  • Despite continuous efforts by healthcare institutions and professionals, incidents threatening patient safety continue to occur. Policies related to patient safety are being strengthened, and nursing students are recognized as key personnel in patient safety management. Identifying factors influencing patient safety management behavior can enhance competency in patient safety management and prevent and improve patient safety incidents. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to clarify the impact of nursing students' knowledge, attitudes, and performance confidence related to patient safety management on their patient safety management behavior. A descriptive survey study was conducted, and data collection targeted 138 fourth-year nursing students in K region from October 25th to October 28th, 2022. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 25.0 program. The research findings showed that knowledge, attitudes, and confidence regarding patient safety management were positively correlated with patient safety management behavior. Factors influencing patient safety management behavior were identified as patient safety management education experience (β=.22, p<.001) and confidence (β=.66, p<.001). Based on these results, it is suggested that educational programs aimed at improving patient safety management behavior among nursing students should focus on enhancing patient safety management education experience and confidence.

Subjects were 34 nursing students and 3rd grade. Experimental treatment and data collection was conducted from December 14 to 29, 2013. Skills for subcutaneous injection including simple blood glucose test and indwelling catheterization were evaluated before and after intervention. Knowledge, attitude and confidence were measured using structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed by the frequency, descriptive statistics and paired t-test using SPSS version 21. As a result, after reeducation, significant improvement was found in competence (p<.001), knowledge (p<.001) and confidence (p<.001) in subcutaneous injection and indwelling catheterization. Convergence-Based reeducation program was found effective to enhance the competence of core basic nursing skills before graduating nursing students. Therefore, it is necessary to continue to develop program and to evaluate the effects with further research.

  • It is known that Korean students performs very well in mathematics but show poor attitude toward mathematics. However, attitude itself is an important goal of education and it also promotes students learning. Therefore, it is important and urgent for us to find a way to improve students' attitude toward mathematics. In this article, we tried to examine characteristics of Korean students' attitude toward mathematics and identify student and school level factors affecting it. For this purpose, we analysed National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) data in 2007 when NAEA was conducted especially focused on mathematics. Main findings of this research are as follows. First, we found that attitude toward mathematics got lower as students advanced to higher grades. And among 3 sub-domains of attitude toward mathematics, interest and self-confidence were lower than perception of value of mathematics. Secondly, attitude toward mathematics was mainly affected by student background variables such as gender, achievement, participation in private tutoring, father's education level. And while school factors contributed relatively little to students' attitude toward mathematics, teacher's perception on value of school education was positively related with students' attitude in high schools and emphasis on assessment was negatively related with students' attitude in elementary schools.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine trends in Korean middle school students' attitudes toward science and the differences in boys' and girls' attitudes toward science as well as to analyze Korean middle school students' attitudes toward science compared to those in Singapore, Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong, and Japan. In order to achieve these purposes, we analyzed students' survey data on self-confidence in science, interests in science, external motivation for science, and career preference for science collected from TIMSS 1995, TIMSS 1999, and TIMSS 2003. Korean students' interests in science and external motivation for science reduced in TIMSS 1999 and increased again in TIMSS 2003. The amount of change was greater in interests in science. On the other hand, self-confidence in science and career preference for science consistently declined from TIMSS 1995 to TIMSS 2003. Self-confidence in science among boys and girls was similar in TIMSS 1995 and 1999. But self-confidence of girls in science declined rapidly from TIMSS 1999 to 2003, while self-confidence of boys in science remained almost the same. Trends of interests in science were similar between boys and girls; they declined in TIMSS 1999 and increased again in TIMSS 2003. External motivation for science of both boys and girls increased, and the increase among girls was greater. The percentage of boys who wanted to have a job using science consistently declined from TIMSS 1999 to TIMSS 2003, while the percentage of girls declined in TIMSS 1999 and increased in TIMSS 2003 again. The results from an international comparison with other Asian countries having similar cultures showed that Korean students' self-confidence in science, career preference for science of middle school students was the lowest.
