  • This study searched the perception of observational evaluation system in visual art which elementary and middle school teachers have in mind. As results, observational evaluation system in visual art is widely accepted as important and efficient to diagnose the artistic giftedness. At the same time, subjectiveness of the system might be advantageous for student for whom teacher get favor and in-service program related to observational evaluation system is insufficient comparing to the demand from field. In spite of this, the scale for behavioral characteristics of the gifted in visual art and the test for artistic task performance are recognized as the most important and needed tools for evaluating artistic giftedness. Following the results, in order to raise up the validity and reliability of evaluation in visual art, the scales for behavioral characteristics of the gifted in visual art and the test for artistic task performance should be developed first and foremost.

In order to achieve the purpose of the study, 159 questions from the art and appointment examination over 7 years were collected and the ratio of evaluation content elements was analyzed for each of the 7 basic subjects and fields. As a result of the study, the proportion of evaluation content elements in each of the seven basic subjects and fields is also balanced at a considerable level. In other words, from 2009 to 2013, 55(50%) evaluation content elements were presented, compared to 71(64.5%) evaluation content elements from the 2018 teacher selection test to the 2024 school year. Despite this improvement, 39(35.5%) evaluation content elements were excluded, so improvement measures were discussed.

  • Mathematical principle is present in artwork or architectural building. It is important for middle school students to find these mathematical principles in artwork. But it is difficult to achieve original purpose of art education through student activity that only looks for mathematical principle present in artwork and architectural building. Thus, it is necessary for students to have activities to find mathematical principle in artwork for themselves through artistic experience and appreciation of artwork and to create, appreciate and express new artwork to which they apply the mathematical principle. In this article, I researched a couple of artwork or architectural buildings from this point of view in which mathematical principle is present. I also developed hypothetical teacher activities and student activities for program by providing artwork of Escher in which mathematical principle is present as an example.

  • The aims of this study were to organize whether the Kindergarten After School Specialized Art Program could be applicable to young children, and whether this program would be effective to the development of young children's art competence. This study consisted of two steps: development of the Kindergarten After School Specialized Art Program and examination of its impact on children's art competence. This study used a two-group pretest/posttest design. Statistical analyses employed for this study were descriptive analysis, ANOVA, and repeated measure ANOVA. The results were as follows. Firstly, the Kindergarten After School Specialized Art Program was developed based on a literature review relevant of current art education. Secondly, the experimental group revealed a significant improvement in four components, whereas the control group showed a significant, but slight improvement compared with the experimental group in only three components. Thirdly, in between group comparison, a competencies on the four components based on multiple-creative ability in the experiment group were higher than that of the control group and the difference between both groups was statistically significant. Therefore, the program seemed to be effective in the improvement of art competence and multiple-creative ability. In addition, recommendation for the future research about after school teachers' and parents' recognition of the Kindergarten After School Specialized Art Program and strategies for its application are suggested.

  • While many research focused learners as those who excel in mathematics or science, the identification of learners with potential or demonstrated talent in visual art has also been the meaningful research topic. Since these learners exhibit high performance capability in intellectual, creative and artistic areas, they require services or programs not ordinarily provided by the schools. This research tried to clarify what high performance means when speaking of learners with outstanding talent in the visual arts based on the relevant literature. Also, this research introduced the recent trends in the field of art gifted and talented education. In order to demonstrate critical issues and find new directions in art education for gifted learners, this research conducted the survey, and this survey target group was arts high school students. Based on the survey analysis, this research conducted the semi-structured interviews with focal participants including the teachers and an artist. Interviewees generated many meaningful issues, and interview analysis reconceptualized art education for gifted learners as following. 1) Gifted education should consider learners' excellence, equity, troubles, and struggles that often go unnoticed. 2) We should reform the criteria, standards, and strategies in finding art gifted learners. 3) In order to facilitate meaningful and creative art education, higher education institutions need to change the current college entrance exam. 4) The goal of gifted art education is not only raising the world-class artists. 5) Meaningful art education for gifted learners is in interaction with the environment including group dynamics, parents influence, and teachers.
