  • This study is aimed at development of pedagogical content knowledge on fraction in the elementary school mathematics. Elementary students regard fraction as the difficult topic in school mathematics. Furthermore, fraction is the fundamentally important concept in studying mathematics. So it is important to develop the pedagogical content knowledge on fraction. The reason of attention to the pedagogical content knowledge is that improving the quality of teaching is the central focus of a high quality mathematics education. Shulman suggested that various knowledges are required for teacher to improve their classes. Of course, pedagogical content knowledge is the most valuable in teaching mathematics. Pedagogical content knowledge is related to the promotion of students' understanding about the learning. Pedagogical content knowledges are categorized by five factors in this study. These are understanding about curriculum, understanding about students and students' knowledge, understanding about teachers and teachers' knowledge, understanding about the methods, contents, and management of class, and understanding about methods of assessments. I develop the pedagogical content knowledge on fraction according to the these categories. I concentrate on the two types of pedagogical content knowledges in developing. That is, I present knowledges which teachers have to know for teaching fraction effectively and materials which teachers can use during the teaching fraction. Pedagogical content knowledges guarantee teachers as the professionalists. Teachers should not teach only content knowledges but teach various knowledges including the meta-knowledges which have relation to fraction.

  • Similarity between concept and concept, principle and principle, theory and theory is known as a strong motivation to mathematical knowledge construction. Metaphor and analogy are reasoning skills based on similarity. These two reasoning skills have been introduced as useful not only for mathematicians but also for students to make meaningful conjectures, by which mathematical knowledge is constructed. However, there has been lack of researches connecting the two reasoning skills. In particular, no research focused on the interplay between the two in didactic transposition. This study investigated the process of knowledge construction by metaphor and analogy and their roles in didactic transposition. In conclusion, three kinds of models using metaphor and analogy in didactic transposition were elaborated.

  • Teacher preparation programs are responsible for preparing teachers to be able to perform their work with professional knowledge and skills. What opportunities to learn such knowledge and skills the programs intentionally develop for prospective teachers can be discerned by looking at the curriculum of teacher education. The purpose of this study is to find implications for the curriculum in elementary teacher education in South Korea, especially as that pertains to opportunities to learn teaching mathematics. This paper compares the curricula of 21 teacher preparation programs for elementary teachers in South Korea and in the United States. It finds that the programs in both countries emphasize teacher preparation to teach subject matter and to help elementary students improve their academic knowledge. The overall structures of the curriculums outlined in the programs of both countries are relatively comparable. In terms of the opportunities to learn teaching mathematics, however, they are quite different in what authentic contents they offer. This paper discusses the need for more emphasis on mathematical knowledge for teaching.

  • This study is to establish the domains and the standards of instructional evaluation on the teacher knowledge dealing with the knowledge of 'teaching and learning methods and assessment'. Especially, in this study, the instruction assessment standards are developed focused on the six types of mathematics competencies such as problem solving, communication, reasoning, creativity and collaboration, information and handling, attitude and practice which were emphasized in the mathematical curriculum revised in 2015. By the result, seventh evaluation domains such as an instruction involving problem-solving activity, an instruction involving reasoning activity, instruction involving communication activity, instruction on information and handling activity, instruction involving learners' achievement level and attitude, instruction involving the development of assessment method and tool, instruction applying on assessment result were new established. According to those domains, the 19 instructional evaluation standards were developed totally. This study is limited to consider the domain of 'teaching and learning methods and assessment' among the domains of teacher knowledge, while dealing with the elements of mathematics competencies in the standards. However, instructional evaluation standards reflecting these competencies should be developed in the other diverse domains of teacher knowledge.

  • This study examines the effects of mathematics learning mentoring activities on mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) of pre-service mathematics teachers. We choose six pre-service mathematics teachers in the department of mathematics education at M University. The pre-service mathematics teachers conducted 1:1 mathematics learning mentoring for two hours at a times and twice a week for 15 weeks. The pre-service mathematics teachers submitted the mentor log, which recorded weekly learning and emotional observations. We collected the mentor log and the reflection log of pre-service mathematics teachers and the interviews with pre-service mathematics teachers. Based on the collected data, we analyzed the effects of MKT, the understanding of students, and pre-service mathematics teachers' introspection by mathematics learning mentoring. We obtained conclusions as follows. First, mathematics learning mentoring provides an opportunity for pre-service mathematics teachers to apply the theory of mathematical education to schools. Thus pre-service mathematics teachers express theoretical knowledge as practical knowledge. Second, mathematics learning mentoring helps pre-service mathematics teachers have the ability to understand students and provide opportunities to reflect on their attitudes as learners. Third, mathematics learning mentoring helps advance teaching activities by providing pre-service mathematics teachers with opportunities to reflect on their teaching activities. Finally, mathematics learning mentoring has positively influenced the change in pre-service mathematics teachers' beliefs and teaching intuition.
