Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine what image dental hygiene students had about a dental hygienist during clinical practice and what factors affected their image of dental hygienist. Methods : The subjects in this study were the dental hygiene students at three different colleges. After a survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 427 respondents were analyzed. Results : The dental hygiene students who had engaged in clinical practice had a higher self-esteem than those who hadn't in general(p<0.01). A statistically significantly stronger achievement motivation was found among the dental hygiene students who had engaged in clinical practice than those who hadn't(p<0.01). The dental hygiene students who had engaged in clinical practice had a statistically significantly worse image of a dental hygienist than the others who hadn't(p<0.01). Whether the self-efficacy, self-esteem and achievement motivation of the dental hygiene students had any impact on their image of a dental hygienist was analyzed in consideration of their clinical practice experience. As a result, the dental hygiene students who had engaged in clinical practice had a more positive image of a dental hygienist when they had a higher self-esteem(p<0.05) and a stronger achievement motivation(p<0.001), and those who hadn't engaged in clinical practice had a more positive image of a dental hygienist when they had a higher self-esteem(p<0.01). Conclusions : Given the above-mentioned findings, a wide variety of programs should be developed to bolster the self-esteem and achievement motivation of students and improve their image of a dental hygienist, as self-esteem and achievement motivation are the variables that exert the largest influence on one's image of a dental hygienist.
The purpose of this Study was to examine the effect of perfectionism on stress and anxiety during scaling practice in an effort to find efficient way of helping students with getting good skills. The subjects in this study were students who practiced a scaling at the oral hygiene practice lab in the Department of dental hygiene in S college from May 1 to May 31, 2008. They were divided into four groups based on their subscales of perfectionism : mixed perfectionist group, achievement striving perfectionist group, failure avoidance perfectionist group and non-perfectionist group. The measurements used were Two-Dimensional Perfectionism Scale, Stress level, Trait anxiety, State anxiety. There were no significant differences in the stress level before practice between 4 groups. There were significant differences in trait anxiety, state anxiety, total anxiety before scaling practice between 4 groups. However, these results were due to differences between mixed perfectionist group and non-perfectionist group. After practice, total anxiety was decreased from 93.71 to 89.66 and state anxiety was decreased from 45.49 to 43.38. These results were statistically significant. In order to investigate the influence of achievement striving factor and failure avoidance factor on the change of state anxiety during the scaling practice Standard Multiple Regression were employed for the statistical analysis. Failure avoidance factor was related with the increase of state anxiety during the scaling practice. So leachers have to give all effort to reduce the anxiety of students during scaling practice and provide students with motivation of achievement.

This study analyzes the processes of change in oral health behaviors induced by oral health education for 23 university students. To this end, we analyzed the changing patterns of the stages of change and motivational components for each oral health behavior. Additionally, we performed an in-depth interview-based investigation of the factors influencing such motivational components. Oral health education was performed twice with a concrete purpose of changing the participants' behaviors in complying with the practice of proper brushing and flossing as the main oral health management, and checking the nutrient facts as a good dietary habit. Upon completion of these two sessions of oral health education, the level of change in oral health behavior was assessed by measuring the stages of change and motivational components for each oral health behavior. In order to gain an in-depth understanding of the reasons for the changes that were demonstrated more markedly during the second education session than during the first session, collective interview surveys were carried out after the second session. The contents of the recorded interviews were categorized into subscales of distinctive concepts on the basis of the items of a health behavior model. The study had the findings as below. First, after the first and second education sessions, some behaviors showed positive changes from lower to higher levels of practice. Second, self-efficacy about oral health behavior was high or perceived barriers were low when its necessity and benefits were clearly perceived. Third, educational features such as the practice and participation-centered education, and examining their own oral conditions influenced the participants' oral health awareness and behavioral changes. There is a need for oral health education capable of leading to practical behavioral changes by establishing concrete strategies of deriving various motivational components at each stage of the processes of change.

Experimental group decreased more and more the result of changes in the reduction of the average of the PCR. But control group was reduced to 3 weeks and increased back to the middle 16 weeks. There was also support interaction between the measurement point and the groups (p<0.05). The purpose of this study was to understand the comprehensive relationship among sense of coherence, clinical practice stress, and major satisfaction of students in the department of dental hygiene. From four local universities, departments of dental hygiene were selected: two departments represented a three-year curriculum system and two represented a four-year curriculum system. Data from the final questionnaires of 319 students were analyzed. Differences between variables were analyzed using t-tests and ANOVAs, and correlations were checked using Pearson's correlation coefficients. Path analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship among clinical practice stress, sense of coherence, and major satisfaction. The results indicated that clinical practice stress had a negative influential relationship with both sense of coherence, and major satisfaction. In addition, sense of coherence had a positive influential relationship with major satisfaction. The direct and indirect effects among factors displayed significant differences, indicating that clinical practice stress has a partial mediation effect on sense of coherence and major satisfaction. Therefore, major satisfaction can be increased by developing and implementing programs to improve sense of coherence.
