  • Constructive learning is an active process of meaning construction and students decide their individual learning objectives according to their own interest concern and ability. The purpose of this study is to develop a teaching-learning model and classroom materials from constructivist perspectives and to apply them to an elementary school classroom in Seoul for one month. In this study, it was reorganized the contents of unit of 'beds and fossils' based on the discussion between students and teacher during the second semester of 4th grade class. The teaching-learning model consists of five steps: 1) introduction; 2) exercise; 3) presentation; 4) consensus; and 5) development. The implementation results were summarized.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the interactions of ego-resilience and social supports in the school adjustment in children. The subjects of this study were 479 children drawn from the fourth and sixth grades of three elementary schools in Cheongju city. The pilot study was done to examine the applicability of survey instruments. Data was analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach's t-test, ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc test, correlation, and hierarchial analysis using the SPSSWIN program. The results of this research were as follows: First, the results showed that the effects of the interaction of ego-resilience and social supports on school adjustment were different according to the children's gender and age. Second, teacher supports had influence on school life satisfaction, interest in the subject, attitude in class, and observance of school rules according to the children's gender and age. Finally, overall, the influence of school life satisfaction, interest in subjects, attitude in class, and observance of school rules was greater for girls than boys.

  • Research has shown that attitudes of young people toward forest and the relationship between the attitudes and aggression in the forest. Results from factor analysis on forest attitude scale of young people showed two factors; enjoying the forest, importance and usefulness of forest. Based on the comparison of two means(factors) young people recognized that forest was important and had to be protected but, little perceived as interesting. Also this study showed that the forest attitude was negatively correlated with aggression, especially in physical and verbal aggressive behavior.

  • Logistic models with a random intercept are useful to analyze longitudinal binary data. Traditionally, the random intercept of the logistic model is assumed to be parametric (such as normal distribution) and is also assumed to be independent to variables. Such assumptions are very strong and restricted for application to real data. Recently, Garcia and Ma (2015) derived semiparametric efficient estimators for logistic model with a random intercept without these assumptions. Their estimator shows the consistency where we do not assume any parametric form for the random intercept. In addition, the method is computationally simple. In this paper, we apply this method to analyze toenail infection data. We compare the semiparametric estimator with maximum likelihood estimator, penalized quasi-likelihood estimator and hierarchical generalized linear estimator.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of home related variables like socio-demographic variables, parent-child communication, and concern for children's education on children's school adjustment. The data was collected from 287 elementary school children living in Gyunggido. Measurement scales included the children's school adjustment inventory, the questionnaire of the socio-demographic variables, the parent-child communication index, and the parent's concern about children's education index. Results showed that children's school adjustment was significantly effected with regard to: father's age, father's education, mother's education, income, and mother's job. Correlation analysis indicated that parent-child open communication was positively correlated to children's school adjustment; that is the relationships with teachers and with friends, study at school, and rule of school. As well, parent-child problematic communication was negatively correlated to all of the school adjustment variables. Parent's concern about children's education indicated positive correlations with all of the school adjustment variables. It was also found that: parent's concern about children's education, parent-child open communication, parent-child problematic communication, mother's education, and income were significant predictors of the children's school adjustment.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate completely the relationship between obesity and Qui Xue Shui diagnostic procedure in primary and middle school students. Methods : The study participants were the 1, 2nd grade students of middle school and 5, 6th grade students of primary school in Kang dong Gu of Seoul (1134 Students). The participants were measured for their height and weight etc, and they were also surveyed by questionnaire. We diagnosed the students as when they scored 10 points or behind on Qui Xue Shui(QXS) question problems from Japan education academy. Results and Conclusions : The mean QXS score in the obese group was significantly higher than that of the normal body weight group and the obeser they are, the higher QXS score is. The Qi xu, Qi yu, Xue xu, Shui chi score of the QXS questions the obese group was higher than the normal group. The total QXS score was significantly higher in the obese group. It is shown that the total score of using the Qui Xue Shui diagnostic procedure is mainly dependent on obesity.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the teacher's and parent's recognition of kindergarten and elementary school about the public education in early childhood education. Especially they included the recognition of concept and necessity, preconsideration, and the direction of future policy of early childhood education to public one. The subjects were 182 teachers and 190 parents in kindergarten and elementary school in Korea. The data was analyzed by Frequency, Percentage, and Chi-Square. The main results were as follows; 1. Teachers and parents defined the concept of public education of the early childhood education as a system which puts a direction in operation and support the finances of national and local government for public and private kindergarten. In addition, teachers and parents thought that the public education was necessary because early childhood was important in developmental aspects. 2. Teachers and parents insisted that the expansion of understanding about public education should be preconsidered and various early childhood programs should be developed. 3. Teachers and parents also agreed that the public education policy should be based on the model and should be progressed sequentially. But they distrusted the current policy.

  • In the current study, we measured the hands and other representative body items of 223 elementary school girls using Martin Anthropometer and a digital camera so that we would be able to provide information on both size and shape of hands for design of hand-related products. As time goes on, hands get bigger, yet they get thinner at the same time. The data implies that the frame of hands grows, but the skin fat lessens, which could be a determinant factor in the size system of hand-related products. According to the results of a factor analysis on 26 hand items, 5 factors including hand laterality and linearity, fingertip shape, finger breadth, and hand depth, have been extracted. Pearson's correlation showed that most of hand-related factors were strongly associated with other body items. Finger breadth and hand depth, however, were found less related to other body items. The ANOVA test used in testing the difference of hand factors showed, in most items, a difference by ages, but there was no significant differences in fingertip breadth, the third factor, Interestingly, in hand depth, the fifth factor, lower grade girls' hands were thicker than higher grade girls'. This research suggests that the size system of uniformly increasing the size of all hand parts by age groups should be reconsidered and leaves much for improvement.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of parenting behavior and parent-child communication on internet use among school-aged children. The subjects were 215 children whose grade are 3rd and 5th selected from an elementary school in Incheon. The statistics used for this data were t-test, one-way ANOVA(Duncan's test), and stepwise regression. The findings from the present study suggested that academic achievement and birth order turned out to be significant variables on children's internet use, except for sex and grade. Results of the stepwise regression analyses that the etiologic model of this study was more proper, and parenting behavior is more effective variable than parent-child communication in predicting internet use among school-aged children. Implications based on this study are as follows; In order to decrease the degree of school-aged children's internet use, parents should do less permissive parenting behavior and problematic communication with their children.

  • This paper reports on a study that examined the longitudinal and concurrent effects of the home literacy environment(HLE) on first grade language performance, and the effect of language performance on school adjustment. Study subjects were 469 first graders of 6 elementary schools. The parents' and teacher's reports were used to investigate the subjects' language performance, school adjustment, and the HLE before and after the elementary school entry. Findings from the study show that there is an association between the HLE during the preschool period and the HLE in first grade, and the HLE in first grade positively affects children's language performance. Also the children's language performance had a positive influence on their school adjustment. Therefore, it can be concluded that the HLE during the preschool period is a significant feature that lingers to affect children's language performance and school adjustment.
