  • Recently, sub-micron CMOS technologies have taken the place of III-V materials in a number of areas in integrated circuit designs, in particular even for the applications of gjgabit optical communication applications due to its low cost, high integration level, low power dissipation, and short turn-around time characteristics. In this paper, a four-channel transimpedance amplifier (TIA) array is realized in a standard 0.35mm CMOS technology Each channel includes an optical PIN photodiode and a TIA incorporating the fully differential regulated cascode (RGC) input configuration to achieve effectively enhanced transconductance(gm) and also exploiting the inductive peaking technique to extend the bandwidth. Post-layout simulations show that each TIA demonstrates the mid-band transimpedance gain of 59.3dBW, the -3dB bandwidth of 2.45GHz for 0.5pF photodiode capacitance, and the average noise current spectral density of 18.4pA/sqrt(Hz). The TIA array dissipates 92mw p in total from a single 3.3V supply The four-channel RGC TIA array is suitable for low-power, high-speed optical interconnect applications.

  • This paper presents a 6 Gb/s 4-channel arrayed transimpedance amplifiers (TIA) with the gain control for 4-channel passive optical network in $0.13{\mu}m$ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. A regulated cascode input stage and inductive-series peaking are proposed in order to increase the bandwidth. Also, a variable gain control is implemented to provide flexibility to the overall system. The TIA has a maximum $98.1dB{\Omega}$ gain and an input current noise level of about 37.8 pA/Hz. The die area of the fabricated TIA is $1.9mm{\times}2.2mm$ for 4-channel. The power dissipation is 47.64 mW/1ch.

  • Gigabit transimpedance amplifiers are realihzed in submicron CMOS technologies for Gigabit Ethernet applications. The regulated cascode technique is exploited to enhance the bandwidth and noise performance simultaneously so that it can isolate the large input parasitic capacitance including photodiode capacitance from the determination of the bandwidth. The 1.25Gb/s TIA implemented in a 0.6um CMOS technology shows the measured results of 58dBohm transimpedance gain, 950MHz bandwidth for a 0.5pF photodiode capacitance, 6.3pA/sqrt(Hz) average noise current spectral density, and 85mW power dissipation from a single 5V supply. In addition, a 10Gb/s TIA is realized in a 0.18um CMOS incorporating the RGC input and the inductive peaking techniques. It provides 59.4dBohm transimpedance gain, 8GHz bandwidth for a 0.25pF photodiode capacitance, 20pA/sqrt(Hz) noise current spectral density, and 14mW power consumption for a single 1.8V supply.

  • In this paper, three types of optical receivers are designed using a $0.35-{\mu}m$ standard CMOS technology for plastic optical fiber (POF) applications. Basic common-source transimpedance amplifier (CS-TIA), common-gate TIA (CG-TIA), and regulated-cascode TIA (RGC-TIA) are optimally designed, and their transimpedance gain (TZ gain), 3-dB bandwidth, and noise characteristics are compared and analyzed. As a result of simulations, the RGC-TIA indicates better TZ gain and 3-dB bandwidth than other topologies, and CS-TIA has the best noise performance. Each optical receiver occupies area of $0.35mm^2$.

  • In this paper, a single-bit 3rd-order feedforward delta sigma modulator is proposed for audio applications. The proposed modulator is based on a class-C inverter for low voltage and power applications. For the high-precision requirement, the class-C inverter with regulated cascode structure increases its DC gain and acts as a low-voltage subthreshold amplifier. The proposed Class-C inverter-based modulator is designed and simulated in 180-nm CMOS process. With no performance loss and a low supply voltage compatibility, the proposed class-C inverter-based switched-capacitor modulator achieves high power efficiency. This design achieves an signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) of 93.9 dB, an signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 108 dB, an spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 102 dB, and a dynamic range (DR) of 102 dB at a signal bandwidth of 20 kHz and a sampling frequency of 4 MHz, while only using 280 μW of power consumption from a 0.8-V power supply.

  • In this paper, a couple of 10Gb/s transimpedance amplifiers are realized in a 0.18um standard CMOS technology for optical communication applications. First, the voltage-mode inverter TIA(I-TIA) exploits inverter input configuration to achieve larger effective gm, thus reducing the input impedance and increasing the bandwidth. I-TIA demonstrates $56dB{\Omega}$ transimpedance gain, 14GHz bandwidth for 0.25pF photodiode capacitance, and -16.5dBm optical sensitivity for 0.5A/W responsivity, 9dB extinction ration and $10^{-12}$ BER. However, both its inherent parasitic capacitance and the package parasitics deteriorate the bandwidth significantly, thus mandating very judicious circuit design. Meanwhile, the current-mode RGC TIA incorporates the regulated cascade input configuration, and thus isolates the large input parasitic capacitance from the bandwidth determination more effectively than the voltage-mode TIA. Also, the parasitic components give much less impact on its bandwidth. RGC TIA provides $60dB{\Omega}$ transimpedance gain, 10GHz bandwidth for 0.25pF photodiode capacitance, and -15.7dBm optical sensitivity for 0.5A/W responsivity, 9dB extinction ration and $10^{-12}$ BER. Main drawback is the power dissipation which is 4.5 times larger than the I-TIA.

  • Novel class A CMOS second-generation current conveyors (CCII) using 0.6.mu.m n-well standard CMOS process for high-frequency current-mode signal processing were developed. The CCII consists of a regulated current-cell for the voltage input and a cascode current mirror for the current output. In this architecture, the two input stages are coupled by current mirrors to reduce the current input impedance. Measurements of the fabricated cCII show that the current input impedance is 308 .ohm. and the 3-dB cutoff frequency when used as a voltage amplifier extends beyond 10MHz. The linear dynamic ranges of voltage and current are from -0.5V to 1.5V and from -100.mu.A to +120.mu.A for supply voltage V$\_$DD/ = -V$\_$SS/=2.5V, respectively. The power dissipation is 2 mW and the active chip area is 0.2 * 0.2 [mm$\^$2/].
