The purpose of this study was to make valuable suggestions for improving environmental education(EE) teaching materials. For the purpose of this study, we analyzed four secondary school EE textbooks in the perspective of environmental literacy components. The findings of this study are as follows: (1) As a whole, the EE textbooks tend to focus the understanding environmental knowledge much more than environmental activities. (2) In 'main text' domain of EE textbooks, environmental information, including environmental issue knowledge, is much more focused than environmental attitudes and behavior, including socio-political and environmental issue knowledge. (3) In 'graphic data' domain, environmental information about environmental issue knowledge was most prevalent. (4) Most learning activities focus on 'issue skill' component, rather than 'attitude' and 'action' component. (5) The objectives of EE in the 7th national Curriculum were not explicitly embedded in textbooks and too much is inclined toward 'knowledge' and 'skill'. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop 'module-type' EE textbooks to enable integrative EE. Also, it is suggested to develop specific strategies for linking environmental knowledge and attitude/behavior.
In this study, the characteristics of the reading materials in the chemistry domain of elementary school science and middle school science textbooks and chemistry I and II textbooks developed under the 2009 Revised National Science Curriculum were investigated. The criteria for classifying the reading materials were the types of theme, purpose, types of presentation, and students' activity. The inscriptions in the reading materials were also analyzed from the viewpoint of type, role, caption and index, and proximity type. The results indicated that more reading materials were included in the elementary science textbooks compared to middle school science, chemistry I, and/or chemistry II textbooks. The percentage of application in everyday life theme was high in the reading materials of elementary science textbooks, whereas the percentage of scientific knowledge theme was high in those of middle school science, chemistry I, and/or chemistry II textbooks. It was also found that the percentage of expanding concepts purpose was high in the reading materials of elementary science textbooks, whereas the percentage of supplementing concepts purpose was high in those of middle school science, chemistry I, and/or chemistry II textbooks. Several limitations in the use of inscriptions were found to exist; most inscriptions were photograph and/or illustration; most inscriptions were supplementing or elaborating texts; many inscriptions were presented without a caption or an index; there was a problem in the proximity of inscriptions to text.
The purpose of this research is to compare high school mathematics textbooks published by India with those published by Korea so that we apply merits of India's high school mathematics education to our educational problems. We first study India's educational systems, and analyze the mathematics textbooks from both countries by considering their external appearance, units, contents. Finally we give meaningful results and propose what we can do for our mathematics education based on our analysis performed in this paper.
In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the pedagogical importance of counter-examples that contradict statements about mathematics education research and the curriculum revision process for high school mathematics courses. Using a literature research method, this study analyzed views about counter-examples according to a method of approach to statements and the classification of counter-examples and their criteria. The study also described the learnability of the content of counter-examples presented in Korean secondary school mathematics textbooks. The results showed that generating many counter-examples enables learners to understand mathematical concepts exactly, construct links between mathematical contents, and have flexible thoughts about mathematical objects. Considering the learnability of counter-examples, the contents of counter-examples in school mathematics textbooks are needed for mathematics teachers and students to generate numerous counter-examples and verify the justification of generating counter-examples in various manners.

The Purpose of this study was to analyze STS contents in elementary school science textbooks according to 6th, 7th and revision 2007 national curriculum. The contents of STS were analyzed by the STS elements of Yager and the STS topics of Piel's standard. Major findings from the analyses are as follows: (1) The STS contents in the science textbooks of the 6th curriculum took up 13.7% and increased to 18.3% in the 7th and 19.0% in the revision 2007, which showed that the textbooks followed the goal of the national curriculum faithfully. (2) Based on the STS elements by Yager's standard, most of STS content is focused on 'Application of science', 'Social problems and issues' and 'Local and community relevance'. (3) Based on the STS topics by Piel's standard, most of STS contents are focused on 'Effect of technological development' and 'Society of science'. These results indicate that recent STS education trends are reflected on the 6th, 7th and revision 2007 textbooks well. However, it is suggested that some improvement is needed, such as diversification of topic.
This study aims to investigate the extent to which Korean high school textbooks incorporate opportunities for students to engage in the mathematical modeling process through tasks related to exponential and logarithmic functions. The tasks in three textbooks were analyzed based on the actions required for each stage in the mathematical modeling process, which includes identifying essential variables, formulating models, performing operations, interpreting results, and validating the outcomes. The study identified 324 units across the three textbooks, and the reliability coefficient was 0.869, indicating a high level of agreement in the coding process. The analysis revealed that the distribution of tasks requiring engagement in each of the five stages was similar in all three textbooks, reflecting the 2015 revised curriculum and national curriculum system. Among the 324 analyzed tasks, the highest proportion of the units required performing operations found in the mathematical modeling process. The findings suggest a need to include high-quality tasks that allow students to experience the entire process of mathematical modeling and to acknowledge the limitations of textbooks in providing appropriate opportunities for mathematical modeling with a heavy emphasis on performing operations. These results provide implications for the development of mathematical modeling activities and the reconstruction of textbook tasks in school mathematics, emphasizing the need to enhance opportunities for students to engage in mathematical modeling tasks and for teachers to provide support for students in the tasks.
In Korea where there is the national curriculum and teachers depend highly on textbooks, the school mathematics is based on curriculum and textbooks. Especially considering responsibility that textbooks should reflect the curriculum properly, it is necessary to analyze the connection of mathematics curriculum and textbooks in order to review and improve the quality of our mathematics education. This research analyzes the connection of curriculum and textbooks for 5~6 grades and aims to have some implications for revision of the textbooks when application of elementary mathematics textbooks based on the 2009 revised national curriculum is completed to all grades. Following the preceding research for 1~2 and 3~4 grades, this research sets 5~6 grades as a subject of analysis and has four contents of analysis; analysis of textbooks based on restructured achievement criteria, analysis of connections between unit objectives of textbooks and the reconstructed achievement criteria, analysis of textbooks related to mathematical terms and symbols, and analysis of textbooks related to mathematical process. The result of analysis has some implications to develop textbooks based on the 2015 revised national curriculum.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning contents presented in high school science and in pre-service science textbooks of college of education, and to examine educational implications for pre-service science teachers by analysing their connection to each other. High school science is called as 'convergence science.' Seven high school science textbooks and eleven science textbooks related to physics, chemistry, biological science, and earth science for pre-service teachers were selected to analyse learning contents. The relationship between high school science with those of college-level science textbooks for pre-service science teachers was found when the learning contents were compared. Science textbooks for pre-service science teachers have the biggest number of learning contents on the chapter 'Energy and Environment' of high school science. About 86.6% of learning contents of high school science were introduced on textbooks on science, but pre-service teachers should learn the remainder. The part of learning contents presented in high school science textbooks was higher than the college-level for pre-service science teachers. Moreover, the part of learning contents was included in Engineering & Technology. And these required a special teacher education. Accordingly, the results suggested that learning contents for high school science should be optimized and reduced. Also, various educational programs should be developed and educational curriculum for pre-service science teachers should be revised.
There seems to be a public consensus that the content of Korean mathematics textbooks is extensive and of a high level of difficulty. However, such judgment is the result of a generalization based on individual experience or on the results from comparisons of the international levels of achievement. Therefore, a more objective and stricter approach to the determination of the quantity and level of difficulty of mathematics content is necessary. For this purpose, this study has compared the content of Koreas 6th and 7th junior high school curriculums, and the Korean mathematics curriculum to textbooks of the United States, which has a considerable influence on the making of Korean mathematics textbooks. First of all, a comparison of Koreas 6th and 7th junior high school mathematics curriculums showed a slight reduction in the total quantity of content, as more content was deleted than was added in the 7th curriculum. However, given the fact that the number of hours of mathematics classes has been reduced, the reduction in content cannot be regarded as anything more than a simple reflection of the reduction in hours, proving that the 7th curriculum has not met its revision objective of reducing the content by 30%. Meanwhile, the comparison of the United States junior high school mathematics textbooks to Korea's 7th curriculum showed that the 7th grade content in the United States was much broader, encompassing content which in Korea ranged from the 2nd grade of elementary school to the 2nd year of junior high school. Therefore, on the surface, it may appear that the overall level of content in the American mathematics textbook is lower than that of the Korean. However, there are several cafes, such as statistics and probability, where certain content was more difficult and introduced at an earlier grade in the United States than in Korea. In fact, it can be said that Korea students tend to find content of the mathematics textbooks to be harder than they actually are because they are delivered as a mere aggregate of algorithms, with little consideration to its application in their everyday lives. In this respect, there is much room for improvement on the mathematics textbooks of Korea.
This study aimed to analysis of concepts and inquiry activities related to the 'Earth Science' area in the South Korean elementary school textbooks to the current and to seek the improvement of future textbook. For the study, we were collected South Korean elementary school textbooks to the current. After the collection had been made, we were analyzed related to the 'Earth' area in the South Korean elementary school textbooks and were extracted central concepts and inquiry activities. The result of this study: First, there were 'A change in the land', 'Strata and Fossil', 'Volcanoes and Earthquakes', 'Earth and Moon', 'The weather', 'The Solar system and the Star', and 'Seasonal Change' in the central concepts related to the 'Earth' area in the South Korean elementary school textbooks to the current. Second, central concepts were almost the same but the curriculum was changed. Third, inquiry activities also were confirmed to be maintained with little change. This result was believed that it can provide a variety of suggestions at this point in changing the curriculum.
