  • This study deals with displacement analysis of anisotropic folded structures with triangular elements and quadrilateral elements. When folded plates are analyzed, triangular elements as well as quadrilateral elements are needed for conveniences of modelling. However, using triangular elements is not a simple problem. A simple formulation is presented which allows a quadrilateral element to degenerate into a triangular element. Therefore it can easily be used for computational simplicity and avoided complexities on mixed use of triangular element and quadrilateral element. In this paper, a high-order shear deformation theory using only Lagrangian interpolation functions and drilling degrees of freedom for folded plates are utilized for more accurate analysis. Especially, various results of anisotropic laminated and folded composite structures with triangular element and quadrilateral element show the structural behavior characteristics of them.

  • The particle system based on quad mesh has been posed to model cloth. But we need to develop cloth models on triangular meshes because they are widely used. Cloth modeling on triangular mesh is often done in the style of finite element method, which assumes that material is continuous. To preserve the advantages of particle system, e.g. model simplicity and the ease of implementation, even on triangular mesh, this paper proposes a particle system on triangular mesh. The motion of cloth is modeled so that vertices interact with each other via the edges on the triangular mesh. The interactions of vertices are assumed to exist between every adjacent vertex and between every other vertex. The deformation energy due to interaction is constructed based on the theory of elasticity. The contribution of the paper is to implement the advantages of particle system on triangular mesh.

  • We derived the resolution of the modified triangular interferometer and described the analysis about distance measurement using the one. Also, to demonstrate the feasibility of distance measurement using the modified triangular interferometer, the incoherent hologram of a two-point source with depth and its numerical reconstruction were presented.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for the triangular mesh intersection problem. The key aspect of the proposed algorithm is to reduce the number of triangle pairs to be checked for intersection. To this end, it employs two different approaches, the Y-group approach and the space partitioning approach. Even though both approaches have the same objective of reducing the number of triangular-triangular intersection (TTI) pairs, their inherent characteristics are quite different. While the V-group approach works by topology (reduces TTI pairs by guaranteeing no intersection among adjacent triangles), the space partitioning approach works by geometry (reduces TTI pairs by guaranteeing no intersection among distant triangles). The complementary nature of the two approaches brings substantial improvement in reducing the number TTI pairs.

  • A high precision shear deformable triangular element has been proposed for bending analysis of triangular plate. The element has twelve nodes at the three sides and four nodes inside the element. Initially the element has thirty-five degrees of freedom, which has been reduced to thirty by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the internal nodes through static condensation. Plates having different boundary conditions, side ratios (b/a) and thickness ratios (h/a = 0.001, 0.1 and 0.2) have been analyzed using the proposed shear locking free element. Concentrated and uniformly distributed transverse loads have been used for the analysis. The formulation is made based on first order shear deformation theory. For validation of the present element and formulation few results of thin triangular plate have been compared with the analytical solutions. Results for thick plate have been presented as new results.

  • In this paper, we present a method of extracting a regular 2-manifold triangular net from a triangular net including degenerate and self-intersected triangles. This method can be applied to obtaining an offset model without degenerate and self-intersected triangles. Then this offset model can be used to generate CL curves and extract machining features for CAPP The robust and efficient algorithm to detect valid triangles by growing regions from an initial valid triangle is presented. The main advantage of the algorithm is that detection of valid triangles is performed only in valid regions and their adjacent selfintersections, and omitted in the rest regions (invalid regions). This advantage increases robustness of the algorithm. As well as a k-d tree bucketing method is used to detect self-intersections efficiently.

  • A novel triangular-shaped plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) Bragg grating waveguide is introduced, whose band-gap is narrower than that of the conventional step type and wider than that of the sawtoothshaped one. Moreover apodized triangular-shaped MIM Bragg grating structures are proposed in order to reduce the side lobes of the transmission spectrum, because the Bragg reflector with a sawtooth profile has a smoother transmission spectrum than that of a triangular-shaped one. The performance of the proposed structures is simulated by using the finite difference time domain method.

  • Solving partial differential equations (PDEs) on a manifold setting is frequently faced problem in CAD, CAM and CAE. However, unlikely to a regular grid, solutions for those problems on a triangular mesh are not available in general, as there are no well-established intrinsic differential operators. Considering that a triangular mesh is a powerful tool for representing a highly-complicated geometry, this problem must be tackled for improving the capabilities of many geometry processing algorithms. In this paper, we introduce mathematically well-defined differential operators on a triangular mesh setup, and show some examples of their applications. Through this, it is expected that many CAD/CAM/CAE application will be benefited, as it provides a mathematically rigorous solution for a PDE problem which was not available before.

  • Triangular mesh models are widely used in reverse engineering, computer graphics, rapid prototyping and NC(numerical controller) tool-path generation. Triangular mesh models are generated from point clouds, surface models and solid models. A halfedge-based triangular mesh data structure is proposed and the development considerations are presented. In the presented data structure, halfedge is the key data structure. Halfedge stores its triangle index and the order in the triangle. Triangles do not store the halfedge lists explicitly. Halfedge is referred by value and defined when it is required. Proposed data structure supports four design requirements: efficient rendering, compact memory, supporting efficient algorithms and easy programming.

  • Numerical and experimental studies were performed to examine the characteristics of heat and mass transfer processes for a Micro Heat Pipe(MHP) with a triangular cross-section. Solutions on mass flow rate, pressure variation, and radius of meniscus were obtained using the mathematical model developed by Faghri and Khrustalev. To obtain an increase in capillary limitation, a triangular tube with curved walls was designed and fabricated. The measurement by microscope showed that the radius at corners of the tube was ranging between 0.03-0.05mm. Performance test for MHPs using the triangular tube with curved walls proved a substantial increasement in heat transport limitation, with 4.5W and 2.0W in case of using water and ethanol as a working fluid, respectively. In the previous study by Faghri a limitation of 0.5W was reported for a water MHP with a regular triangular tube.
