  • The goal of this research was to investigate the effect the computer game-based learning has on learning achievement in computer education for middle school students. To achieve this goal 74 middle schoolers were allocated into the experiment group(34 students) with the educational computer games class and the control group(34 students) with the traditional face-to-face class. After identifying the homogeneity of two groups through the pre-test, the experiment was carried out. As a result, the mean difference between the experiment group and the control group was statistically significant. That is, learning achievement of middle schoolers utilizing the computer games was higher than that of the face-to-face class. It is suggested that the game factors should be considered in designing the computer education.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the academic achievements, learning attitudes, and career compromising processes for successful undergraduate students in the College of Engineering. To achieve this goal, research was conducted to analyze whether there was a strong major-career connection among Engineering students of Seoul National University. Afterwards, differences in levels of academic achievement, learning attitude, and academic aspiration were analyzed between students who had achieved a major-career match and students who had not. As a result, it was found that the level of major-career connection was highly correlated to the level of academic achievement; furthermore, learning attitudes were strongly related to the level of motivation towards a high academic achievement, and influenced future learning attitudes as well. These findings suggest that further academic support, career guidance, and major switching policies are needed for undergraduate students in Colleges of Engineering.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and empirically evaluate a theoretical model that delineated the processes whereby parents' socioeconomic status affected students'academic achievement via parental support and students' ego-resilience. The proposed model was tested with the first and second wave of a cohort sample of the first grade middle school students from the Korean Children Youth Panel survey by using linear structural relations techniques. The results of analysis showed firstly that parents' socioeconomic status, parental support and students' ego-resilience directly affected the level of students'academic achievement with statistical significance. Secondly, parental support, the proxy of social capital of the family, was contingent upon the parents'socioeconomic status. Thirdly, in addition to its direct effect, parents'socioeconomic status gave indirect effect on students' academic performance through parental support and ego-resilience. Based upon these results implications for social work intervention were provided.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the mediating effects of parental academic expectations and adolescent's optimism in the influence of perceived parental attachment on learning flow. The subjects of this study were 184 middle and high school students in Seoul. The results of this study are as follows. First, academic expectation and optimism showed significant full mediation effects on the relationship between parent attachment and learning flow. Second, there was no statistically significant difference in the difference between the indirect effects of academic expectation and optimism by the bootstrapping method. Based on the results of this study, it was found that the healthy attachment relationship with the parents increases the parent's supportive expectancy, improves the optimism for the youth, and improves the learning commitment for effective learning. Finally, we discussed the role and expectations of parents and adolescents in promoting the learning commitment of adolescents.

Data were collected from 268 nursing students in the 3rd and 4th grades of two universities. As a result of the study, it was found that there was a significant positive correlation between critical thinking disposition, academic self-efficacy, and self-directed learning ability of nursing students. The factors affecting the self-directed learning ability of nursing students were critical thinking disposition, academic self-efficacy, major satisfaction, and personality disposition, which accounted for 68% of self-directed learning ability. Therefore, in order to improve self-directed learning ability, it will be improved if the critical thinking disposition can be improved through the curriculum, and academic self-efficacy and major satisfaction are increased by applying various teaching and learning methods and programs.

  • This study evaluates potential factors in various levels that affect students' intent to leave school. Those levels include individual, family, and school. After thorough review of literature on related subjects, the data from 「2021 Youth Survey on Human Right Conditions」 will be analyzed. Binary logistic regression analysis shows several results. First of all, respondents' age and sex strongly influence students' intents to leave school. Secondly, in terms of effect size, respondents' age is strongly related to the dependent variable in all models. Third, compared to those variables in individual and family levels, the effects of variables in school level are more significantly related to the intents to leave school. Finally, the significance of the effect of students' independent activities in school on the intent to leave school implies that students' voluntary and independent activities in school could decrease students' frustration in school and increase motivation to stay in school in certain ways.

  • This study identified the relationship between adolescents' academic helplessness and smartphone dependence and verified the parallel mediating effect of self-esteem and friendships. To this end, the fourth data of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS) conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute were used, and 2,244 were used for analysis after removing 346 adolescents who responded to the survey. For data analysis, the statistical package programs SPSS WIN 25.0 and Hayes (2013)'s PROCESS Macro V 3.5 were used, and the following results were derived. First, adolescents' academic helplessness had a positive (+)(+) effect on their dependence on smartphones. Second, self-esteem was found to mediate the relationship between adolescents' academic helplessness and smartphone dependence. Third, it was found that friend relationships mediate the relationship between adolescents' academic helplessness and smartphone dependence. Based on these results, practical and policy suggestions to reduce adolescents' dependence on smartphones and follow-up studies to overcome the limitations of research were proposed.
