  • The purpose of this study was to verify relative effects of emotion and empathy on altruistic behavior. A survey including psychological well-being, depression, empathic concern, and perspective taking was conducted on 329 undergraduates. Results revealed that altruism was positively correlated with psychological well-being, empathy concern, and perspective taking but negatively correlated with depression. Test for relative effects of positive and negative emotional states on altruism revealed that psychological well-being, but not depression, significantly predicted altruism. Test for relative effects of emotional and cognitive empathy factors on altruism showed that empathic concern, but not perspective taking, significantly predicted altruism. Test for relative effects of all four factors on altruism revealed that the empathic concern was the strongest factor affecting altruism, followed by psychological well-being, while the remaining two factors did not have an effect on altruism. Implications and limitations of this study are also discussed in this study.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of moral elevation and self control on the relationship between moral identity, character strengths, family strengths, and altruistic behavior in the times of convergence. The collected data were analyzed by SEM. The results of this study were as follows: First, moral self has indirect effect on altruistic behavior through moral elevation and self control in turn, and character strengths, have indirect effect on altruistic behavior through moral elevation and self control and moral elevation, self control in turn, and family strengths have indirect effect on altruistic behavior through self control. Second, it was found that there was a significant gender difference in the structural weights of character strengths and moral elevation.

  • This study investigated the relationship between emotional contagion and altruistic behaviors and also examined the moderating effect of self-construals(independent and interdependent self) in this relationship. It was hypothesized that the emotional expression of people in need would be caught by others through automatic mimicry, that emotional information would be internalized through the facial-feedback process and that the transferred emotion would eventually result in a motive to call for altruistic behaviors. In Study 1, participants watched a video clip about a disabled student reporting difficulties in school life but showing facial expression opposite to the contents of message to separate emotional contagion and empathy. Participants' decision to participate in voluntary works for the disabled student was measured. As a result, it was found that the more participants experienced emotional contagion, the more they participated in altruistic behaviors. Study 2 measured the vulnerability to emotional contagion, actual experiences of altruistic behaviors, and self-construals. The results of hierarchical regression showed that interdependent self moderated the influence of emotional contagion on altruistic behaviors whereas independent self moderated the relationship in an opposite direction. The implications of emotion and altruistic behaviors in human evolution process are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of moral elevation on the relationship between character strengths(humanity), self-control and altruistic behavior in the times of convergence. 647 college students in Cheongju were sampled. Four measurement instruments were employed; a Character Strengths(Humanity) Scale, Self-Control Scale, Moral Elevation Scale, and Altruistic Behavior Scale. The Collected data were analyzed with SPSS program and Structural Equation Modeling(SEM). Fitness of the final model were CFI=.937, TLI=.917, RMSEA=.077. The results of this study were as follows: First, there were significant positive correlations among character strengths(humanity), self-control, and altruistic behavior. Second, according to the structural equation modeling, the results showed that moral elevation had a mediating effect in relationship between college student's character strengths(humanity), self-control and altruistic behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an altruistic behavior enhancement program for middle school students based on the Maumgram. To do this, we conducted basic research on the altruistic behavior program by collecting and analyzing related literature. The contents of the survey are related to the factors necessary for program analysis and content analysis. It has been validated twice in total by eight experts on the composition and content of the program. The program design consisted of three stages of observation, conversion, and relationship orientation, and selected contents suitable for altruistic programs and conducted them once a week for middle school students, self-inspection, understanding, empathy and communication. However, further study is needed to verify the effect of applying the program in the future. This study will provide basic data on the character education of middle school students by promoting the tendency of altruistic behavior through adjusting training of selfishness.

  • This study was conducted to determine the impacts of perceived stress and empathy ability on altruistic behavior of freshman nursing students. Data were collected from 160 freshman nursing students between 24 November and 9 December 2016. A total of 154 questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and Stepwise multiple regression. The results showed that perceived stress had significant negative correlations with altruistic behavior (r=-0.178, p=0.028) as did positive perception, a subfactor of perceived stress (r=-0.347, p<0.001). However, empathy ability was significantly positively correlated with altruistic behavior (r=0.607, p<0.001). The factors influencing altruistic behavior included emotional empathy, cognitive empathy and positive perception, with emotional empathy being the most influential factor (${\beta}=0.320$), followed by cognitive empathy (${\beta}=0.312$), which together had an explanatory power of 41.6%. Moreover, there was a mediating effect of empathy ability in the relationship between positive perception and altruistic behavior. Overall, the results of this study indicate that the management of curricula for nursing college students should search for ways to reduce their perceived stress as well as increase their empathy ability in order to improve their altruistic behavior.

The results of study can be summarized as follows. First, it was shown that intrinsic satisfaction, sub-factor of intrinsic extrinsic job satisfaction, had a positive (+) effect on altruism. Second, it was shown that intrinsic satisfaction had a positive (+) effect on conscientiousness. Third, it was shown that intrinsic satisfaction had a positive (+) effect on participation. Fourth, it was shown that extrinsic satisfaction didn't have significant effect on altruism. Fifth, it was shown that extrinsic satisfaction didn't have significant effect on conscientiousness. Sixth, it was shown that extrinsic satisfaction didn't have significant effect on participation. Seventh, it was shown that skill variety had a moderation effect on the relationship which intrinsic satisfaction had with altruism and participation. Eighth, it was shown that task identify had a moderation effect on the relationship which intrinsic satisfaction had with altruism and participation. • This study was conducted to identify the factors that affect the empathy ability of dental hygiene students and to provide them with basic data to explore ways to improve empathy ability. The participants in the study were 198. Data analysis was carried out T-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis by using SPSS version 19.0. The order of factors that affect the empathy ability from the most to the least was empathic ability(=.315) and emotional clarity(=.210), altruistic behavior(=.206). Based on the results of this research, we presented basic data useful for developing programmes for dental hygiene student's empathy, and proposed the necessity of follow-up research.

  • This study investigated the effects of a brief Loving-Kindness and Compassion Meditation(20 minutes) on compassionate love and altruism of undergraduate students. Among the 187 students who were completed the KIIP-SC, 35 of high scored students in Interpersonal Problem Scale were randomly assigned to one of two different groups: Loving-Kindness and Compassion Meditation group(LCM, n=19) and Imagery Trainning group(IT, n=16). During the 20 minutes of practice, LCM group was asked to practice loving-kindness and compassion meditation and IT group was asked to investigate personal characteristics of the imagined people who were same as LCM. Compassionate love, four immeasurebles, two kind of altruistic behaviors, and mood states were measured pre- and post-treatment. LCM group showed significantly higher incremental scores for compassionate love, donation for strange person, and helping behaviors for friends, for close person, and for stranger than IT group. Negative and positive mood states were improved for each of the groups, but there was no significant differences between groups. The results suggested that the comparatively short practice of loving-kindness and compassion meditation could increase altruistic attitudes and intentions toward other persons. And, these effects could not be attributed to mood effects. Limitations of this study and the directions of further research were discussed.
