Many countries have interested in islands with their values in nature such as future sustainable resource and new expansion of marine territory. As territorial and cultural assets, these islands have been the source of our national competitiveness and, then, Korean government has initiated island management policy that provides a basis for the development and protection of islands. Consequently, spatial data and database for resource management have been required. In this sense, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the condition and status of various natural resources in Jeju islands. Jeju has 63 islands including 55 uninhabited islands. Then, an Island Information System(IIS) based on geographical information system(GIS) has been proposed. This ISS will provide not only a measure for effective resource management but also systematic services for releasing useful resource information.

This study analyzed the distribution characteristics of invasive alien plants on the islands of the Korean Peninsula. Ten species, Rumex acetosella, Sicyos angulatus, Solanum carolinense, Ambrosia artemisiaefolia var. elatior, Ambrosia trifida, Aster pilosus, Eupatorium rugosum, Hypochaeris radicata, Lactuca scariola, and Paspalum distichum were present on 68 islands. These ecosystem-disturbing invasive alien plants appeared extensively on the islands of Gyeonggi province and Jeollanam province. The proportion of the plants on the inhabited islands (41 places, 2.15 species on average) was higher than that on the uninhabited islands (27 places, 1.07 species on average). This means that the distribution of invasive alien plants was closely related to human activity. The distribution of Ambrosia artemisiaefolia var. elatior(32 islands) and Rumex acetosella (31 islands) was the widest, and there were distinct distribution differences according to species. In the island area, the physical environment is poor compared to the mainland, and the native space is limited. Therefore, when invasive alien species enter and settle on the island, the native island plants can be damaged more than those on the mainland. In this regard, the discussion of the distribution of invasive alien plants in the island region can contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in the region.

The extremely isolated uninhabited island at the end of the West Sea in South Korea called "The Gyeokryeolbi Yeoldo" has recently begun to be managed by the government under the influence of public opinion demanding the island to be strictly protected. The island was created 70 million years ago by volcanic activities. So it is older than the birth history of Jeju Island, which is estimated to have been born about a million years ago. This study has focused on providing the basis for imagetelling and storytelling of the Gyeokryeolbi Yeoldo, known for its important value by exploring the cultural resources of the island. For the research, the ethnography including in-depth local interview and on-site investigation have been applied for 3 years from February 2018 to December 2020 in Taean, Chungnam Province, where the island is located. To analyze the cultural resources of this island, the resource classification model has been designed and used, which is modified from Valentine (2001) and Chi-ho Nam (2007). As a result, the "tangible cultural resources (TCR)" including various remains found on the island were mainly symbols of cultural bridge in the history of Korea-China exchange, and the spiritual land of life-saving. Also "intangible cultural resources (ICR)" extracted from the island were focused on the images of life protection, safety, bravery, and romance. Based on this study, the core concept of identity to be applied when refurbishing the island with a prominent cultural placeness( "sense of place") can be proposed as "a cultural ecological island centered on the Circular Yellow Sea that ruminates memories of love."

This study was carried out to investigate the flora of uninhabited Island in the Deokjeok Archipelago. The vascular plants which were collected in 5 times (from Jun. 2009 to Apr. 2010) were identified as 350 taxa in total, including 89 families, 231 genera, 309 species, 5 subspecies, 31 varieties, and 5 forms. There were many useful plants such as 2 taxa of Korean endemics and 2 taxa of rare plants which were proposed by the Korea Forest Service. The specially determined plants which were categorized as 5 degrees in all by the Ministry of Environment appeared as 49 taxa; Degree V was one taxon; Senecio nemorensis and IV was one taxon; Apocynum lancifolium and III was 2 taxa; Stauntonia hexaphylla, Hylotelephium spectabile and I was 45 taxa; Machilus thunbergii, Neolitsea sericea, Hedera rhombea, etc. Based on the plants which were approval objects when transfer overseas were 5 taxa, and 21 taxa of evergreen plants were recorded in the investigated area. The naturalized plants were identified as 15 taxa, and their naturalization ratio were found to be 4.2% respectively.
The intertidal benthic macroalgal floras of 19 uninhabited islands were investigated in the Goheung area, South Sea, Korea, in June 2008. Seaweed community structures on the rocky shores of four (Naemaemuldo, Ceoldo, Araedombaeseom, and Jinjioedo) of the 19 islands were also examined. Eighty macroalgal species were identified, including 13 green, 19 brown, and 48 red algae. The maximum number of species was found at Naemaemuldo, with 35 species, and the minimum was at Aredombaeseom, with 21 species. Seaweed biomass ranged from 21.39-76.22 g dry wt/$m^2$, with a maximum at Naemaemuldo, and minimum at Jinjioedo. Sargassum thunbergii was a representative species, distributed widely in the intertidal zone of the four islands. Subdominant seaweeds were Corallina pilulifera and Ulva pertusa at Naemaemuldo and Jinjioedo, respectively. Also, Ishige okamurae was dominant at Ceoldo and Araedombaeseom. Six functional seaweed forms were found at each study site, except for Araedombaeseom, which had four functional groups. On the rocky shores of the four sites, a coarsely-branched form was the most dominant functional group ranging from 44.44-61.90% in species number and 72.42-91. 09% in biomass. In conclusion, among the four study sites, the shore of Naemaemuldo Island had the best ecological status, with the highest number of species, and greatest biomass (mainly brown and red algae) and functional form diversity of seaweeds. Furthermore, on the rocky shore of Naemaemuldo, coarsely branched- and joint calcareous-form seaweeds, which grow in clean and undisturbed environmental conditions, were the representative functional forms.
Brown rats (Rattus norvegicusBerkenhout, 1769) were eradicated from Sasudo Island (33°55'13.04" N, 126°38'19.98" E), an uninhabited island designated as Natural Monument No. 333 and the largest breeding site for the streaked shearwater (Calonectris leucomelasTemminck, 1835) in South Korea. Twelve eradication studies were conducted from November 2015 to February 2021. The survey was conducted using a line census method that entailed slow wandering throughout the island and identifying starting and returning points. Capture traps were installed around traces of Rattus norvegicus, such as excrement and identified holes. As a result, 2 to 6 individuals were captured at each instance, except for the last time, when no individuals were captured. It is hypothesized that brown rats arrived at Sasudo Island via vessels arriving at the island for leisure and fishing. After the damage to streaked shearwater caused by brown rats was confirmed in 2006, entry to Sasudo Island was strictly prohibited through security measures, and marine clean-up programs that began in 2013 and continuous capturing since 2015 have been successful in eradicating brown rats. To maintain and manage the condition in Sasudo Island, preservation and management measures, such as strict visitor control, are necessary to prevent the inflow of new brown rats in the future.

The objective of study was to protect seabird breeding site and vegetation restoration of Chilbal and Sokugul island in Shinan county Jeonnam province, April and December 2011. We analyzed the soil properties according to the dominant communities and environmental gradient. As a result, It was highly analyzed to moisture content, organic matter, salinity, total nitrogen in Commelina communis community and low analyzed in Achyranthes japonica community. Carex boottiana community which mainly used as a seabird habitat has a wide range and Achyranthes japonica and Artemisia princeps community was narrowed to soil properties. Soil pH of Carex boottiana community in Sogugul island was the lowest on 3.14 and Peucedanum japonicum community was the highest. Soil moisture content and organic matter was analyzed by the high value in Peucedanum japonicum community. In contrast, Achyranthes japonica was the low value and Carex boottiana community was analyzed the highest on the salinity and total nitrogen. On the soil environmental characteristics according to the environmental gradient, The higher altitude, moisture content, organic matter, salinity and total nitrogen was the lower in Chilbal island. In the case of Sokugul island, the altitude difference did not show the characteristics of soil environmental factors for small area and low altitude. But moisture content is similar to soil property of Chilbal island. Soil property was strongly acid soil because of seabird dropping. This results will be helpful to manage the invasive plants.
To elucidate the distribution of broad-leaved evergreen plants of the central part of the Yellow Sea, we surveyed 136 islands of Incheon from May 2006 to March 2008. In the present survey, twelve broad-leaved evergreen species were found on 77 islands, which included 28 inhabited and 49 uninhabited islands. Among them, the most popular plants were the following: Euonymus japonicus Thunb., Elaeagnus macrophylla Thunb., Camellia japonica L., and Cyrtomium falcatum (L.f.) C. Presl. These plants were found growing on Baengnyeong Island, the northmost island among those surveyed, near $N 37^{\circ}60^{\prime}$. On the other hand the following four species are found up to Deokjeok-myeon only, near N $N 37^{\circ}10^{\prime}$: Hedera rhombea (Miq.) Bean,, Quercus acuta Thunb. ex Murray for. acuta, Neolitsea sericea (Blume) Koidz., and Trachelospermum asiaticum (Siebold & Zucc.) Nakai. However, these plants are usually found growing in the southern or southwestern coastal region of the Korean Peninsula. Thus the distribution of the broad-leaved evergreen plants growing on these high latitude islands might be influenced by a warm current of the Yellow Sea. The distribution of broad-leaved evergreen plants on each island is described.

The countries are trying to expand the sea limit such as the territorial sea, fishing zone or the exclusive economic zone as far as the Law of the Sea permit to do for the benefit of their national interest. Especially, they are eager to claim the base point where it locates far from the coastline even if it is uninhabited island or reef under the sea. The baseline has been claimed to maximize the territorial sea. Another way to expand the sea limit is to lower the vertical datum to change the land limit. China claimed Dongdo which is located about 79 miles far from the coast as the base point. Japan also claimed many uninhabited island or the reef which is located very far from the coast such as Okino Dorishima. As Korea is the party who negotiate the maritime limit with Japan and China, we should be keen and sensitive on the issues claimed by neighboring countries in terms of base point and the baseline. This paper is to review the characteristics of the base points or baselines of neighboring countries and to suggest the views how to maintain and to relocate our base points. As western coast of Korean peninsula is one of the largest tide fluctuation zone in the world, with long tidal record to prove the vertical datum adjustment, Korea can find the way to lower the vertical datum especially in Yellow Sea. So, major and critical tidal station has to be set up along the western coast to verify tide fluctuation record which can be met with international standard.

For basic information collection for the ecological management of forest vegetation in Korean island areas, forest vegetation between inhabited(Daemodo) and uninhabited(Gudo) island was classified in the Z-M phytosociological method and their ecological characteristics in terms of both floristic composition and structure analyzed. Forest vegetation of Daemodo and Gudo were divided into a total of 11 units and 8 units, respectively. Total cover and species diversity index(H') of forest vegetation showed significant differences between the two island, Daemodo has a high value in the tree layer, but, Gudo has a high value in the shrub layer. Composition of Life forms, Daemodo was N-$R_5-D_2$-e and Gudo MM-$R_5-D_2$-e. Family importance value(FIV), Daemdo has a high value in Theaceae(12.2) and Pinaceae(12.0) and Gudo in Lauraceae(16.5) and Fagaceae (11.6). The percentage of the total number of species in the family level, Daemodo is Asteraceae(4.5%) was the highest and Gudo is Liliaceae(7.3%). Indicator species of forest vegetation of the two islands, Daemodo is Nanophanerophytes(N) including Smilax china, Ligustrum japonicum and Eurya japonica was significant inicator species and Gudo is Megaphanerophytes(MM) including Dendropanax morbiferus, Castanopsis sieboldii and Actinodaphne lancifolia.
