Sibling Recognition and Nepotism in the Subsocial Funnel Web Spider, Coelotes terrestris (Araneae, Amaurobiidae)

  • Cooperative or non-territorial permanently social spiders are believed to have evolved from species showing subsocial maternal care. The transition from subsocial to cooperative social groups probably involved a transition from an outbreeding breeding system to one with inbreeding. Nepotistic recognition among siblings should facilitate the evolution of social cooperation through avoidance of inbreeding and maintenance of mutual tolerance between siblings. We conducted experiments to determine whether a mechanism for sibling recognition is present in the subsocial spider, Coelotes terrestris which displays extended maternal care in the form of food provisioning. The numbers of surviving individuals within unfed groups were observed and compared between non-sibling groups of ten spiderlings and groups of ten siblings. The number of survivors differed significantly between groups, with consistently fewer spiderlings surviving in the non-sibling groups than the sibling groups over the study period. This result suggests that sibling recognition and nepotism do occur in this subsocial species. The nepotism involved in the maternal social organization of the Coelotes might be an example of a preadaptation facilitating the evolution of permanent social life.

  • In this media convergence era when the 'hybrid' genres increase, it has been important to explore distinguishing genre-specific effects of contents use. This study revealed that news, current affairs/talk, and documentary genres respectively produces opposite directions of influences on values; likewise, drama and reality genres also respectively produces differentiated impact on values and social trust. Drama viewing itself shows contrary patterns on civic attitude, i. e., positive relationship with social trust while negative with tolerance.

  • This study examined the impact of failure tolerance on exploration and exploitation activities and the impact of these activities on management performance in the representatives of re-start-up companies. Recently, policy and social support for re-starting businesses has been increasing. This study seeks to verify whether the psychological factors of the re-founder are related to management performance. Therefore, a research model that combines failure tolerance, which is a psychological and pedagogical variable, and management performance, which is a management variable, was presented and empirical analysis was made. The research targets were conducted on re-founders who received funding from Korea SMEs & Startups Agency. The analysis of the psychological characteristics of the re-start-up, failure tolerance and the effect on the exploration and exploitation activity, all showed positive effects, and the analysis of the effect of the exploration and exploitation activity on the management performance, showed that the exploration activity did not affect, and the exploitation activity had a positive effect. This study is intended to provide theoretical and practical implications.

The Effects of Academic Stress and Academic Failure Tolerance on Academic Burnout Among College Students : Moderated Mediation Effects of Interpersonal Stress (대학생들의 학업스트레스와 학업실패내성이 학업소진에 미치는 영향: 대인관계스트레스의 조절된 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of academic stress on academic burnout, the role of academic failure tolerance, and interpersonal stress among college students. The data were collected from 345 undergraduate students from a university in Seoul and were analyzed with a regression analysis and bootstrapping. The results found that first, academic stress affected academic burnout; the more academic stress, the more burnout students experienced. Second, academic stress caused a decreased academic failure tolerance, which then resulted in academic burnout. Third, the mediating effect of the academic failure tolerance on the academic stress and academic burnout was controlled by an interpersonal stress. The present study has significant implications for investigating how the students' personal and social aspects of stress affect academic burnout and suggests appropriate intervention methods.

Effects of Children's Emotional Regulation and Maternal Parenting Behaviors on Gender-Specific Children's Social Competence (아동의 정서 조절 능력과 지각된 어머니의 양육 행동이 남아와 여아의 사회적 유능성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purposes of this study were to explore the gender differences in children's social competence, emotional regulation and maternal parenting behaviors, and to investigate differences between boys and girls in the interrelationships between these kinds of variables. The participants were 214 children in 4 to 6 grades and their teachers from one elementary school in Seoul. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson's correlations, and multiple regressions. The results were as follows: There were statistically significant gender differences in the children's social competence, emotional regulation and maternal parenting behaviors. Children's negative emotion explained boys' and girls' peer social skills, frustration tolerance, and task orientation. Children's positive emotion regulation explained boys' and girls' peer social skills, assertive social skills, and task orientation. Boys, who perceived less maternal supervision, displayed less assertive social skills and task orientation.

  • The purposes of this study were to explore the differences in maternal parenting behaviors, parents' conflict, social support, and social competence according to boys' and girls' depression level. The participants of this study were 150 children of 4 to 6 grades and their teachers from one elementary school in Seoul. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test. The result were as follows: Firstly, depressive boys perceived less maternal warmth and more parents' conflict than non-depression group. And boys of depression group had less task orientation than non-depression group. Secondly, depressive girls perceived less maternal warmth, supervision, and parents' support, and more parents' conflict than non-depression group. And girls of depression group were rated having less peer social skills, frustration tolerance than non-depression group by teachers.

Research on Asocial Behavior by Types of Internet Addiction in Elementary School Students (인터넷 중독에 따른 초등학생의 비사회 행동 연구)

  • An internet addiction measure(Park et al., 2001) and an asocial behavior measure(K. J. Lee, 1997) were administered to 232 6th-grade students. Statistical analyses were by mean-difference scores and t-test. Results showed that all aspects of internet addiction(preoccupation, compulsive use, relapse, tolerance/dependence and impediments in daily life) were related to both the inner asocial behaviors of depression, social withdrawal and over-anxiety and the external asocial behaviors of aggressiveness, delinquency and hyperactivity. The only exception was that tolerance/dependence was not related to delinquency. Boys addicted to the internet were more socially withdrawn, aggressive, delinquent and hyperactive than girls. From the results, it can be suggested that internet education should be carried out from the elementary educational level.

Children's Bullying, Victimization and Teacher's Reports of Problem Behaviors and Competencies (아동의 또래 괴롭힘 가해 및 피해경험과 교사보고에 따른 문제행동과 유능성 : 학년과 성별 비교)

  • Data were collected from teacher reports and from 529 1st to 6th grade students through questionnaires. Bullying was higher among boys than girls. Victimization was higher in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th grade boys than girls. Acting out was highest in 2nd graders and lowest in 3rd graders. Shy-anxiousness was highest in 4th and 6th graders and lowest in 1st and 3rd graders. Learning problems were lowest among 3rd graders. Competencies were higher in 1st and 2nd grades. Boys had more problem behaviors; girls showed better competencies. Bullying was positively related to acting out, and negatively related to frustration tolerance and task orientation. Victimization was positively related to shy-anxiousness and learning problems, and negatively related to frustration tolerance, assertive social skills and task orientation.

  • As the interest in the positive quality of life is increasing throughout the world, the number of people who are suffering from negative sentiments, such as depression, anxiety, or stress, is increasing, as well. Especially, the adolescence period is the period of transition from childhood to adulthood and accompanies significant changes in terms of the body and mind alike. The purpose of this study is to examine the negative sentiment of the juveniles, caused by the stress they experience in their social and personal domains and the distress tolerance that can protect the inner feelings of them at the same time, to understand how they are related to the subjective well-being of the juveniles. For this study, the researcher employed the data from 362 high school students from the high schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi area, which were analyzed using the statistics suites SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 22.0. According to the findings of this study, first, the depression and anxiety of the adolescent population showed a significant relationship for each variable with regard to the distress tolerance and the subjective well-being. Especially, the negative correlation with the subjective well-being was highly significant. Second, the depression and anxiety of the juveniles turned out to influence the distress tolerance and subjective well-being of them in a negative manner. In both distress tolerance and subjective well-being, the influence of anxiety was higher than that of depression. Third, in the relationship between depression, anxiety, and subjective well-being, the distress tolerance turned out to have a mediating effect. Such results of this study provided the basic data for suggesting the strategies to promote the perceived psychological well-being and help the juveniles who are under stress.

The Influence of Female University Students' Perception of Dating Violence on Dating Violence Victim Behavior: Mediating effect of Violence Tolerance (여대생의 데이트 폭력 인식이 데이트 폭력 피해자 행동에 미치는 영향; 폭력허용도의 매개 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the mediating effect of female university students' perception of dating violence on the dating violence victims behavior. A questionnaire was distributed and collected to a total of 161 female students enrolled in four departments of U University. Frequency and percentage, correlation analysis, simple regression analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were performed, and the Sobel test was performed to verify the significance of the indirect effects. Findings First, it was found that female university students' perception of dating violence had a negative effect on the behavior of victims of dating violence, and the explanation power was 5%. Second, violence tolerance was found to have a positive effect on the behavior of all dating violence victims, and the explanatory power was 12%. Third, in the first stage, female university students' perception of dating violence significantly explained the tolerance of violence. In step 2, perception of dating violence significantly explained the behavior of dating violence victims, and in step 3, the tolerance of violence explained the behavior of victims of dating violence. When violence tolerance was introduced in step 4, the influence of dating violence perception on the victimization behavior of dating violence decreased, but it was not significant. That is, violence tolerance showed a partial mediating effect in the effect of dating violence perception on dating violence victim behavior. It is necessary to develop and implement practical programs that can raise perception of violence and lower the tolerance for violence to prevent victims of dating violence.
