed the curriculums' performance standards, significance in teaching-learning and evaluation, contents and methods for teaching multiplication of decimal fractions from the 7th curriculum to the revised curriculum of 2015 and the textbooks' activities and lessons. Further, we analyzed preceding studies and introductory books to suggest effective directions for developing teaching unit. As a result of the analysis, three implications were obtained: First, a meaningful instruction for estimation is needed. Second, it is necessary to present a visual model suitable for understanding the meaning of decimal multiplication. Third, the process of formalizing an algorithms for multiplying decimal fractions needs to be diversified.

A Study on the Application of Calculation Method According to the Standard of Elementary School in Elementary School (초등학교 수학과 성취기준에 따른 계산기의 활용 방안)

  • It is the 6th curriculum that first officially mentioned the use of calculators in elementary mathematics education in Korea. Since then, the curriculum has been more widely used than in the beginning. However, in actual textbooks, it is still not enough to see the utilization situation, and guidance in this textbook is very scarce. In particular, there is no relevant study that meets the standards of achievement of the curriculum. The purpose of this study is to investigate the contents of the research on the use of the calculator in the course of the curriculum change after the 6th curriculum, and to present the complex calculation, mathematical concept, mathematical principles and rules, mathematical problem solving. In addition, the course is presented in the textbooks that are appropriate for the achievement criteria and the application process for each topic.

An Analysis on the Students' Achievement in the 'Speed of Objects' Chapter based on the Integrated Science and Mathematics Classes for Elementary School Students (수학과 과학을 통합 지도한 초등학교 '물체의 속력' 수업에서 학생의 학습 성취 분석)

  • Mathematics and science are very closely related. Among the science areas, physic is strongly linked with mathematics. As the related mathematics skills were alloted later than the science contents in the national curriculum, students often suffer from science classes. Accordingly, an opinion have been claimed to teach the related mathematics skills prior to the science classes. However, it would be hard to arrange all science and mathematics contents in order. Instead of that, in this research, we taught students mathematics contents that are crucial for learning speed through science classes. We called that teaching strategy an integrated science and mathematics class. Then, we examined students' achievement in science as well as skills of mathematics to know the effectiveness of the strategy. We found that the average mathematics score of the whole class went up meaningfully. We also found that their science achievement was above than basic level. Moreover, the homeroom teacher of the students observed 3 aspects which showed the students were better than previous students. Finally, we divided the students into 4 groups by their science and mathematics achievement score and interviewed each group. As a result, we knew that interesting and confidence in science and mathematics quite exerted influence on their achievement.
