  • The study attempted to articulate standpoints towards compulsory education system based on schooling age and year in careful considerations with the gifted. For these ends, literatures were reviewed and various education laws, regulations and documents and related law reports and judicial decisions were investigated. Literature review was conducted to develop that ideas of rights to compulsory education for regular students are closely related to those for gifted. Structures of general education laws and gifted education law and regulations were compared. Later, limitations of compulsory education were discussed when it was applied for the gifted. In conclusions, it is inappropriate that the gifted are ruled by compulsory education system based on schooling age. If compulsory education system is designated to provide an effective opportunity for all students, it should be duties and rights to enter elementary schools at schooling age. However, it appeared that the duties and rights to enter elementary schools at certain schooling ages function as inhibitors against the gifted with giftedness and potentials far beyond those of regular students. Therefore, the gifted should be separately ruled under flexible systems of compulsory education if their achievement level is assessed as sufficient to enter elementary schools before schooling age. On the other hand, legal systems of compulsory education are gradually evolved to flexible systems. However, it is necessary to establish social atmosphere and support system of educational administration in order to practice the flexible system of compulsory education for the gifted.

  • This study aims to analyze a selective examination for the gifted and talented from a domain-general and special standpoint. For this, we analyzed gifted and talented test results carried out by Gifted and Talented Education institute affiliated with the university of Education located in the central region of South Korea. This test consisted of three sections which are giftedness in the first round, academic aptitude in the second round and interview in the last round. I conducted the analysis of variance of the giftedness test result to the gifted and talented group in each subject from the domain-general point of view. As a result, the each group was not significant. This means that the gifted and talented in each subject has giftedness from the domain-general viewpoint. Secondly, I implemented the analysis of correlation among three test such as giftedness, academic aptitude and interview conducted during the selective process for the gifted and talented. The result was that they had a low or no correlations between them and were not significant. This demonstrated that each test checked a different area. That is, we came to realize that the first, second and third test evaluates a different area and in particular, with the result that the first and second test had a low or no correlations between both of them we realized that they evaluated a different area from a domain-special standpoint. The purpose of this study is meaningful to investigate in terms of how the selective test for the gifted and talented is conducted from a domain-general and special standpoint as a recent study viewpoint about the gifted and talented along with creativity. It is too limited to generalize this result because this test was sampled by one region but, this study indicates that we should take a domain-general and special standpoint into account when it comes to selection for the gifted and talented.

  • The current curriculums for the gifted and talented students in informatics are not practical and systematic in teaching methods because it is hard to provide the gifted and talented students with appropriate education individualized at their own levels. Furthermore, there are still some problems in previous curriculums for the gifted and talented students in informatics as follows. First, there are not sufficient on previous curriculums for the gifted and talented education in informatics in middle and high schools. Second, previous curriculums in use do not contribute to cultivating the creativity, problem-solving, logical thinking abilities and insight for the gifted students. Third, there is no curriculum, which reflects on individual's ability and aptitude, for the gifted and talented education in informatics. Therefore, in this paper, we suggest stepwise enrichment curriculums that enables the gifted and talented students to be equipped with creative problem-solving skills and computational thinking abilities. In this regard, at first, The problem with existing research and educational institutes for the gifted and talented in informatics were analyzed.
