Aim & Scope
The Journal of International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (JICEMS) is going to be published quarterly. It is a joint publication of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers (KIEE), the Institute of Electrical Engineering of Japan(IEEJ), and the China Electrotechnical Society (CES). It includes all topics in the fields of electric machines, power electronics and emerging energy systems.

A novel segment type switched reluctance motor (SRM) as a rare-earth-less motor is proposed. The torque was increased by 40% and the radial force was decreased by 76% compared with the same size usual variable reluctance (VR) type SRM. Increasing the average torque, however, caused increasing torque ripple. In this paper we develop a 4-phase segment type SRM and show that the torque ripple can be decreased well. -

The voltage source PWM inverter generally used to drive the air conditioning (A/C) fans has been posing a large issue that the bearings in air conditioning fan motors are highly possible to be corroded electrically. Potential difference called shaft voltage is generated between inner and outer rings of the bearings due to inverter switching. The shaft voltage causes bearing lubricant breakdown dielectrically. As a result, bearing current is caused. This current causes the bearing corrosion. In previous work, we demonstrated that the shaft voltage can be reduced by using an insulator inserted between the outer and inner cores of the rotor in an air conditioning fan motor without grounding. This paper proposes the other countermeasure for reducing the shaft voltage in fan motors. The countermeasure which adds a capacitor between the brackets and the stator core is effective even for fan motors with non-insulated rotor. The effectiveness is confirmed by both simulated and experimental results. -
As more vehicles become equipped with advanced electronic control systems, more consideration is needed with regards to automotive safety issues related to the effects of electromagnetic waves. Unwanted electromagnetic waves from the antenna, electricity and other electronic devices cause the performance and safety problem of automotive components. In general, Power Integrity and Signal Integrity analysis have been widely used, but these analyses have stayed PCB level. PCB base analysis is different from radiated emission TEST condition so its results are used just for reference. This paper proposes EMC optimization technology using module level 3-dimensional radiation simulation process closed to fundamental test conditions. If module level EMC analysis, which is proposed in this study, is applied to all automotive electronics systems, unexpected EMC noise will be prevented.

In the case of long-stator linear drives, unlike rotative drives for which speed or position sensors are a single unit attached to the shaft, these sensors extend along the guideway. The position signal transmitted from maglev vehicle can't meet the need of the real-time propulsion control. In this paper the position estimator for propulsion inverter driving long stator linear synchronous motor (LSLSM) in high speed maglev train is proposed. In order to get the higher resolution of the position information transmitted from vehicle, Full order state observer is proposed for position estimator. -

Torque ripple is a very essential index for evaluating the effectiveness of a switched reluctance motor (SRM). Many common design strategies for reducing torque ripples of a SRM are changing the excitation trigger angle of stator windings, delaying the cut-off time of winding excitation, adjusting the ratio of arc angle between stator and rotor, and changing the geometric shape of rotor. However, the output torque or the efficiency of the SRM may drop as the above design strategies are solely adopted. In this paper, a hybrid design model which is obtained by the Taguchi Method for optimally designing a SRM with lower torque ripple and higher efficiency is presented. A 12S/8P motor is taken as a study case, and the 3D finite element method (FEM) is applied to analyze the characteristics of the motor and optimize the design process. The results have shown that the proposed method can achieve the design goal of obtaining a high-performance SRM for light electric vehicle applications. -

Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) in single-phase to interface distributed renewable energy resources is investigated in this paper. Mathematical models and numerical analysis are utilized to illustrate the features of the VSG. Enhanced control strategy is presented to ensure the performance of the VSG. Besides, a second order generalized integer (SOGI) is employed to calculate the instantaneous output power of the VSG in virtual${\alpha}{\beta}$ frame. By the means of a phase-locked loop based scheme, the VSG can seamlessly transform between islanded and grid-tied modes, which can meet the requirements of micro-grid. At last, the validation and the proposed approach are verified by the simulated results using PSCAD/EMTDC. -

An improved fuzzy Kalman filtering speed estimation scheme was proposed by means of measuring stator side voltage and current value based on vector control state equation of induction motor. The designed fuzzy adaptive controller conducted recursive online correction of measurement noise covariance matrix by monitoring the ratio of theory residuals and actual residuals to make it approach real noise level gradually, allowing the filter to perform optimal estimation to improve estimation accuracy of EKF. Meanwhile, co-simulation scheme based on MATLAB and Ansoft was proposed in order to improve simulation accuracy. Field-circuit coupling problems of induction motor under the action of vector control were solved and the parameter optimization accuracy was improved dramatically. The simulation and experimental results show that this algorithm has a strong ability to inhibit the random measurement noise. It is able to estimate motor speed accurately, and has superior static and dynamic characteristics. -

The electric power conversion system constructed by connecting two or more power converters in parallel is an advantageous method for making to large capacity and standardization. In this paper, the control method of cross current when three power converters are operated is examined, and it reexamined a preferable system construction method. -

A large capacity power conversion system constructed by using two or more existing power converters has a lot of flexibility in how the power converters are used. However, at the same time, it has a problem of cross current flows between power converters. The cross current must be suppressed by controlling the system while miniaturizing the combination reactor. This paper focuses on two current control methods of a power conversion system constructed by using two power converters connected in parallel supplying the same power. In order to elucidate the control performance of cross current, each control method which are aimed at controlling cross current and not directly controlling it are examined in simulations. -
This paper proposed a novel high performance sensorless control scheme for IPMSM based on an extended nonlinear state observer. The gain-matrix of the observer has been derived by using state linearization method. Steady state errors in estimated rotor position and speed due to parameter inaccuracy have been analyzed, and an equivalent flux error is defined to represent the overall effect of parameter errors contributing to the wrong convergence of the estimated rotor speed as well as rotor position. Then, an online compensation strategy was proposed to limit the estimation errors in rotor position and speed. The effectiveness of the extended nonlinear state observer is validated through simulation and experimental test.

In this paper, a novel topology for cascade multilevel converter is introduced, which has many levels with fewer number of power electronic components. Less number of the switches leads to the reduction of size, losses, simple control strategy and high efficiency. For proposed multilevel converter, a new algorithm for determination of dc voltage source values has been recommended. The performance and operation of the proposed multilevel converter has been evaluated with the simulation results of a cascade 25-level converter. -

In this paper, a new switching pattern is presented for multilevel inverters. With changing off-angel of each switch, the on time interval of all switches will approximately be equal and then the lifetime of inverter will increase, also using this method can reduce electrical stress on switches in higher levels of inverter. Switching angels as for desired modulation index are calculated using genetic algorithm whereas selective harmonics are controlled within the allowable range. The computed angels are simulated in Matlab/Simulink for respective circuits to validate the results. -

This paper describes a turnout without movable parts for magnetically levitated vehicles with hybrid magnets, which have been studied by the authors in place of streetcars. Their low construction cost and low maintenance is key to their practical use. Magnetic levitation systems using forces of attraction can generate guidance force automatically, but the damping force against lateral motion is negligible. However, the lateral damping characteristic was improved by using divided iron type magnets and rails. Using this turnout without movable parts will facilitate smooth direction switching. -
The forces involved in the firing of the electromagnetic rail gun may be analyzed from Amperian, Maxwellian and Einsteinian approaches. This paper discusses these different paradigms with regard to rail gun performance modeling relating to the generation and balance of the forces caused by the currents and their induced magnetic fields. Recent experimental work on model rail guns, where the armature is held static, shows very little recoil upon the rails, thereby indicating a possible violation of Newton's Third Law of Motion. Dynamic testing to show this violation, as suggested by the authors in an earlier paper, has inherent technical difficulties. A purpose-built finite element C/C++ simulator that models that suspended rail gun firing action shows a net force acting upon the entire rail gun system. A new effect in physics, universal in scope, is thus indicated: a current circulating in an asymmetric and rigid circuit causes a net force to act upon the circuit for the duration of the current. This conclusion following from computer simulation based upon Maxwellian electrodynamics as opposed to the more modern relativistic quantum electrodynamics needs to be supported by unambiguous experimental validation.

Eddy current induction is used in a wide range of electronic devices, for example in detection sensors. Due to the advances in computer hardware and software, the need for 3D computation and system comprehension is a requirement to develop and optimize such devices nowadays. Pure theoretical models are mostly limited to special cases. On the other hand, the classical use of commercial Finite Element (FE) electromagnetic 3D models is not computationally efficient and lacks modeling flexibility or robustness. The proposed approach focuses on: (1) implementing theoretical formulations in 3D (FE) model of a detection device as well as (2) an automatic Volumetric Estimation Method (VEM) developed to selectively model the target finite elements. Due to these two approaches, this model is suitable for parametric studies and optimization of the number, location, shape, and size of PCB receivers in order to get the desired target discrimination information preserving high accuracy with tenfold reduction in computation time compared to commercial FE software.

When large penetration of the distributed generators (DGs) such as photovoltaic (PV) systems is growing up in grid system, it is important to quickly prevent islanding caused by power system fault to ensure electrical safety. We propose a novel active method for islanding prevention by harmonic injection synchronized with the exciting current harmonics of the pole transformer to avoid mutual interference between active signals. We confirm the validity of the proposed method by performing the basic tests of islanding by using a current source superimposed the harmonic active signal. Further, we carry out the simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC, and verify the fast islanding detection. -

A straightforward method for optimal determining of a high frequency inductor's parasitic capacitance is presented. The proposed estimation method is based on measuring the inductor's impedance samples over a limited frequency range bordering on the resonance point considering k-dB deviation from the maximum impedance. An optimized solution to k could be obtained by minimizing the root mean squared error between the measured and the estimated impedance values. The model used to provide the estimations is a parallel RLC circuit valid at resonance frequency which will be transferred to the real model considering the mentioned interval of frequencies. A straightforward algorithm is suggested and programmed using MATLAB which does not require a wide knowledge of design parameters and could be implemented using a spectrum analyzer. The inputs are the measured impedance samples as a function of frequency along with the diameter of the conductors. The suggested algorithm practically provides the estimated parameters of a real inductance model at different frequencies, with or without design information. The suggested work is different from designing a high frequency inductor; it is rather concentration of determining the parameters of an available real inductor that could be easily done by a recipe provided to a technician. -

The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) can flexibly manage power flow and maintain line voltage. The UPFC consists of two inverters in parallel side and series side. In parallel side, the reactive power can be compensated to improve the power factor. In series side, the voltage drop can be compensated to maintain proper line voltage. It is necessary for the operation in both sides to output the current and the voltage quickly and accurately. As the method for the UPFC control, the deadbeat control with state observer is applied. The deadbeat control is able to realize a quick response of the current and voltage control for only a sampling period compared with the general PI control. A principle and simulation results are presented in this paper.
