A mathematical model for the pyrolysis processes during unforced smoldering of cigarette was proposed in this study by analyzing the physical model of the smoldering cigarette (including the establishment of burning front between burning zone and pyrolysis zone, and analyzing the involvement of main factors such as pyrolysis of virgin tobacco, evaporation of water, and internal heat transport in the processes). Thermal conduction of cigarette paper and convective and radiative heat transfer at the outer surface were also considered via the thermal resistance law for the competitive heat transfer mechanisms. The governing partial differential equations were solved using an integral method. Model predictions of smoldering speed, or linear burn rate, as well as temperature and density profiles in the pyrolysis zone for different kinds of cigarettes were found to be close to the experimental data in the literature (Muramatsu, 1981). The model provides a relatively fast and efficient way to simulate the pyrolysis processes and offers a practical tool for exploring important parameters for a smoldering cigarette, such as blended tobacco composition, properties of cigarette paper, and heat flux from the burning zone to the pyrolysis zone.
Mild pyrolysis of four different coals (two bituminous coals and two Korean antracite) was investigated. Desulfurization characteristics, weight loss and variation of heating values were studied. As operating variables of experiment, pyrolysis temperature($350{\sim}550^{\circ}C$), pyrolysis time(5~20 min.) and particle size(0~3.55mm) were examined. The maximum sulfur removal rate of bituminous coal and anthracite were 38% and 28%, respectively. The optimum mild pyrolysis conditions were 10~15 min for pyrolysis time and $450{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ for pyrolysis temperature. The mild pyrolysis was effective to reduce organic sulfur content. Heating values of char per mass after pyrolysis increased about 5% compared to raw coal. The effect of coal particle size on the desulfurization was not observed.

The gas permeation properties have been studied on carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes prepared by pyrolysis of P84 polyimide under various conditions. P84 polyimide shows high permselectivities (O$_2$/N$_2$= 9.17 and CO$_2$/N$_2$= 35) for various gas pairs and has a good processibility because it is easily soluble in high polar solvents such as N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP), dimethylformamide (DMF), and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). After pyrolysis under Ar flow, the change in the heating rate was found to affect the gas permeation properties to some extent. The permeabilities of the selected gases were shown to be in the order He > CO$_2$> O$_2$> N$_2$for all the CMS membranes, whose order was in accordance with the order of kinetic gas diameters. It also revealed that the pyrolysis temperature considerably influenced the gas permeation properties of the CMS membranes derived from P84 polyimide. The CMS membranes pyrolized at 700$\^{C}$ temperature exhibited the highest permeability with relatively targe loss in permselectivity. This means that the pyrolysis temperature should be varied in accordance with target gases to be separated.

Several types of reactors have been used during the past decade to perform fast pyrolysis of biomass. Among the developed fast pyrolysis reactors, fluidized bed reactors have been widely used in the fast pyrolysis process. In recent years, experimental studies have been conducted on the characteristics of biomass fast pyrolysis in a spouted bed reactor. The fluidization characteristics of a spouted bed reactor are influenced by particle properties, fluid jet velocity, and the structure of the core and annulus. The geometry of the spouted bed reactor is the main factor determining the structure of the core and annulus. Accordingly, to optimize the design of a spouted bed reactor, it is necessary to study the pyrolysis characteristics of biomass. However, no detailed investigations have been made of the fast pyrolysis characteristics of biomass in accordance with the geometry of the spouted bed reactor. In this study, fast pyrolysis experiments using Jatropha curcas L. seed shell cake were conducted in a conical spouted bed reactor to study the effects of reaction temperature and reactor cone angle on the product yield and pyrolysis oil quality. The highest energy yield of pyrolysis oil obtained was 63.9% with a reaction temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ and reactor cone angle of $44^{\circ}$. The results showed that the reaction temperature and reactor cone angle affected the quality of the pyrolysis oil.
In this study, ultrasonic spray pyrolysis combined with salt-assisted decomposition, a process that adds sodium nitrate ($NaNO_3$) into a titanium precursor solution, is used to synthesize nanosized titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) particles. The added $NaNO_3$ prevents the agglomeration of the primary nanoparticles in the pyrolysis process. The nanoparticles are obtained after a washing process, removing $NaNO_3$ and NaF from the secondary particles, which consist of the salts and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. The effects of pyrolysis temperature on the size, crystallographic characteristics, and bandgap energy of the synthesized nanoparticles are systematically investigated. The synthesized $TiO_2$ nanoparticles have a size of approximately 2-10 nm a bandgap energy of 3.1-3.25 eV, depending on the synthetic temperature. These differences in properties affect the photocatalytic activities of the synthesized $TiO_2$ nanoparticles.
In this study, we investigated the recovery of copper and synthetic fuel from the waste wire by low temperature pyrolysis which can overcome problems of the recent incineration methods. Through thermal decomposition process of waste wire, we achieved the big advantage of getting usable resources as the forms of copper and fuel with a very high value. The TG/DTA and small-scale reaction experiments were carried out to determine an optimum temperature for waste wire pyrolysis. And the pyrolysis was done at 350, 450, and $550^{\circ}C$, respectively, and heating rate of the TG/DTA was $5^{\circ}C/min$ untill $700^{\circ}C$. The result shows that the optimum temperature range for dehydrochlorination of PVC was $280{\sim}350^{\circ}C$, as a lower temperature range than $400{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ of PE and PP. Practically over 95% of copper metal and synthetic fuel, which has the 8027 kcal/kg as a calorific value, were recovered from the waste wire samples.

Recently, low-temperature pyrolysis technology has been studied as a recycling method for waste plastic. Low-temperature pyrolysis technology for waste plastic produces pyrolysis oil that can be used as an energy resource, but solid residue remains. Waste plastic pyrolysis residues are mostly landfilled due to their limited use. In this study, it is investigated that mixed waste plastic pyrolysis residues could be recycled into activated carbon. It was confirmed that the fixed carbon content of the residue was 33.69 % from proximate Analysis. Chemical activation was used to manufacture activated carbon. KOH was used as an activator. To investigate the effect of the mixing ratio of KOH and residue, samples were mixed at ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0. The mixed sample was chemically activated at an activation temperature of 800 ℃ for 1 hour. As a result of analyzing the characteristics of activated carbon through BET, it was confirmed that the specific surface area increased as the mixing ratio of KOH increased.
We identified pyrolysis condition, effect of catalyzer and pyrolysis mechanism through contact decomposed method by adding Bentonite in waste plastic of hospital solid waste. The result from this study were summarized as the followings: 1. The optimum fuel oil were obtained when hospital wasted plastic (P.P) and Bentonite were mixed in the ratio of 30:1. 2. Maximum absorption wave of hospital wasted plastic (P.P) appeared at 2900cm$^{-1}$, 1480cm$^{-1}$, 1360cm$^{-1}$ and 1180 cm$^{-1}$ by FT-IR and the plastics were identified and confirmed. 3. Reaction temperature of hospital wasted plastic started at 360$\circ$C, proceed rapidly at 437.5$\circ$C and finished at 481$\circ$C. The residue was 0.729%. When bentonire was added started at 318$\circ$C, proceed rapidly at 399.5$\circ$C and finished at 449.3$\circ$C, the residue being 4.23%. 4. Pyrolysis products of hospital wasted plastic were about 90 kinds. The Main components were 2-Heptene-3-ethyl-4-trimethyl (27.4%), 1-Heptene-2-isobutyl-6-methyl (8.6%) and 1-Heptene decene (7.7%). There was little component difference at different temperature. This is the result from stability of decomposition product. 5. Pyrolysis efficiency increased by the addition Bentonire. 6. Some of the Environmental and Sanitary problems could be solved by the pyrolysis of hospital wasted plastic and the decomposed products were to be used as fuel oil.
Thermal behavior of bromphenols was investigated by direct pyrolysis at high temperature. The thermal degradation products formed by the pyrolysis of mono-bromophenols (o-, m-, and p-) were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. During the pyrolysis reactions, several kinds of dioxins and furans were produced, and the relative ratio of pyro-products was dependent on the substituted position of bromine in phenolic structure due to the effect of symmetry and steric hindrance. The formation of dioxins can be explained by the phenoxy radical addition and Br atom elimination at an ortho-carbon site on phenolic structure. On the other hand, the formation of furans can be explained by the ortho-ortho carbon coupling of phenoxy radicals at unsubstituted sites to form o, o'-dihydroxydiphenyl intermediate via its keto-tautomer, followed by $H_2O$ elimination. The pyrolysis temperature has also a substantial effect on the dimerized products quantities but little effect on the type of pyro-products. Moreover, the formation mechanism of pyro-products was suggested on the basis of products identified.
In this study, waste tire rubbers were pyrolyzed in a lab-scale pyrolysis plant equipped with a fluidized bed reactor in a temperature ranges of $450-650^{\circ}C$. The main object of this work is to investigate the properties of pyrolysis oil with reaction temperatures and the behavior of sulfur in the products when waste polypropylene was added for co-pyrolysis. The maximum yield of oil was about 52wt.% at the reaction temperature of $456^{\circ}C$. From GC-MS analysis, the pyrolysis oils consisted mainly of limonene, toluene, xylene, styrene, trimethylbenzene, methylnaphthalenes and some heteroatom(sulfur and nitrogen)-containing compounds. The addition of waste polypropylene resulted in decrease in sulfur contents of the pyrolysis oils.
