  • In the history of elementary school mathematics education in Korea, the period led by the Government-General of Joseon during the Japanese colonial period cannot be omitted. As a way to grasp the real state of elementary school mathematics education at that time, there is a method of analyzing elementary school mathematics textbooks published by the Government-General of Joseon. However, the actual state of the publication of them was not sufficiently known. For this reason, this study surveys the actual state of the publication of those textbooks. To this end, real information on textbooks owned currently by various institutions and information on the publication of those textbooks in the official gazette and documents of the Government-General of Joseon were checked and organized.

  • In recent papers (Pak et al., Pak and Kim), it was suggested to positively use the history of mathematics for the education of mathematics and discussed the determining problem of the order of instruction in mathematics. There are three kinds of order of instruction - historical order, theoretical organization, lecturing organization. Lecturing organization order is a combination of historical order and theoretical organization order. It basically depends on his or her own value of education of each teacher. The present paper considers a concrete problem determining the order of instruction for the concept of angle. Since the concept of angle is defined in relation to figures, we have to solve the determining problem of the order of instruction for the concept of figure. In order to do this, we first investigate a historical order of the concept of figure by reviewing it in the history of mathematics. And then we introduce a theoretical organization order of the concept of figure. From these basic data we establish a lecturing organization order of the concept of figure from the viewpoint of problem-solving. According to this order we finally develop the concept of angle and a related global property which leads to the so-called Gauss-Bonnet theorem.

  • This article dealt with two approaches, algebraic and geometric approaches in terms of Pythagoreans theorem. As mathematics evolves, many theorems had been developed beginning with geometric approaches. However, the algebraic techniques that survive these days are so powerful and generalized in school curriculum. So, if students have more chances to see mathematical properties in geometrical ways, they can experience how beautiful and meaningful they are through the process of the advent of them. Also, it was to try to develop an insight into their applications to other problems.

  • Mathematics is a kind of language, and even a tool of cognition for human beings. Mathematics has been used to communicate and to develop the civilizations through the history. So mathematics is one of the most important subjects for human to teach and learn. Especially, developed countries believe that mathematics will play very important roles in the developments of future industries and so future society. In this article, we clarify that combinatorics which is mainly represented by counting is an important ingredient of future mathematics education. To do so, we investigate the characteristics of combinatorics from the educational and cognitive perspectives.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the elementary mathematics textbooks as a thematic approach, to suggest meaningful directions to future textbook development and curriculum development. For this study, we suggested mathematics textbooks of the three-themes, 'Healthy Life', 'Sustainable Life', 'Living-together Life', as multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, and extra-disciplinary types. With the problems that employed thematic approaches, the post-achievement scores of experimental groups who used 'Healthy Life' and 'Sustainable Life' textbooks were meaningfully higher than those of control groups. However, the post-achievement scores of experimental groups who used 'Living-together Life' textbook were not meaningfully higher than those of control groups. The attitudes towards mathematics of all three experimental groups were meaningfully higher than those of control groups. After applications of elementary mathematics textbooks as a thematic approach, we need to develop related materials, to consider various grades, levels, regions for developing better mathematics textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the tasks developed through task development activities with emphasis on mathematical connectivity, and to provide implications for teacher education to enhance teacher's competence. For this purpose, I analyzed the task developed by 52 pre-teachers through the activities. As a result, they combined mathematics with 'other subjects', 'mathematics', 'phenomenon', 'technology' and 'real life'. And they also made various internal connections of 'Different representation', 'Part-whole relationship', 'Implication', 'Procedure', and 'Instruction-oriented connection'. From the point of view of teacher knowledge, the study revealed that CCK and SCK were positive in terms of 'logical' and 'expression', and KCT as 'strategic' was meaningful but disappointing in diversity; however in terms of 'level', the KCS was limited due to tasks that did not meet the level of students. As such, this analysis reveals that teachers continue to struggle with understanding students' level, but exhibit little difficulty with 'logic', 'expression' and 'strategy. This being the case, teacher education needs to place additional emphasis in understanding students' levels and planning corresponding activities.

  • This article summarizes the historical changes of the secondary school geometry to give insights into the new direction of geometry education for the 21th century. Geometry has been considered as an essential subject in high school since mid-nineteen century in accordance with the social changes. Since the development of computer softwares such as CAD effects on the role of geometry in work and professional societies, the knowledge and skills the contemporary world require to school geometry have being changed. More focus on applications and modeling aspects, expansion of reasoning and problem solving, emphasis on design-related elements are features of the school geometry for the new century.

  • Recently, dissection puzzles such as pentominoes have been used in mathematics education. But they are not actively applicable as a tool of problem solving or introducing mathematical concepts since researches about the historical background and developments of mathematical applications of such puzzles have not been effectively accomplished. In this article, in order to use pentominoes in mathematical teaming effectively, we first investigate geometric problems related to dissection puzzles and the historic background of development of pentominoes. And then we collect and classify data related to pentomino activities which can be applicable to mathematics classes based on the 7th elementary school national curriculum. Finally, we suggest several basic materials and directions to develop more systematic learning materials about pentominoes.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the perceptions of creativity in mathematics of preservice elementary school teachers. Creativity in Mathematics is one of the most important components in mathematics teaching and learning, which has been emphasized in the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and the 2009 Revised Mathematics Curriculum. For this study, the researcher analyzed reports of creativity in mathematics in mathematics lessons from the perspectives of 55 preservice elementary school teachers. The preservice teachers observed 55 mathematics lessons focusing on creativity in mathematics during their two-week-student-teaching period. The results showed the followings. First, the preservice teachers had a narrow perceptions on creativity in mathematics. Second, observational experiences of mathematics lessons led the preservice teachers to reconsideration of creativity in mathematics. Third, the preservice teachers provided a various strategies to enhance students' creativity in mathematics. The researcher suggested the followings. First, definitions and practices of creativity in mathematics should be included in the teacher education programs. Second, mathematics textbooks should include creativity in mathematics in a sophisticated manner. Third, creativity-rich materials should be developed and distributed to teachers. Finally, well-designed teacher training programs should be necessary.
