  • This study addressed ways in which poverty factors are associated with child physical aggression and how these relationships are moderated by parenting behavior. Using a longitudinal approach, parental poverty status was measured when children were 5 months; the Parenting Behaviour Questionnaire (Boivin et al., 2000) was administered when children were 17 months; and mothers reported child physical aggression behaviors when the children were 60 months. Using structure equation modeling analyses, the results of this study confirmed that parenting behavior is a mediator of the linkage between poverty and child physical aggression, showing the urgent need for early intervention for impoverished children.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the trends of research on the effects of psychosocial intervention related to children with epilepsy. 454 articles were retrieved from databases (Ovid-MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, CINAHL, The Cochrane library, KMbase, and Koreamed), and 7 articles met our criterias. Interventions were classified into four categories: education; counseling; cognitive-behavioral therapy; and physical activity. The target outcomes of the interventions were quite diverse. Each intervention showed some benefits for epilepsy-related health outcomes, but each study had methodological weaknesses, including incomplete information, poorly defined or validated outcome measures, small sample sizes, and design limitations.

  • This study was conducted to synthesize sexual violence prevention programs by systematic review and to establish an effective program for its prevention. Existing studies of domestic sexual violence prevention programs were retrieved using RISS, KISS, and NDSL from 2000 until August 2018. Of 1125 studies identified, 22 met the inclusion criteria. Study participants were children to adults and students with disabilities. The methods of intervention varied according to the characteristics of the participants and included lectures, discussions, role plays, puppet shows, songs and campaigns. The contents of the intervention were related to the concepts of sexual violence, sexual violence coping, sexual harassment, and gender equality, while the main variables influencing the results of intervention were sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, sexual violence knowledge, sexual violence coping and gender equality consciousness. In most of the studies was effective. However, for some studies, sexual awareness and sexual attitude were not significant influencing factors. Future sexual violence prevention programs should include gender equality and bystander concepts, that can recognize social responsibility for sexual violence.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a songwriting intervention would improve self-expression of adolescents with cochlear implants (CI). In this study, the songwriting intervention was designed to incorporate previous research findings on music perception of individuals with CIs and to provide musical experiences in which adolescents with CIs could be successful in using music resources for their self-expression. Accordingly, stepwise songwriting procedures were constructed and music technology (i.e., GarageBand as an iPad application) was used. Two adolescents with CIs participated in the intervention once a week for 8 weeks. Changes in level of participation in songwriting tasks, verbal expression, self-reports about the songwriting process were examined. The results demonstrated that the participants showed increased attempts to express themselves via music making. It was also shown that their negative perception of their ability to verbally express themselves decreased. They were observed as becoming more competent in creating music by deciding how various musical elements should be played and making rhythm or melodic patterns by themselves. These results indicate that the songwriting intervention can facilitate self-expression of adolescents with CIs. Further implications in terms of the psychosocial needs of individuals with CIs are presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the rationale and format of music therapy interventions with patients receiving hospice or palliative care in Korea. Through this analysis, I examined whether the music intervention used was based on a valid rationale and represented the professionalism expected of today's music therapy interventions. A total of 12 studies that met the selection criteria were identified, and the overall characteristics of each study and its format were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the rationale for each study and its format were influenced by the author's research field. The analysis also showed that the research on music-based interventions in hospice or palliative care settings was insufficient and involved a mix of professional and nonprofessional interventions. The results of this study suggest that importance of researchers possessing professional competence which requires offering a clear justification for their choice of interventions, music, and instruments. Additionally, these results emphasize the need for further development of evidence-based music therapy approaches in hospice and palliative care settings as the role of music in supporting patients in these environments has gained increasing recognition and validation.
