  • In this paper, we consider a conjecture of I. N. Herstein for local commutators of symmetric elements and unitary elements of division rings. For example, we show that if D is a finite dimensional division ring with involution ${\star}$ and if $a{\in}D^*=D{\setminus}\{0\}$ such that local commutators $axa^{-1}x^{-1}$ at a are radical over the center F of D for every $x{\in}D^*$ with $x^{\star}=x$, then either $a{\in}F$ or ${\dim}_F\;D=4$.

  • Let A(z), W(z) and C(z) be power series with operator coefficients such that W(z) = A(z)C(z). Let D(A) and D(C) be the state spaces of unitary linear systems whose transfer functions are A(z) and C(z) respectively. Then there exists a Krein space D which is the state space of unitary linear system with transfer function W(z). And the element of D is of the form (f(z) + A(z)h(z), k(z) + C*(z)g(z)) where (f(z),g(z)) is in D(A) and (h(z),k(z)) is in D(C).

  • Let R be a finite commutative ring with nonzero identity. We define ${\Gamma}(R)$ to be the graph with vertex set R in which two distinct vertices x and y are adjacent if and only if there exists a unit element u of R such that x + uy is a unit of R. This graph provides a refinement of the unit and unitary Cayley graphs. In this paper, basic properties of ${\Gamma}(R)$ are obtained and the vertex connectivity and the edge connectivity of ${\Gamma}(R)$ are given. Finally, by a constructive way, we determine when the graph ${\Gamma}(R)$ is Hamiltonian. As a consequence, we show that ${\Gamma}(R)$ has a perfect matching if and only if ${\mid}R{\mid}$ is an even number.

  • We prove that two essentially normal elements of a type $II_{\infty}$ factor von Neumann algebra are unitarily equivalent up to the compact ideal if and only if they have the identical essential spectrum and the same index data. Also we calculate the spectrum and essential spectrum of a non-unitary isometry of von Neumann algebra.

  • Krylov-Schur iteration method has been applied to the 3-Dim. resonant cavity of a cylindrical form. The vector Helmholtz equation has been analysed for the resonant field strength in homogeneous media by FEM. An eigen-equation has been constructed from element equations basing on tangential edges of the tetrahedra element. This equation made up of two square matrices associated with the curl-curl form of the Helmholtz operator. By performing Krylov-Schur iteration loops on them, Eigen-values and their modes have been determined from the diagonal components of the Schur matrices and its transforming matrices. Eigen-pairs as a result have been revealed visually in the schematic representations. The spectra have been compared with each other to identify the effect of boundary conditions.

  • Previously T.Porter [3] has given a relative Chinese Remainder Theorem under the hypothesis that given ring R has at least one .tau.-closed maximal ideal (by his notation Ma $x_{\tau}$(R).neq..phi.). In this short paper we drop his overall hypothesis that Ma $x_{\tau}$(R).neq..phi. and give the proof and some related results with this Theorem. In this paper R will always denote a commutative ring with identity element and all modules will be unitary left R-modules unless otherwise specified. Let .tau. be a given hereditarty torsion theory for left R-module category R-Mod. The class of all .tau.-torsion left R-modules, dented by J is closed under homomorphic images, submodules, direct sums and extensions. And the class of all .tau.-torsionfree left R-modules, denoted by F, is closed under taking submodules, injective hulls, direct products, and isomorphic copies ([2], Proposition 1.7 and 1.10).
