  • Most middle school and high school students learns under the same study plans and educational courses. Such an equal level education policies prevent the science-gifted from developing and promoting their ability. So it is severely necessary to sort out the gifted in science and make them develop their ability. In this paper, the attitudes of teachers and parents toward the science-gifted student in middle school were investigated as well as the characteristics of the gifted. One hundred science teachers of middle school who recommended the gifted in science and their parents in Seoul area were questionnaired. The follows are the consequences of investigation. 1. Most teachers and parents of the gifted considered that the school should do a special care for the gifted in science. That is, they prefer the enrichment course to the acceleration course for it. 2. The teachers play the role of motivating the study and promotion very well, but do not well as either the advisor or the cooperator with the parents because of their excessive work and lack of professional knowledgement about education of the gifted. 3. The parents play the role of the advisor or the counselor well, but do not well as the cooperator with school. 4. Among the characteristics of the gifted, there are not any differences between boys and girls in conduct characteristics. But there are meaningful difference in emotion characteristics. 5. The education of the gifted is very important for developing of country and personal promotion. So the administrative and financial support are necessary in order to sort out the gifted in science earlier and provide various programs.

  • As a case study on beginning teachers' teaching professionalism in science-gifted education, we analyzed their teaching professionalism based on pedagogical content knowledge. To do this, we selected 3 elementary and 3 secondary beginning teachers from science-gifted education institutes in the metropolitan area. After their science instructions for science-gifted students were observed, in-depth interviews were conducted. Analyses were conducted with taped videos, researcher's field notes, and transcripts for in-depth interviews. This study revealed that most of the teachers had relatively desirable belief about science-gifted education. However, they tended to have a little deficient practical knowledge about science-gifted students, the curriculum for science-gifted education, science contents, the instructional strategies for science-gifted education, and the assessment in science-gifted education. These results imply that many teachers are likely to have a little deficiency in teaching professionalism for science-gifted students in various aspects, and need to find the ways of improving their teaching professionalism.

  • In this study, it was compared how different the adjustment, self-perception, social support and stress between science-gifted children and general children, and the difference between gifted boys and girls. And it was identified what are the effects on stress of science-gifted children. The subjects were 89 science-gifted children of the first grade in Middle School at JeonJu. Science-gifted students in this study were identified through the teacher nomination and CNU(ChonbukNational University) Science & Math Tests. We used the standard object as the comparative group (general children). The results of this study were as follow; First, all personal-adjustment and social-adjustment domains, self-perception and teacher support of science-gifted children were significantly higher than those of general children. All disadjustment domains, parent support and friend support of science-gifted children were significantly lower than those of general children. Second, the self-planning, prejudice, social competence, behavioral conduct, global self worth, parent support, teacher support and classmate support of the science-gifted children had the significant difference according to the gender. Third, the motive of accomplishment, self-planning, attachment and social-affirmation of the science-gifted children correlated negatively with their stress. Fourth, the social competence, athletic competence, physical appearance, behavioral conduct, global self worth and social support of the science-gifted children correlated negatively with their stress. The global self worth of the science-gifted children had the significant difference according to the variables such as teacher support, close friend support, parent support and classmate support in the other of name. The most influential factor was teacher support. The stress of the science-gifted children had the significant difference according to the variables such as parent support, close friend support and global self worth in the other of name. The most influential factor was parent support.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the difference of semantic network about sedimentary environment between science gifted students and non-gifted students through field trip. The fifteen high school science gifted students and non-gifted students were participated in the field trip for this study. The geological field trip was performed in Chaseokgang, which suitable learning place for sedimentary environments. Data included field trip observation and students' inquiry activity reports. The inquiry activity reports were analyzed using the semantic network analysis method. The results of this study were as follows: First, the semantic network of science gifted students was larger and complex structures than that of the non-gifted students. Second, science gifted students were interpreted that changes of sedimentary environment was connected with the sorting and the roundness. On the other hand, semantic network of non-gifted students were become fragmented because they were not interpreted sedimentary environment related to scientific concepts.

The subjects were 45 teachers of science-gifted and 45 teachers of general students. The major results of this study were as follows: First, there was no differences on the science philosophical views between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students by chi-square tests (p<.05). Second, there were no differences on how task assignments, how to guide exploration data, and how to write reports between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students (p<.05). But there was meaningful differences on how to proceed with exploration activities between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students (p<.05). It is implied that this the results of this investigation will help the focus of future efforts to promote more adequate the science philosophical views and instruction strategies for open-inquiry in teachers of science-gifted.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a test of a creative problem solving (CPS) for the selection of gifted science students in elementary school. For this, the methods and procedures of the selection of gifted science students was investigated through the internet homepages 23 gifted science education centers of universities and 16 city. province offices of education. The results of this study were as follows: Most of the gifted science students were selected through a multi-step examination process. They were selected on the basis of their records by recommendation of a principal or a classroom teacher in their school, by operation of standardized tests (ex. intelligence quotient score, achievements in science and mathematics, interest and attitude/aptitude for science as well as through other means), as well as through intensive observation of those gifted science students who are selected by interview and oral tests. The selection of gifted students was not evaluated through creativity testing; giftedness in city. province office of education. Testing of CPS was found to be especially lacking in these organizations. For the development of the test items of CPS in science, the five elements were extracted through the framework for the content analysis of the CPS: problem exploration, problem statement, solution thinking, experiment design, and assesment. In addition, suggestions were made regarding an appropriate scoring system for the test of the CPS. As the result of the developed test was applied to the 4th grade of the gifted and general student, we found that gifted students were superior to general students. In conclusion, it was that the CPS test developed in this study should be used to evaluate the CPS for the selection of gifted students.

  • This study was to gain a suggestion how to educate the science gifted student and manage the science gifted education center by analyzing the science gifted student's perception of the science, scientist and vocation. One seventy and eight science gifted students were involved in the questionnaire to investigating the perception of science, scientist and vocation. As the results, many of science gifted students thought the convenience as the positive aspect of science and the environmental pollution as the negative aspect of science. Science gifted students considered most scientists a diligent person, researcher and what's more, they are careless about home. They suggested much more of foreign scientists like Einstein, Edison, etc. than Korean ones as respectable scientists. Scientist is a major vocation that they want and know in the science area, while some students want to be a doctor, occurred to science singer. The mystery, difficulty, complexity, scientist, etc. occurred to science gifted students when they heard the ‘science’. According to the results, there are in need of the new educational programs for the science gifted students and science gifted education center. One of the aims of the science gifted education center is the judgment and cultivation of the science gifted student. Therefore, the science gifted student to be educated to improve positively the images of science and scientist.
