The purpose of this study is described in detail as follows. First, I would like to define what digital transformation is in the maritime transport sector. Second, it is intended to derive success factors for digital transformation in the maritime transportation field by examining various preceding studies related to digital transformation. Finally, in order to derive priorities for the derived success factors, an AHP analysis model is built and an expert survey is conducted for practical experts in the maritime transportation field. Based on the survey results, we would like to provide guidelines on what factors should be considered first among the success factors of digital transformation in the maritime transportation sector. In this study, in order to derive the priority of success factors for digital transformation in the maritime transportation field, the hierarchical structure was divided into four high-level evaluation items(strategic factors, organizational culture and human factors, technology factors, and environmental factors) and 21 sub-evaluation items. A relative evaluation method of weighting items among AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) was applied. AHP analysis of 24 questionnaires with a consistency ratio of 0.1 or less in order to increase the accuracy of information among questionnaires collected through maritime transportation related university professors, research groups, shipping companies, container terminals, and experts engaged in shipping related IT companies was carried out. As a result of the analysis, the priority of the first-tier factors for the success factors of digital transformation in the maritime transport sector was shown in the order of strategic factors, organizational culture and human factors, technology factors, and environmental factors. In addition, when looking at the priorities of 21 detailed items, it was found that the development of new business models, the creation of an active future digital strategy, and the leadership of the chief digital officer were high.
This study analyses the necessity of the large-size shipyard and explores competitiveness factors of it. Furthermore, the competitiveness is evaluated and the economic feasibility of building and operation of shipyard is examined. As a result of AHP analysis of the determining factors of the competitiveness of the repairing shipyard, the importance of the factors was found in the order of arrival and departure safety, repair technology, dock and wharf facilities, repair cost, repair period (on time delivery), and repair parts supply. Moving distance, repair service quality, repair parts supply, arrival and departure safety, repair technology, dock and quay wall facilities, and repair period (on time delivery) were identified as key factors in the AHP analysis for competitiveness of the Busan Port repair shipyard to be built in the future. As a result of the analysing economic feasibility, the net present value of the Busan Port repair shipyard construction and operation investment project was KRW 435.6 billion, and the internal rate of return was 9.8%, higher than the social discount rate (4.5%), and the cost-benefit ratio (B/C) was high at 1.167. As a result of the study, the necessity and economic feasibility of the Busan Port repair shipyard are sufficiently ensured, and the competitiveness assessment was highly positive.

This study is based on Degree of Recognition and AHP surveys for experts, this study investigates changes in the demand of seafarers in response to changes in the shipping industry environment in which Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships(MASS) emerge according to the application of the fourth industrial revolution technology to ships, and it looks into changes in seafarers' skills. It also analyzes and proposes a plan for cultivating seafarers accordingly. As a result of Degree of Recognition and AHP analysis, it is analyzed that a new training system is required because the current training and education system may cover the job competencies of emergency response, caution and danger navigation, general sailing, cargo handling, seaworthiness maintenance, emergency response, and ship maintenance and management, but jobs such as remote control, monitoring diagnosis, device management capability, and big data analysis require competency for unmanned and shore based control.By evaluating the importance of change factors in the duties of seafarers in Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships, this study provides information on seafarers educational institutions response strategies for nurturing seafarers and prioritization of resource allocation, etc. The importance of factors was compared and evaluated to suggest changes in the duties of seafarers and methods of nurturing seafarers according to the introduction of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships.It is expected that this study is meaningful as it systematically derived the duties and competency factors of seafarers of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships from a practical point of view and analyzed the perception level of each relevant expert to diagnose expert-level responses to the introduction of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships.
This study forecasted the manpower demand of eco-friendly smart shipbuilding, whose importance and weight are increasing according to the environmental regulations of the IMO and the spread of the 4th industrial revolution technology. It predicted the shipbuilding industry manpower by applying various models of trend analysis and time series analysis based on data from 2000 to 2020 of Statistics Korea. It was found that the prediction applying geometric mean had the smallest gap among the trend and time series analysis methods in comparing between forecast results and actual data for the past 5 years. Therefore, the demand for manpower in the shipbuilding industry was predicted by using the geometric mean method. In addition, the manpower demand of smart eco-friendly ships wast forecasted by using the 2018 and 2020 manpower survey results of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and reflecting the trend of manpower increase in the shipbuilding industry. The result of forecasting showed that 62,001 person in 2025 and 85,035 people in 2030. This study is expected to contribute to the adjustment of manpower supply and demand and the training professional manpower in the future by increasing the accuracy of forecasting for high value-added eco-friendly smart ships.
This study aims to analyze the impact of ESG activities on the corporate performance of logistics companies in Korea. To achieve this, the study examines the factors influencing the adoption and implementation of ESG activities, assesses the extent to which ESG activities enhance corporate trust and image, and empirically analyzes the effect of ESG implementation on the corporate performance of logistics companies. An online survey was conducted using Google Forms for Korean logistics companies, and a total of 463 data sets were utilized for PLS structural equation analysis using the SmartPLS 4.0 software tools. The findings of the study are as follows: Firstly, external pressure, specifically government pressure, significantly influences environmental responsibility activities, while investor pressure significantly affects social responsibility activities and governance responsibility activities. Additionally, internal management pressures significantly impact environmental responsibility activities, and employees have a significant influence on all ESG responsibility activities. Secondly, environmental responsibility activities positively affect corporate image, whereas social and governance responsibility activities influence trust and corporate image. Thirdly, trust and corporate image demonstrate significant effects on both financial and non-financial performance. Fourthly, trust significantly mediates the relationship between social responsibility, governance responsibility, and non-financial performance, while image mediates the connection between ESG responsibility and both financial and non-financial performance. The contribution of this study lies in providing practical insights for logistics companies to actively promote ESG activities, thereby establishing a reputation for being environmentally, socially, and governance responsible and gaining customer trust. By doing so, this study aims to raise awareness of the importance of ESG activities in the logistics industry and help companies recognize their significance for sustainable management
The Autonomous ships are equipped with a function to judge and navigate the sea conditions on their own, so the job of the ship officer who operates it changes. The educational curriculum to nurture ship officer with the ability to operate and manage autonomous ships must also be changed. This study aimed to develop the curriculum for training autonomous ship officer by using the Delphi survey method suitable for predicting the uncertain future. Among the current 61 subjects for training ship officer identified in the Delphi survey, 32 subjects with high importance should be maintained in the training for autonomous ship officer, and subjects with low importance should be abolished or integrated into other subjects. These subjects were collectively referred to as 'general courses'. The expert panel of the Delphi survey suggested 42 items as new subjects, with 18 items of 'high', 14 items of 'middle', and 10 items of 'low'. Through in-depth analysis of these items by experts, 27 subjects were adjusted and three courses were proposed : 1)'Basic course(10 courses)' for developing basic capabilities such as basic theories for understanding advanced technology and information applied to autonomous ships, 2)'Job course(10 courses)' for practical competency directly related to autonomous ship operation, 3)'Intensive course(7 subjects)' for fostering land remote operators of autonomous ships. Since the introduction and spread of autonomous ships will progress rapidly, research to develop and supplement autonomous ship pilot training courses should be continued by reflecting the level of autonomous navigation of autonomous ships.
This study examined the current status of the number of ships and marine officers in the coastal shipping in order to successfully solve the problem of the shortage of manpower. Then it forecast the number of costal ships by ship size and the demand of coastal marine officers by applying the crew quota of the Ship Personnel Act. In addition, The supply of manpower was predicted using the Markov model, reflecting the number of turnover and retirements by year, as well as the number of new entrants and incomer from ocean-going shipping. As a result of forecasts, the demand for coastal marine officers is forecast to increase from 6,057 in 2023 to 7,079 in 2030, and the supply is forecast to decrease from 5,771 in 2023 to 5,130 in 2030, showing that the manpower of shortage is worsening. This study analyzed the problem of the shortage of lower-level licensed coastal marine officers and objectively forecast the demand and supply of manpower through quantitative analysis. In order to resolve the manpower shortage, it was proposed to expand the training and supply of 5th and 6th grade low-level licensed coastal marine officers. This study will be able to provide useful data to solve the problem of shortage of manpower for coastal shipping.
This study analyzed the connectivity of the dry bulk carrier market before and after COVID-19 to examine the impact of COVID-19 on the global shipping market. Using the Quantile Time Frequency Connectedness methodology, we analyzed the dynamic connectedness of major dry bulk indices: the Capesize Index (BCI), Supramax Index (BSI), Panamax Index (BPI), and Handysize Index (BHSI). The results are as follows. First, the total spillover connectedness of the dry bulk carrier market increased during the entire period and in the short term after the outbreak of COVID-19, while it slightly decreased in the long term. Second, the roles among the indices changed according to market conditions, with COVID-19 causing the BPI to change from a net receiver to a net transmitter in the short term and the BSI in the long term, affecting net spillover connectedness. Third, it was observed that long-term connectivity tended to increase more than short-term connectedness under extreme conditions. Fourth, the phenomenon of strengthened connectedness under extreme market conditions was confirmed. These results provide important insights into understanding short-term market shocks and long-term stability trends, demonstrating that the connectedness among dry bulk carrier markets strengthens in global crisis situations such as COVID-19. This provides a basis for assessing the resilience and vulnerability of the shipping market and offers useful information for investors and policymakers in crisis management and investment strategy formulation.
This study examined the impact of internal and external motivation (enjoyment, challenge, sense of accomplishment, recognition, reward) and psychological ownership of members of a land transportation company on organizational effectiveness (job satisfaction, organizational commitment), and internal and external motivation and organizational commitment. We aim to analyze the moderating effect of psychological ownership in the relationship between effectiveness. To this end, a survey was conducted targeting employees working at land transportation companies, and the results of the analysis are summarized as follows. First, among the intrinsic motivation factors of land transportation companies, challenge and sense of accomplishment had a significant impact on job satisfaction of organizational effectiveness, and enjoyment was confirmed to have an impact at a significant level. And only the sense of accomplishment had a significant effect on organizational commitment, while enjoyment and challenge had no effect. Second, recognition, an extrinsic motivator, had a significant effect on both job satisfaction and organizational commitment of organizational effectiveness, and compensation had an effect on job satisfaction but had no effect on organizational commitment. Third, psychological ownership had a significant effect on both job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Fourth, psychological ownership was found to have no moderating effect in the relationship between intrinsic motivation and organizational effectiveness, enjoyment in the relationship between challenge, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment, and to have a moderating effect in the relationship with a sense of accomplishment. Fifth, psychological ownership had a moderating effect in the relationship between extrinsic motivation and organizational effectiveness, recognition, compensation, and job satisfaction, but was found to have no moderating effect in the relationship with organizational commitment. Therefore, there is a need to improve management performance by inducing organizational commitment through job satisfaction and subsequently leading to psychological ownership.
This study investigates the factors contributing to price fluctuations in the shipscrapping market, the final stage in a vessel's life cycle. Shipping companies make decisions on ship dismantling based on factors such as declining freight rates, increasing vessel age leading to higher costs, or compliance with new environmental regulations. Utilizing the FMOLS (Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares) and VECM (Vector Error Correction Model) methodologies, the research explores the long-term elasticities of factors influencing shipscrapping prices and examines short-term causal relationships. Using a time series dataset spanning from December 2015 to April 2023, covering a total of 90 months, the study focuses on the shipscrapping prices of Capesize vessels in India and Bangladesh, which constitute a significant portion of the shipbreaking market. The findings indicate that, in the long term, shipscrapping prices are closely related to global scrap prices, 20-year-old secondhand Capesize vessel prices, newbuilding prices, and exchange rates. In terms of short-term causal relationships, an increase in global scrap prices induces a rise in shipscrapping prices, while the remaining variables do not contribute to such increases. Specifically, an escalation in shipscrapping prices is associated with increased prices of 20-year-old secondhand vessels, newbuilding prices, and exchange rates. However, the other variables do not show a significant influence on short-term increases in shipscrapping prices.
