  • Mathematics is a way of thinking. To do mathematics means to think mathematically. In other words, mathematics education and mathematics literacy are related. In elementary and secondary school mathematics education in many countries, teaching of mathematics using textbooks is conducted mostly in their native language. So mathematics education takes place while reading, writing, listening, and speaking mathematics. Analysis of mathematics textbooks for the lower grades of undergraduate mathematics shows that most advanced countries in mathematics use excellent undergraduate mathematics textbooks written in their native language. However, the ratio of using imported textbooks from foreign countries is particularly high in the case of textbooks for mathematics majors at Korean universities. In this article, the effect of language used in university mathematics education is analized. In particular, the importance of high-quality leading-edge university mathematics textbooks in native language is introduced by analyzing the case of Bourbaki in France and 'War of language' at the Israel Institute of Technology. The innovation of French university mathematics education in the 20th century began with Bourbaki's 'Fundamentals of Mathematics', a French textbook written in his native language. Israel's Technion and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem continue to teach all subjects in their mother tongue. This has led to produce many Nobel Prize and Fields medal winners in these two countries. This study shows that textbooks and languages used in university mathematics education has affected mathematical literacy.

Relations between undergraduates' motivations and emotions for learning mathematics in mathematics class centered on peer discussions : focusing on their needs (동료 간 토의 중심의 수학 수업에서 대학생들의 수학 학습 동기와 수학 학습 감정의 관계: 욕구를 중심으로)

  • This study analyzed how university students' motivations for learning mathematics and emotions for learning mathematics occur and how they relate to each other by introducing the factor called needs in the particular context of mathematics learning, mathematics class centered on peer discussions. We conceptualized the key concepts of the study, motivation for learning mathematics and emotion for learning mathematics. Based on them, we drew specific ways to observe motivation and emotion for learning mathematics and conduct the research. As a result, motivations for learning mathematics occurred to satisfy some needs. Also, positive emotions for learning mathematics occurred when some needs were satisfied, whereas negative emotion for learning mathematics occurred when some needs were not satisfied. Furthermore, when the needs leading to motivations for leaning mathematics were satisfied, positive emotions for learning mathematics occurred. The unfulfilled needs leading to negative emotions for learning mathematics make motivations for learning mathematics occur to satisfy those needs.

  • Researchers at Truman State University in Missouri, located in the heartland of the United States, have been using materials adapted from the English translations of the sixth national primary mathematics curriculum from Korea for professional development and assessment with groups of Missouri teachers for the purpose of enhancing teachers' understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics since 2002 [gecKo Mathematics (2008). Korean Mathematics in American Classrooms. Edited by J. Grow-Maienza. Adapted from Korean Mathematics (2001). Kirksville, MO: Truman State University. http://kmath.truman.edu/]. A professional development initiative for 50 teachers conducted in Missouri this past year is reported here. Significant gains in teacher understanding of fundamental mathematics concepts and pedagogy necessary for student achievement in primary mathematics were found as a result of the initiative.

  • This study aims to investigate relationships among self-directed learning readiness [SDLR], prerequisite mathematics test score and achievement level in college mathematics. For this purpose, the adjusted SDLRS (self-directed learning readiness scale) of Guglielmino's model, the score of mathematics diagnostic assesment and first semester college mathematics score among 424 freshmen students of engineering department of D university in 2011 were used and analyzed. Research results are as follows: Firstly, freshmen of engineering department had average level of SDLR, though they showed relative low level of self-direction, passion and time control ability. Secondly, considering SDLR with the mathematics diagnostic assesment score (3 groups: high, middle, low), there were no statistically significant differences. Thirdly, concerning SDLR according to the achievement level in college mathematics, a group which acquired good achievement showed higher level of SDLR compared with middle or lowachievement group. Differences among three groups were statistically significant. Lastly, there were affirmative relationships between SDLR, mathematics diagnostic assesment score and achievement in college mathematics. Furthermore, mathematics diagnostic assesment score and achievement level in college mathematics were found to be the most closely related. Based on the results, we suggest strategies to elevate SDLR of engineering department students and improve their achievement in college mathematics.

  • In this study, we investigated the application of oriental history of mathematics in school mathematics teaching. We set up three study problems to achieve this purpose. First, we analyze the middle and high school mathematics textbooks and auxiliary books. Second, we survey the mathematics teacher's knowledge and degree of application on history of mathematics. Third, we develop the teaching and learning materials on oriental history of mathematics. We performed three study-methods to settle above study problem. First, we analyzed 24 textbooks and auxiliary books for study problem 1. There were 6 middle school mathematics textbooks and 6 auxiliary books and also 6 high school mathematics textbooks and 6 auxiliary books. We categorized the contents into "anecdote", "systematization", "application of problem", "expansibility of thought", and "comparative of the contents". Second, we surveyed the 78 mathematics teachers's knowledge and degree of application using questionnaire about knowledge and application on history of mathematics. The questionnaire was made up of four types of question; the effect of material about history of mathematics, the understanding of western history of mathematics, the understanding of oriental history of mathematics; the direction of development of teaching material. Third, we exemplified the teaching and learning materials about three categories: "anecdote", "comparative of the contents".

  • In this paper, the concepts of soft PMS-algebras, soft PMS-subalgebras, soft PMS-ideals, and idealistic soft PMS-algebras are introduced, and their properties are studied. The restricted intersection, the extended intersection, union, AND operation, and the cartesian product of soft PMS-algebras, soft PMS-subalgebras, soft PMS-ideals, and idealistic soft PMS-algebras are established. Moreover, the homomorphic image and homomorphic pre-image of soft PMS-algebras are also studied.
