In this note we examined some terms, parallel lines and angles in elementary school mathematics and middle school mathematics respectively. Since some terms are represented early in elementary school mathematics and not repeated after, some students are not easy to apply the terms to their lesson. Also, since the relation between parallel lines and angles are treated intuitively in 7-th grade, applying the relation for a proof in 8-th grade would be meaningless. For the variety of mathematics education, it is desirable that the relation between parallel lines and angles are treated as postulate. Also, for out standing students, it is desirable that we use deductive reasoning to prove the relation between parallel lines and angles as a theorem. In particular, the treatments of vertical angles and the relation between parallel lines and angles in 7-th grade text books must be reconsidered. Proof is very important in mathematics, and the deductive reasoning is necessary for proof. It would be efficient if some properties such as congruence of vertical angles and the relation between parallel lines and angles are dealt in 8-th grade for proof.
This study analyzes on the reasoning in the process of justification and mathematical problem solving in our primary mathematics textbooks. In our analyses, we found that the inductive reasoning based on the paradima-tic example whose justification is founnded en a local deductive reasoning is the most important characteristics in our textbooks. We also found that some propositions on the properties of various quadrangles impose a deductive reasoning on primary students, which is very difficult to them. The inductive reasoning based on enumeration is used in a few cases, and analogies based on the similarity between the mathematical structures and the concrete materials are frequntly found. The exposition based en a paradigmatic example, which is the most important characteristics, have a problematic aspect that the level of reasoning is relatively low In Miyazaki's or Semadeni's respects. And some propositions on quadrangles is very difficult in Piagetian respects. As a result of our study, we propose that the level of reasoning in primary mathematics is leveled up by degrees, and the increasing levels are following: empirical justification on a paradigmatic example, construction of conjecture based on the example, examination on the various examples of the conjecture's validity, construction of schema on the generality, basic experiences for the relation of implication.
Middle school mathematics treats axiom as mere fact verified by experiment or observation and doesn't mention it axiom. But axiom is very important to understand the difference between empirical verification and mathematical proof, intuitive geometry and deductive geometry, proof and nonproof. This study analysed textbooks and surveyed gifted students' conception of axiom. The results showed the problem and limitation of middle school mathematics on the treatment of axiom and proof.
This study provides middle school students with an opportunity to construct elementary functions with dynamic geometry based on the proportion between lengths of triangle to activate students' intuition in handling elementary algebraic functions and their geometric properties. In addition, this study emphasizes the process of justification about the choice of students' construction method to improve students' deductive reasoning ability. As a result of the pilot lesson study, this paper shows the characteristics of the students' construction process of elementary functions and the roles the teacher plays in the process.
In the present study, we analyze the four participating 9th grade students' mathematical reasoning processes in their dragging activities while solving open-ended geometry problems in terms of abduction, induction and deduction. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the students utilized 'abduction' to adopt their hypotheses, 'induction' to generalize them by examining various cases and 'deduction' to provide warrants for the hypotheses. Secondly, in the abduction process, 'wandering dragging' and 'guided dragging' seemed to help the students formulate their hypotheses, and in the induction process, 'dragging test' was mainly used to confirm the hypotheses. Despite of the emerging mathematical reasoning via their dragging activities, several difficulties were identified in their solving processes such as misunderstanding shapes as fixed figures, not easily recognizing the concept of dependency or path, not smoothly proceeding from probabilistic reasoning to deduction, and trapping into circular logic.
Researchers have suggested that students should be experienced in progress of geometric thinking set out in naive and intuitive level and deduced throughout gradual formalization rather than completed mathematics are conveyed to students for students' understanding. This study examined naive and intuitive thinking of students by investigating students' geometric problem solving without diagrams. The students showed these naive thinking: lack of recognition of relation between problem and conditions, use of intuitive judgement depending on diagrams, lacking in understanding of role of specific case, and use of unjustified assumption. This study suggests implication for instruction in geometry.
In this paper, we developed teaching learning models using a numeral operation for the mathematical gifted focused on the design of a circle using GSP and investigated effects of this models. This model gave gifted-students to be able to produce creative outputs with mathematical principles and practicality and beauty of mathematics. We found following facts. Firstly, a developed teaching-learning model improves a mathematical gifted student's mathematical creativity as analytic thinking and deductive inference. Secondly, a circular design using GSP helps gifted students to understand the abstract rules because mathematical patterns was represented visually by a circular design. Lastly, a circular design using a numeral operation is helpful to gifted students revealing to creativity and beauty of mathematics.
This paper analysed the mathematical paradoxes which would be based in the probability and statistics. Teachers need to endeavor various data in order to lead student's interest. This paper says mathematical paradoxes in mathematics education makes student have interest and concern when they study mathematics. So, teachers will recognize the need and efficiency of class for using mathematical Paradoxes, students will be promoted to study mathematics by having interest and concern. These study can show the value of paradoxes in the concept of probability and statistics, and illuminate the concept being taught in classroom. Consequently, mathematical paradoxes in mathematics education can be used efficient studying tool.
In this paper, we investigated the mathematical output of a gifted student's independent study. We chose one student who was taking a mentorship course in mathematics at the Gifted Education Center in Chonnam National University, and analyzed the characters of the result which a student showed through the output of independent study and studied the psychological change of a student while he was making a presentation of the results of his study. We found following facts. First, a mentor-independent study improves a mathematical gifted student's inductive thinking and ability to generalize and apply to other cases. Second, presenting a mathematical gifted student's output for mentor-independent study improves his ability of mathematical communication in the abilities of creative problem solving. Finally, there is an increased change in his perception and self-efficacy of mathematics after the presentation.
