  • Peptides with specific sequences against $LaPO_4$ and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were discovered through peptide phage display technique as an application to biomolecular recognition of inorganic materials. Sequencing results showed that a motif consisting of serine and proline was commonly expressed in specific sequences. It was postulated that serine directly bound to nanoparticles using its terminal hydroxyl (OH) group. In this sense, oxygen atom seemed to work as a ligand to metal ions and hydrogen atom as a H-bond donor, was thought to bind to the oxygen atoms or the hydroxyl groups on particle surface. Also, it was expected that proline assists serine to make an ideal van der Waals contact between serine and nanoparticles, which optimizes the binding of peptide onto surface.

  • In an effort to develop alternative single buffer layer technology for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ (YBCO) coated conductors, we have investigated both LaMnO$_3$, (LMO) and La$_2$Zr$_2$O$_{7}$ (LZO) as potential buffer layers. High-quality LMO films were grown directly on textured Ni and Ni-W (3%) substrates using rf magnetron sputtering. Highly textured LZO buffers were grown on textured Ni substrates using sol-gel alkoxide processing route. YBCO films were then grown on both LMO and LZO buffers using pulsed laser deposition. Detailed X-ray studies have shown that YBCO films were grown on both LMO and LZO layers with a single epitaxial orientation. A high J$_{c}$ of over 1 MA/cm$^2$ at 77 K and self-field was obtained on YBCO films grown on both LMO-buffered Ni or Ni-W substrates, and also on LZO-buffered Ni substrates. We have identified LaMnO$_3$ as a good diffusion barrier layer for Ni and it also provides a good template for growing high current density YBCO films. Similarly we have also demonstrated the growth of high J$_{c}$ YBCO films on all solution buffers. We will discuss in detail about our buffer deposition processes. processes.s.s.s.s.

  • The avifauna of from Manbokdae to Siribong in Jiri Mountain part of Baekdudaegan, was surveyed from May to November, 2002. In total, we observed 901 birds, and they were consisted of 49 species,23 families and 7 orders. The largest number of birds were observed in valley and followed by in low ridge, Road, Agricultural area and high ridge. The dominant species were Great Tit (Parus major) and then Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla), Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus), Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica) and Long-tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus). The highest species diversity index was 2.85 at low ridge(846m), and the lowest was 1.83 at high ridge(1,433m). In this study, the valley is the most important area for the habitat of birds and followed by the low ridge and agricultural area. Thus, to decide the management required area of Baekdudaegan, it should include valley and nearby lowland as well as ridge area. Moreover, there should be some sort of restriction of vehicle usage when a road cross or close to the Baekdudaegan.

  • As a part of the Department of Energy's Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Program, long-reach manipulators are being considered for the retrieval of waste from large storage tanks. Long-reach manipulators may have characteristics significantly different from those of typical industrial robots because of the flexibility of long links needed to cover the large workspace. To avoid structural vibrations during operation, control algorithms employing various types of shaping filters were investigated. A new approach that uses imbedded simulation was developed and compared with others. In the new approach, generation of joint trajectories considering link flexibility was also investigated.

  • One of the primary advantages of acrylic resin teeth is their ability to bond chemically to the denture base resins. Fracture od acrylic resin teeth from a maxillary denture, however, is not uncommon. Bonding failures have been attributed to faulty boil-out procedures that fail to eliminate all traces of wax from the ridge lap surfaces of the teeth and to contamination of the ridge lap surface by careless application of tinfoil substitute. Attempts to increase the strength of the bond between acrylic resin teeth and heat-cured denture base resin include grinding the glossy ridge lap surface (in fluid system), painting the ridgelap surface of the teeth with monomer-polymer solution, and cutting retention grooves in the ridge lap surface of the teeth. This latter method has been tested by applying a tensile force in a labial direction to the incisal part of the lingual surface of the acrylic resin teeth. A progressive shear compressive load was applied at an angle to the lingual surface of acrylic resin teeth bonded to denture base acrylic resin. No statistically singificant advantage was derived by preparing retention grooves of different shapes in the ridgelap surface of the denture teeth.

  • Ridge orientations of fingerprint image are crucial informations in many parts of fingerprint recognition such as enhancement, matching and classification. Therefore it is essential to extract the ridge orientations of image accurately because it directly affects the performance of the system. The two main properties of ridge orientation are 1) global characteristic(gradual change in whole part of fingerprint) and 2) local characteristic(abrupt change around core and delta points). When we only consider the local characteristic, estimated ridge orientations are well around singular points but not robust to noise. When the global characteristic is only considered, to estimate ridge orientation is robust to noise but cannot represent the orientation around singular points. In this paper, we propose a novel method for estimating ridge orientation which represents local characteristic specifically as well as be robust to noise. We reduce the noise caused by scar using iterative outlier rejection. We apply adaptive measurement resolution in each fingerprint area to estimate the ridge orientation around singular points accurately. We evaluate the performance of proposed method using synthetic fingerprint and FVC 2002 DB. We compare the accuracy of ridge orientation. The performance of fingerprint authentication system is evaluated using FVC 2002 DB.

  • The withdrawal method for protecting the uncontaminated part from the spread of contaminants was suggested by a simultaneous equation. The formulation of them is based upon the build up of the ridge part between the contaminated and uncontaminated parts that resulted from the efficient use of barrier wells. The quality in the withdrawn groundwater depends upon the heads at wells no. 5 and 6. The determination of pumping rates and qualities with changing the heads at wells no. 5 and 6 should be given by considering the demand for water use and the capacity and cost for removing the contained contaminants. The results of this study should be used in taking a plan for supplying water use as well as preventing the spread of contaminants from some known contaminated sources.

  • This paper presents the dynamic characteristics analysis of the purlin-sheet roofs by the random vibration theories. Results show that the natural vibration frequency of the purlin-sheet roof is low, while the frequencies and mode distributions are very intensive. The random vibration theory should be used for the dynamic characteristics of the roof structures due to complex vibration response. Among the first 20th vibration modes, the first vibration mode is mainly the deformations of purlins, while the rest modes are the overall deformations of the roof. In the following 30th modes, it mainly performs unilateral local deformations of the roof. The frequency distribution of the first 20th modes varies significantly while those of the following 30th modes are relatively sensitive. For different parts, the contributions of vibration modes on the vibration response are different. For the part far from the roof ridge, only considering the first 5th modes can reflect the wind-induced vibration response. For the part near the ridge, at least the first 12 modes should be considered, due to complex vibration response. The wind vibration coefficients of the upwind side are slightly higher than that of the leeward side. Finally, the corresponding wind vibration coefficient for the purlin-sheet roof is proposed.

  • Morphological characters of the scales of Engraulidae fishes, Engraulis japonica and Thrissa kammalensis, are described with illustrative figures. The scales are primitive cycloid and quadrangular or pentagonal without concentric foci. In Engraulis japonica arrangements of the grooves are irregular, and tile grooves converge from the outer margin to the central part of the scale. In Thrissa kammalensis the arrangements of the grooves are transverse in the major part of the scale except the apical part. The ridge of the apical part form a network arrangement, and parallel with the grooves. In the central part of the scales of the both species there are several fingerprint-like structures.
