  • The group Hameo (M, $\omega$) of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of a connected symplectic manifold (M, $\omega$) was defined and studied in [7] and further in [6]. In these papers, the authors consistently used the $L^{(1,{\infty})}$-Hofer norm (and not the $L^{\infty}$-Hofer norm) on the space of Hamiltonian paths (see below for the definitions). A justification for this choice was given in [7]. In this article we study the $L^{\infty}$-case. In view of the fact that the Hofer norm on the group Ham (M, $\omega$) of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms does not depend on the choice of the $L^{(1,{\infty})}$-norm vs. the $L^{\infty}$-norm [9], Y.-G. Oh and D. McDuff (private communications) asked whether the two notions of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms arising from the different norms coincide. We will give an affirmative answer to this question in this paper.

  • When the input features are generated by factors in a classification problem, it is more meaningful to identify important factors, rather than individual features. The $F_{\infty}$-norm support vector machine(SVM) has been developed to perform automatic factor selection in classification. However, the $F_{\infty}$-norm SVM may suffer from estimation inefficiency and model selection inconsistency because it applies the same amount of shrinkage to each factor without assessing its relative importance. To overcome such a limitation, we propose the adaptive $F_{\infty}$-norm ($AF_{\infty}$-norm) SVM, which penalizes the empirical hinge loss by the sum of the adaptively weighted factor-wise $L_{\infty}$-norm penalty. The $AF_{\infty}$-norm SVM computes the weights by the 2-norm SVM estimator and can be formulated as a linear programming(LP) problem which is similar to the one of the $F_{\infty}$-norm SVM. The simulation studies show that the proposed $AF_{\infty}$-norm SVM improves upon the $F_{\infty}$-norm SVM in terms of classification accuracy and factor selection performance.

  • We consider the finite element method applied to nonlinear Sobolev equation with smooth data and demonstrate for arbitrary order ($k{\geq}2$) finite element spaces the optimal rate of convergence in $L_{\infty}\;W^{1,{\infty}}({\Omega})$ and $L_{\infty}(L_{\infty}({\Omega}))$ (quasi-optimal for k = 1). In other words, the nonlinear Sobolev equation can be approximated equally well as its linear counterpart. Furthermore, we also obtain superconvergence results in $L_{\infty}(W^{1,{\infty}}({\Omega}))$ for the difference between the approximate solution and the generalized elliptic projection of the exact solution.

  • We investigate density estimation problem in the L$^{\infty}$ norm and show that the iii optimal minimax rates are achieved for smooth classes of weakly dependent stationary sequences. Our results are then applied to give uniform convergence rates for various problems including the Gibbs sampler.

  • In this paper, we consider the mixed $L_1/H_{\infty}$ problems of finding internally stabilizing controllers which minimize the peak-to-peak gain of a certain closed loop transfer function with $H_{\infty}$-norm constraint on other closed loop transfer function(or vise versa). This problem is a useful framework for designing a controller with the norm constraints upon time and frequency domain. We formulate the mixed $L_1/H_{\infty}$ problem as LMI problems by using the reachable set. This paper offers the sufficient condition for the existence of suboptimal state feedback controller, and shows that suboptimal solution can be obtained by solving a finite-dimensional convex optimization and a line search.

  • this paper deal with the estimation of the power spectral density function of time series. A kernel estimator which is based on local average is defined and the rates of convergence of the pointwise, $$L_2$-norm; and; $L{\infty}$-norm associated with the estimator are investigated by restricting as to kernels with suitable assumptions. Under appropriate regularity conditions, it is shown that the optimal rate of convergence for 0$N^{-r}$ both in the pointwiseand $$L_2$-norm, while; $N^{r-1}(logN)^{-r}$is the optimal rate in the $L{\infty}-norm$. Some examples are given to illustrate the application of main results.

  • In this paper we derive a priori $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ error estimates for expanded mixed finite element formulations of semilinear Sobolev equations. This formulation expands the standard mixed formulation in the sense that three variables, the scalar unknown, the gradient and the flux are explicitly treated. Based on this method we construct finite element semidiscrete approximations and fully discrete approximations of the semilinear Sobolev equations. We prove the existence of semidiscrete approximations of u, $-{\nabla}u$ and $-{\nabla}u-{\nabla}u_t$ and obtain the optimal order error estimates in the $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ norm. And also we construct the fully discrete approximations and analyze the optimal convergence of the approximations in ${\ell}^{\infty}(L^2)$ norm. Finally we also provide the computational results.

  • Previously obtained results of L$_{2}$-gain and H$_{\infty}$ control via state feedback of nonlinear systems are extended to a class of nonlinear system with uncertainties. The required information about the uncertainties is that the uncertainties are bounded in Euclidian norm by known functions of the system state. The conditions are characterized in terms of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equations or inequalities (HJEI). An algorithm for finding an approximate local solution of Hamilton-Jacobi equation is given. This results and algorithm are illustrated on a numerical example..

  • We classify all the extreme and exposed bilinear forms of the unit ball of ${\mathcal{L}}(^2l^3_{\infty})$ which leads to a complete formula of ${\parallel}f{\parallel}$ for every $f{\in}{\mathcal{L}}(^2l^3_{\infty})^*$. It follows from this formula that every extreme bilinear form of the unit ball of ${\mathcal{L}}(^2l^3_{\infty})$ is exposed.

  • An algorithm of finding a solution to an $H^{\infty}$-minimization problem is proposed, and the solution is obtained explicity in terms of closed-form. We construct an optimal controller subject to the interpolation constraints such that $H^{\infty}$-norm and the minimized value of transfer function matrix are equal.l.
