  • The purpose of this study was to identify the convergence influencing factors on nursing students' awareness of caregiving for the elderly. The participants were 130 nursing students from S University located in W city. Data were collected from July 1 to December 31, 2021, and the collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 statistical program. As a result of the study, there were statistically significant differences in dementia awareness according to general characteristics in gender, dementia related practice and education experience, and elderly related educational experience, empathy in elderly related practice experience, and the awareness of caregiving for the elderly in dementia interest (Yes). The awareness of caregiving for the elderly showed a positive correlation with empathy (r=.380, p<.01), and the factor effecting the awareness of caregiving for the elderly was dementia interest (yes) (𝛽=.283, p<.001) and empathy (𝛽=.354, p<.001), the explanatory power was 21.8%. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and provide a nursing curriculum or program that can improve empathy ability in order to cultivate nursing students' the awareness of caregiving for the elderly.

  • This study investigated the effect of pre service teacher's empathic ability on teaching ethics, and child abuse report intention. The subjects were 168 pre-service teachers attending a university located in a micropolitan city. Questionnaires, which required self-reporting by pre service teacher, were used to investigate teacher's empathic ability, teaching ethics and child abuse report intention. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, percent, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis and stepwise-regression analysis. From the major study findings, first, pre-service teacher's empathic ability was positively correlated with teaching ethics and child abuse report intention. Pre-service teacher's "take perspective", "imagine" of the cognitive empathic ability's subfactor was positively correlated with teaching ethics. Especially, empathic interest was positively correlated with teaching ethics. Cognitive empathy ability showed the highest relationship with ethics for early child. Emotional empathy showed the highest relationship with ethics in society. Second, the pre-service teacher's teaching ethics were influenced by taking perspective, imagining, and empathic attention. These results demonstrate the need to incorporate perspectives in the development of programs to promote pre - service early childhood teacher ethics and child abuse reporting.

We randomly assigned 30 children of one class to the experimental group and 30 children of the other class to the controlled group. The personality education activities based on the roots of empathy program was by the researcher. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the personality education activities based on the roots of empathy program improved children's empathic ability. And that effects are shown in all sub-areas of empathic ability(sorrow/burden/joy/fear). Second, the personality education activities based on the roots of empathy program improved children's emotional intelligence. And that effects are shown in all sub-areas of emotional intelligence(recognition and expression of emotion/promotion of thinking by emotion/application of emotional knowledge/emotional reflective control).

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between empathy, communicative competence, and cultural competence among nursing students and investigate the factors influencing cultural competence. The subjects of the study consisted of 173 nursing students. Data were analyzed based on Pearson's correlations, and multiple regressions using the SPSS 18.0 program. The mean value of cultural competence was 3.44, showing significant positive correlations with empathy(r=.450, p<.001) and communicative competence(r=.579, p<.001) in nursing students. Empathy, communicative competence and foreign language skill accounted for 37.1% of the total variance in cultural competence among nursing students. Overall cultural competence can be improved by empathy, communicative competence enhancement program.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze converged factors affecting compassion competence in clinical nurses. This is a descriptive correlation research to examine converged factors affecting compassion competence of clinical nurses. Research objects are 233 nurses working in three general hospitals located in Chungnam province, and who understand the purposes of this research and agree to participate in this research. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used. The variable which has the greatest effect on compassion competence was compassion satisfaction, followed by clinical experience, compassion fatigue, with those 3 variables explaining 34.4% of compassion competence. Therefore it is necessary to develop specific education programs to improve compassion competence of nurses. Since the explaining power of three variables to compassion competence is 34.4%, it is necessary to add more meaningful variables to explain compassion competence of clinical nurses.

The purpose of this research is to offer basic data for establishing both amoral and emotional educational program. The subjects of this research involve 182 children(either 4 or 5 year olds) that have lived in Korea. Analysis of the collected data have yielded some interesting results. First, it is found that children's empathy and sympathy are dependent on children's age and their fathers' educational level; as a result, increasing the age of the children and their fathers' educational level are found to increase empathy and sympathy. Secondly, both empathy and sympathy scores are found to have correlation to the scores of positive reciprocity, capability, and interpersonal relation on social competence. Sympathy scores increase with respect to the leadership scores of social competence. Lastly, children's empathy is a factor that affects positive reciprocity, capability, interpersonal relation, and participation on social competence. Their sympathy affects leadership on social competence. The results of this study suggest that strengthening the empathy and sympathy levels of children could partially enhance their social competence.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine 'Design Thinking' based Chemistry Class program as an education strategy for core competence of creative convergence talent. The program stages were modified and supplemented into eight stages, including 'Knowledge Understand', 'Empathy', 'Sharing perspective', 'Ideate', '1st Prototype', '1st Test', '2nd Prototype', and '2nd Test', so that the 'Design Thinking Process in Science Education' can be applied to the chemistry class. Considering the linkage between the 2015 and 2009 revised national curriculum, the achievement criteria were selected, and the lesson plans and student activity sheet were developed according to the themes to be met. Four thematic educational programs were developed and applied to Chemistry I for the second grade of high school students from March to August. The results were verified through qualitative data analysis of the class scene and pre- and post-test based on inventories of 'Empathy' 'STEAM educational competence', 'Problem solving process'. As a result of applying the developed program, 'empathy' showed a significant improvement in empathy with others and empathy with the problem situation. In 'STEAM educational competence', there was a significant enhancement in science and design competence. In the 'problem finding process', the problem definition, problem solution design, and problem-solving review were significantly improved in the 'problem-solving process'. The results of this study provided implications for the applicability of design thinking - based chemistry classes and its educational effect.
