  • In this paper, the format of the Korean 2011 & the Japan 2008 elementary school mathematics curriculum are compared especially centered on elements, areas, objectives, and lesson time numbers. Through this comparison, suggestions can be obtained as follows. First, grade-group system which does not meet the actual elementary mathematics education needs to be reconsidered. Second, the area name 'number and operation' needs to be reduced into the area name 'number and calculation'. Third, using the area name 'pattern' needs to be reconsidered. Fourth, using the area name 'probability' needs to be reconsidered. If 'possibility' which some event occurs is seen as ratio, it can be contained area 'quantity relationship'. Fifth, containing the nature of mathematics into the school mathematics objectives needs to be reconsidered. Sixth, it is necessary to enhance the phase of mathematics in elementary education.

  • Considering precedent studies in which research subjects are mainly confined to secondary school students or higher grade students of elementary schools, we can notice that there has been implicit agreement that instruction of mathematical modeling is quite difficult to lower grade students of elementary schools. Compared to this tendency, this study aims to examine the possibility of instruction of mathematical modeling for all of school ages, and more specifically, the applicability of mathematical modeling tasks to lower graders. To do this, we developed a mathematical modeling task proper to cognitive characteristics of lower graders and applied this task to the second graders. Based on the research results by lesson observation and the teacher's reflection, some didactical suggestions were induced for teaching the lower grade elementary school students mathematical modeling.

  • This study examined how elementary teachers perceive and use "problem-posing" as a way to improve students' problem-solving skills in their mathematics classrooms. In the study, a total of 193 teachers in metropolitan areas were surveyed and a subset of 4 teachers were selected for depth-interviews. Results of the study included that teachers did not have a clear understanding of the study included that teachers did not have a clear understanding of the intended meaning of "problem-posing" although many of them have heard about the idea itself. Therefore, "problem-posing" was not fully utilized in their mathematics instructional and assessment. It is suggested that there is a need to develop instructional materials and related professional development of teachers for better instruction of problem-posing in the mathematics classroom.

  • Even though the variety of expressions are dealt with in Korean elementary mathematics, the systematization of the subject matter of expressions is still insufficient. This is basically due to the failure of revealing clearly the identity of expressions dealt with in elementary mathematics. In this paper, as a groundwork to improve this situation, after the classification of signs as elements constituting expressions, in a position to consider elementary mathematics using transitional signs such as ${\square}$, ${\triangle}$, etc and words or phrases in expressions, expressions were defined and classified based on that classification of signs. It can be presented as the conclusion that the following four judgements which helps to promote the systematization of the subject matter of expressions are possible through this definition and classifications. First, by clarifying the identity of the expressions, any mathematical clauses or sentences can be determined whether those are expressions or not. Second, Forms of expressions can be identified. Third, the subject matter of expressions can be identified systematically. Fourth, the hierarchy of the subject matter of expressions can be identified.

  • In this paper we review an axiomatic definition of the area of plane figures with area axioms, discuss what the area axioms mean, and analyze the contents about the area of plane figures in elementary school mathematics from the view point of area axioms. So we evaluate which aspects of the concept of area are emphasized or deemphasized in the current elementary school mathematics textbook.

  • In this study, connections between the NURI curriculum for 5 years old children and the contents of teacher's manual books according to it and the contents of elementary 1st grade mathematics curriculum and textbooks was analyzed to find the implications that can help to link the two curricula in the development of kindergarten and elementary school mathematics curriculum. The five following implications could be obtained from the analysis. First, it is necessary to connect the contents of the NURI curriculum for 5 years old children which were completed in that curriculum like 'spatial relation'in geometric figure domain and 'data collection'in probability and statistics domain to the contents of the 1st grade curriculum. Second, in the case of the contents not connected between the NURI curriculum for 5 years old children and the contents of elementary 1st grade mathematics curriculum but connected between the NURI curriculum for 5 years old children and the contents of elementary 2nd ~6th grade mathematics curriculum, it is necessary to re-adjust the hierarchy based on one of the curricula. Third, it is necessary to check whether $\ll$K-teacher's manual book$\gg$ obey the NURI curriculum for 5 years old children or not. Fourth, it is necessary to review the related elements of the NURI curriculum for 5 years old children and elementary 2nd ~6th grade mathematics curriculum in [activity] in $\ll$K-teacher's manual book$\gg$. Fifth, it is necessary to handle the mathematics contents explicitly and systematically in [activity] in $\ll$K-teacher's manual book$\gg$.
