  • Zirconia coatings are performed by the plasma spraying on the substrate of Al-Si alloy. In case of plasma sprayed ceramic coatings, it is important to control properly residual stress occurred during cooling process. Residual stress in coating layer varies with sprayed conditions and is influenced greatly by the coating layer thickness. Surface residual stress due to coating layer thickness is measured by X-ray diffraction method and the residual stress in coating layer is estimated by the deflection of coating layer when the restraint force in substrate was removed. When zirconia was coated on the substrate, tensile residual stress remains on zirconia coated surface layer. The tensile stress is increased to 0.35mm thickness and after 0.45mm thickness it is decreased abrouptly. A thick bond and composite coating reduce the zirconia surface stress and composite coating controls effectively the thick zirconia surface stress.

  • In the present study, $TiB_2-Co$ composite coatings were thermally sprayed onto the surface of a 304 stainless steel substrate using an atmospheric plasma spray (APS). The phase analysis of the powders and plasma-sprayed coatings was performed using X-ray diffractometry analysis. The microstructures of the coatings were studied by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The average particle size and flowability of the feedstocks were also measured. Both $TiB_2-32Co$ and $TiB_2-45Co$ (wt.%) coatings possessed typical dense lamellar structures and high-quality adhesion to the substrate. The oxidation behaviors of the coatings were studied at $900^{\circ}C$ in an atmospheric environment. In addition, the cross-sectional images of the oxidized coatings were analyzed by SEM. A thin and well-adhered layer was formed on the surface of both $TiB_2-Co$ coatings, confirming satisfactory high-temperature oxidation resistance. The kinetic curves corresponding to the isothermal oxidation of the coatings illustrated a short transient stage from rapid to slow oxidation during the early portion of the oxidation experiment.

  • In this work the tribological characteristics were compared between ZnO coatings on glass substrate prepared by sputtering and sol-gel methods. In order to assess the effects of processing method on the tribological characteristics, the friction and wear properties of the coatings were measured by using a reciprocating type of micro-tribotester. The sputtered ZnO coatings were prepared on a glass substrate at room temperature, $150^{\circ}$, and $300^{\circ}$. The ZnO coatings prepared by sol-gel method were heat-treated in air atmosphere at $550^{\circ}$ for one hour. The crystal structure and surface morphology of the coatings were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), respectively. The experimental results showed that overall the sputtered coatings exhibited better friction and wear properties than coatings prepared by sol-gel method. The sputtered coating grown at room temperature had a relatively low friction coefficient of 0.14 and superior wear resistance compared with the other coatings. Nevertheless, sol-gel method of coating ZnO on glass is beneficial for economical coating of a large surface area.

  • Ni $TiO_2$ nano composite coatings were fabricated by using pulse current electrodeposition technique at 100 Hz pulse frequency with a constant 50% pulse duty cycles and reference was taken with respect to the direct current electrodeposition. The properties of the composite coatings were investigated by using SEM, XRD, Wear test and Vicker's microhardness test. XRD patterns of pulse deposited composite coatings were found to be changed from preferred (100) orientation to the random mixed orientations. The results demonstrated that the Vickers microhardness of composite coatings under pulse condition was significantly improved than that of pure nickel coating as well as direct current electrodeposited Ni-$TiO_2$ composite coatings. Wear tracks have shown the less plastic deformation at pulse condition with reduced coefficient of friction. Nickel matrix grain size was also found to be lower in pulse plated composite coatings as compared to direct current electrodeposited composite coatings.

  • Environmental friendly UV-curable coatings, having excellent hardness, gloss, mar and chemical resistance, are commonly used for the wooden flooring coatings. Especially epoxy acrylate oligomers are chosen for the wooden flooring coatings, due to their thermal stability and fast curing. In this study, we investigated the effect of the acrylate functionality on the thermal stability and surface hardness. The thermal degradations of monomers, oligomer, photoinitiator and formulated coatings with different acrylate functionality were measured using a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). And the surface hardness was also measured with a pendulum hardness tester to compare relationship between the thermal stability and the physical property. The cured coatings became thermally stable by crosslinking during UV-curing. Both the thermal stability and surface hardness of cured coatings were improved with increasing acrylate functionality.

  • Superhard TiN coatings were fabricated by DC and ICP (inductively coupled plasma) assisted magnetron sputtering techniques. The effect of ICP power, ranging from 0 to 300 W, on coating microstructure, preferred orientation mechanical properties were systematically investigated with HR-XRD, SEM, AFM and nanoindentation. The results show that ICP power has a significant influence on coating microstructure and mechanical properties of TiN coatings. With the increasing of ICP power, coating microstructure evolves from the columnar structure of DC process to a highly dense one. Grain sizes of TiN coatings were decreased from 12.6 nm to 8.7 nm with increase of ICP power. The maximum nanohardness of 67.6 GPa was obtained for the coatings deposited at ICP power of 300 W. Preferred orientation in TiN coatings also vary with ICP power, exerting an effective influence on film nanohardness.

  • Nanocrystalline vanadium nitride (VN) coatings were deposited using asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering to further understand the influence of the pulsed plasmas on the crystal structure, microstructure and mechanical properties. Properties of VN coatings were investigated with FE-SEM, XRD and nanoindentation. The results show that, with the increasing pulse frequency and decreasing duty cycle, the coating morphology changed from a porous columnar to a dense structure, with finer grains. Asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtered VN coatings showed higher hardness, elastic modulus and residual compressive stress than dc sputtered VN coatings. The results suggest that asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering technique is very beneficial for the reactive sputtering deposition of VN coatings.

  • Epoxy coatings cured by different amine based curing agents have been prepared. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to monitor the surface topology changes of epoxy coatings before and after hygrothermal cyclic test. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the epoxy coating were measured by Thermo-mechanical Analysis (TMA). The Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with hygrothermal cyclic test has been introduced to evaluate the corrosion protection of the epoxy coatings. In conclusion, thermal properties of epoxy coatings were in good agreement with the results of corrosion protection of epoxy coated carbon steel obtained result by EIS with hygrothermal cyclic test. The relationship between thermal properties, surface roughness changes and corrosion protection of epoxy coatings are discussed in this study.

  • Although DLC coatings have good tribological properties, these are dependent on the deposition method, property of contact surface, and test condition. Si-DLC/DLC coatings with various Si content were deposited on Si substrates and tested using a reciprocating friction tester against steel balls. The results revealed that the tribological behavior of Si-DLC/DLC coatings was dependent on the Si content. The formation of transfer film and wear particles on the contact surface was greatly influenced by the Si content in DLC coatings. In particular, silicon oxide transfer film formed by tribochemical reaction contributed to reduce wear and friction.

  • Nanocrystalline MoN coatings were prepared by inductively coupled plasma magnetron sputtering (ICPMS) changing the plasma power from 0 W to 200 W. The properties of the coatings were analyzed by x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, nanoindentation tester and semiconductor characterization system. As the ICP power increases, the crystal structure of the MoN coatings changed from a mixed phase of γ-Mo2N and α-Mo to a single phase γ-Mo2N. MoN coatings deposited by ICPMS at 200 W showed the most compact microstructure with the highest nanoindentation hardness of 27.1 GPa. The electrical resistivity of the coatings decreased from 691.6 μΩ cm to 325.9 μΩ cm as the ICP power increased.
