The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of the real number e and to investigate the understanding of pre-service teachers about the real number e. 28 pre-service teachers were asked to take a test based on the various ideas of the real number e and 8 pre-service teachers were interviewed. The results of this study are as follows. First, a large number of pre-service teachers couldn't recognize relation between the formal definition and the representations of the real number e. Secondly, pre-service teachers judged appropriately for the irrationality and the construction impossibility of the real number e, but they couldn't provide reasonable evidence. Lastly, pre-service teachers understood the continuous compounding context and exponential function context of the real number e, but they had a difficulty in understanding the geometric context and natural logarithm context of the real number e.

The purpose of this study was to analyse students' achievement of 'Earth Science' in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat(TIMSS-R), which was performed in 1999 with 38 nations participating. Korean 8th grade students' achievement of 'Earth Science' was compared with those of other countries and other content areas in science. Average percent correct of items in each subcategory was also analysed. Most of the 'Earth Science' topics were included in the intended curricula of Korea; they were taught to most of the students in science classes. Korean students ' average scale score of 'Earth Science' was significantly higher than the international average, but in comparison with other science content areas, achievement of 'Earth Science' was relatively low. The teachers' confidence in teaching earth science was lower than their confidence in teaching other science areas. The paper presents the results of item analysis and their implications for science education.

It is necessary to understand the characteristics of each type of division problems in other to help students develop a rich understanding when they learn each type of division problems. This study focuses on a specific type of division problems; a quotitive division as finding a scale factor in enlargement context. First, this study investigated via survey how 4th-6th graders and preservice and inservice elementary teachers solved a quotitive division relating to scaling problem. And semi-structured interviews with preservice and inservice elementary teachers were conducted to explore what knowledge they brought when they tried to solve enlargement quotitive division problems. Most of participants solved the given quotitive division problem in the same way. Only a few preservice and inservice teachers interpreted it as a proportion problem and solved in a different way. From the interviews, it was found that different conceptions of context and decontextualization, and different conceptions of times (as repeated addition or as a multiplicative operator) were connected to different solutions. Finally, three issues relating to teaching enlargement quotitive division were discussed; visual representation of two solutions, conceptions connected each solution, and integrating quotitive division and proportion in math textbooks.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the difficulties of teachers and students on the unit about 'measuring weight.' In this research, we have acquired data about teachers through survey, interview, and self-reflection journals, at the same time we have collected information on the students through survey, assessment test, and interview. We have extracted the difficulties from analysis with constant comparison method. In addition, we have analysed the curriculum of science and mathematics to know the leaning sequence. The analysis had been checked up by experts in science education. The result of the study is as follows: The difficulties of teachers are from the lack of teachers' descriptive knowledge, disorder of conceptual hierarchy in the curriculum, poor experimental instruments, and low psychomotor skill of students. The difficulties of students are from common misconceptions, opaque concepts, lack of manipulation skill, insufficiency of mathematical ability, difficulty of application of principles to the real situation, and lack of problem-solving ability. In addition, teachers have recognized that students face more difficulties in experiment class, while students think that they face more difficulties in conceptual understanding class.

Green networking has become a issue to reduce energy wastes and CO2 emission by adding energy managing mechanism to wired data networks. Energy consumption of the overall wired data networks is driven by access networks, expect for end devices. However, on a global scale, it is more difficult to manage centrally energy, measure and model the real energy use and energy savings potential of the access networks. This paper presented the multiple linear regression model to predict energy consumption of wired access networks using supervised learning of machine learning with data collected by existing investigated materials, actual measured values and results of many models. In addition, this work optimized the performance of it by various experiments and predict energy consumption of wired access networks. The performance evaluation of the regression model was achieved by well-knowned evaluation metrics.

With the prolonged COVID-19, the existing academic gap is widening. The purpose of this study is to provide homeroom teachers with a visual confirmation of the academic achievement gap in grades and classrooms through academic achievement analysis, and to use this to help them design lessons and explore ways to improve the academic achievement gap. The data of students' Korean and math diagnostic evaluation scores at the beginning of the school year were visualized as clusters using the K-means algorithm, and as a result, it was confirmed that a meaningful clusters were formed. In addition, through the results of the teacher interview, it was confirmed that this system was meaningful in improving the academic achievement gap, such as checking the learning level and academic achievement of students, and designing classes such as individual supplementary instruction and level-specific learning. This means that this academic achievement data analysis system helps to improve the academic gap. This study provides practical help to homeroom teachers in exploring ways to improve the academic gap in grades and classes, and is expected to ultimately contribute to improving the academic gap.

The COVID-19 outbreak, which took longer than expected, caused considerable damage to students' basic academic ability in mathematics. In this paper, a multiplication table practice application that can help students improve their basic multiplication arithmetic skills has been developed based on a cloud-service. The performance of the application was improved by integrating the Flutter framework, Google Cloud, and Google Sheets. As a result of applying this application to 72 6th graders in elementary schools located in K Metropolitan City, for one week. students' spending time required for solving multiplication table problems was reduced by more than 28% compared to the initial period, while students' learning data was able to be accurately collected without errors. It is hoped that the development case conducted through the Flutter framework in this study can lead to the development of other educational learning applications.
This study clarified the big ideas related to teaching addition and subtraction of fractions with different denominators based on quantitative reasoning with unit and recursive partitioning. An analysis of this study urged us to re-consider the content related to the addition and subtraction of fraction. As such, this study analyzed textbooks and teachers' manuals developed from the fourth national mathematics curriculum to the most recent 2009 curriculum. In addition and subtraction of fractions with different denominators, it must be emphasized the followings: three-levels unit structure, fixed whole unit, necessity of common measure and recursive partitioning. An analysis of this study showed that textbooks and teachers' manuals dealt with the fact of maintaining a fixed whole unit only as being implicit. The textbooks described the reason why we need to create a common denominator in connection with the addition of similar fractions. The textbooks displayed a common denominator numerically rather than using a recursive partitioning method. Given this, it is difficult for students to connect the models and algorithms. Building on these results, this study is expected to suggest specific implications which may be taken into account in developing new instructional materials in process.

For teaching division-with-remainder(DWR) problems, it is necessary to know students' strategies and errors about DWR problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze students' strategies and errors of DWR problems and to make some meaningful suggestions for teaching various methods of solving DWR problems. We constructed a test which consists of fifteen DWR problems to investigate students' solving strategies and errors. These problems include mathematical as well as syntactic structures. To apply this test, we selected 177 students from eight elementary schools in various districts of Seoul. The results were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The sixth graders' strategies can be classified as follows : Single strategies, Multi strategies and Assistant strategies. They used Division(D) strategy, Multiplication(M) strategy, and Additive Approach(A) strategy as sub-strategies. We noticed that frequently used strategies do not coincide with strategies for their success. While students in middle group used Assistant strategies frequently, students in higher group used Single strategies frequently. The sixth graders' errors can be classified as follows : Formula error(F error), Calculation error(C error), Calculation Product error(P error) and Interpretation error(I error). In this study, there were 4 elements for syntaxes in problems : large number, location of divisor and dividend, divisor size, vocabularies. When students in lower group were solving the problems, F errors appeared most frequently. However, in case of higher group, I errors appeared most frequently. Based on these results, we made some didactical suggestions.

This study aims to investigate an approach to teach percentages in elementary mathematics class by analyzing calculating strategies with percentage the students use to solve the percentage tasks and their percentages of correct answers, as well as types of errors with percentages the students make. For this research 182 sixth graders were examined. The instrument test consists of various task types in reference to the previous study; the percentages tasks are divided into algebraic-geometric, part whole-comparison-change and find part-find whole-find percentage tasks. According to the analysis of this study, percentages of correct answers of students with percentage tasks were lower than we expected, approximately 50%. Comparing the percentages of correct answers according to the task types, the part-whole tasks are higher than the comparison and change tasks, the geometric tasks are approximately equal to the algebraic tasks, and the find percentage tasks are higher than the find whole and find part tasks. As to the strategies that students employed, the percentage of using the formal strategy is not much higher than that of using the informal strategy, even after learning the formal strategy. As an insightful approach for teaching percentages, based on the study results, it is suggested to reinforce the meaning of percentage, include various types of the comparison and change tasks, emphasize the informal strategy explicitly using models prior to the formal strategy, and understand the relations among part, whole and percentage throughly in various percentage situations before calculating.
