Surface-modified poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) films and scaffolds were treated with plasma discharge in oxygen gas and subsequently subjected to $in$$situ$ grafting of acrylic acid (AA) in order to increase the cell compatibility. The surface of AA-grafted PLLA was converted to hydroxyapatite (HA)-deposited PLLA in stimulated body fluid (SBF). After the samples were immersed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), fetal bovine serum (FBS), normal saline, or cell medium, the water contact angles were significantly reduced on the surface of HA-deposited PLLA. Chondrocyte and osteoblast showed a higher attachment and cell proliferation on HA-deposited surfaces and in particular, it was confirmed that chondrocyte was considerably influenced by HA. However, osteoblast showed better cell proliferation on the surfaces immersed in FBS, cell medium or HA-deposited surface. In addition, the cell proliferation in 3D scaffolds was much higher than that on film type, irrespective of chondrocyte and osteoblast. Therefore, such surface-modified PLLAs are expected to be useful as organic-inorganic hybrid scaffolds in the regeneration of cartilage and bone.
Polyelectrolytes of various ionization degrees, which are prepared by neutralization of poly(acrylic acid)(PAA), were crosslinked by ethylane glycol diglycidyl ether(EGDE) in aqueous solution. $C_{gel}$, the minimum polymer concentration at which gelation occurs, was higher than expected. $C_{gel}$ was comparable with that of neutral polymer. This is considered to be due to the size contraction of polyelectrolyte, which comes from ionic strength increase as polymer concentration is increased. $C_{gel}$ is low when molecular weight of the sample becomes high. It reveals that polyelectrolyte is crosslinked in coil form not in extended rod form. This behavior is similar to the crosslinking of neutral polymers. Polyelectrolytes of partially ionized sample generally follow the behavior of fully ionized polyelectrolyte. Polyelectrolyte with added salt was also studied. Considering the pH dependence of EDGE reactivity it was difficult to compare the system which differs in pH significantly.
The interactions between the surface of scaffolds and specific cells play an important role in tissue engineering applications. Some cell adhesive ligand peptides including Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) have been grafted into polymeric scaffolds to improve specific cell attachment. In order to make cell adhesive scaffolds for tissue regeneration, biodegradable nonporous poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) films were prepared by using a solvent casting technique with chloroform. The hydrophobic PLLA films were surface-modified by Argon plasma treatment and in situ direct acrylic acid (AA) grafting to get hydrophilic PLLA-g-PAA. The obtained carboxylic groups of PLLA-g-PAA were coupled with the amine groups of Gly-Arg-Asp-Gly (GRDG, control) and GRGD as a ligand peptide to get PLLA-g-GRDG and PLLA-g-GRGD, respectively. The surface properties of the modified PLLA films were examined by various surface analyses. The surface structures of the PLLA films were confirmed by ATR-FTIR and ESCA, whereas the immobilized amounts of the ligand peptides were 138-145 pmol/$cm^2$. The PLLA surfaces were more hydrophilic after AA and/or RGD grafting but their surface morphologies showed still relatively smoothness. Fibroblast adhesion to the PLLA surfaces was improved in the order of PLLA control

CNT and permalloy composite plating was investigated. CNTs were pretreated prior to electroplating to disassemble the tangled CNT lumps. The ball milling as a physical pretreatment and the acid treatment as a chemical pretreatment were used. 10M nitric acid and 10 M sulfuric acid were used for the chemical pretreatment. Sulfuric acid was more effective than nitric acid to disassemble CNT lumps. To disperse CNT in the solution, surfactants were used. SDS, Triton X-100 and PAA were used for this purpose. More CNTs were incorporated in permalloy coating when PAA was used as a surfactant. The surface morphologies were observed with FESEM after electroplating CNT and permalloy. The current densities were varied from 10 to $80\;mA/cm^2$ and the concentration of PAA was fixed at 2 g/L. The optimum current density without surface cracks was $20\;mA/cm^2$. The crystallinity of the deposit was analyzed with XRD and the surface hardness was analyzed with Vicker's hardness tester. The corrosion behavior was analyzed with polarization plot. The physical properties of permalloy were not improved with CNT composite plating.
We introduce a novel and versatile approach for preparing self-assembled nanoporous multilayered films with antireflective properties. Protonated polystyrene-block-poly (4-vinylpyrine) (PS-b-P4VP) and anionic polystyrene-block-poly (acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) block copolymer micelles (BCM) were used as building blocks for the layer-by-layer assembly of BCM multilayer films. BCM film growth is governed by electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions between the oppositely BCMs. Both film porosity and film thickness are dependent upon the charge density of the micelles, with the porosity of the film controlled by the solution pH and the molecular weight (Mw) of the constituents. PS7K-b-P4VP28K/PS2K-b-PAA8K films prepared at pH 4 (for PS7K-b-P4VP28K) and pH 6 (for PS2K-b-PAA8K) are highly nanoporous and antireflective. In contrast, PS7K-b-P4VP28K/PS2K-b-PAA8K films assembled at pH 4/4 show a relatively dense surface morphology due to the decreased charge density of PS2K-b-PAA8K. Films formed from BCMs with increased PS block and decreased hydrophilic block (P4VP or PAA) size (e.g., PS36K-b-P4VP12K/PS16K-b-PAA4K at pH 4/4) were also nanoporous. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the nanostructured electrochemical sensors based on patterning methods show the electrochemical activities. Anionic poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) layers were selectively and uniformly deposited onto the catalase (CAT)-coated surface using the micro-contact printing method. The pH-induced charge reversal of catalase can provide the selective deposition of consecutive PE multilayers onto patterned PSS layers by causing the electrostatic repulsion between next PE layer and catalase. Based on this patterning method, the hybrid patterned multilayers composed of platinum nanoparticles (PtNP) and catalase were prepared and then their electrochemical properties were investigated from sensing $H_2O_2$ and NO gas. This study was based on the papers reported by our group. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 128, 9935 (2006); Adv. Mater. 19, 4364 (2007); Electro. Mater. Lett. 3, 163 (2007)).

A cation-exchange nanofiber poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF) membrane was prepared by a radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP) of sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS) in the presence of the polymerizable access agents in methanol solution. The used polymerizable access agents include styrene, acrylic acid, and vinyl pyrrolidone. The anion-exchange nanofiber PVdF membrane was also prepared by RIGP of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and its subsequent chemical modification. The successful preparations of cation- and anion-exchange PVdF membranes were confirmed via SEM, XPS and thermal analysis. The content of the grafting yield, ion-exchange group, and water uptake was in the range of 30.0~32.3%, 2.81~3.01 mmol/g and 66.6~147%, respectively. The proton conductivity at 20$^{\circ}C$ was in the range of 0.020~0.053 S/cm. From the result, the prepared ionexchange PVdF membrane can be used as a separator in battery cells.
PMMA panels are made by two fabrication methods; cell molding and belt molding processes. But these methods have disadvantages in productivity and cost. So plastic processing engineers are very interested in developing a new production method for PMU panels using plastic films as molds because the new method can reduce production cost of belt molding method as well as can improve productivity of cell molding method. To give a solution for developing such a new molding method, the effects of melthyl methacrylate compound composition and curing reaction condition on the processability and mechanical strength of PMMA panels were investigated in this study. Poly(vinyl acetate) film was used as molds in producing PMMA panels. To determine an MMA compound showing good processability and good mechanical properties after curing, ingredients and their compositions were optimized step by step. Acrylic acid, as a coupling agent and a modifier, played an important role in increasing mechanical strength of PMMA panels.
Crystal mean size and shape change of calcium carbonate crystal was investigated by the temperature change and addition of PAA solution in the soda process. At low temperature($30^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$), calcite particles were made by. But at high temperature($80^{\circ}C$), aragonite particles were made by. At $30^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$, Crystal shape were not changed by adding PAA solution. At moderate temperature($60^{\circ}C$), aragonite was obtained by adding PAA aqueous solution. Crystal shape was changed by adding PAA molecules. The higher concentration of PAA solution is, the more aragonite particles were observed. Incase of calcite and aragonite, mean size of calcium carbonate crystals were increased by higher molecule weight and higher concentration of PAA solution. But in the shape change region, the molecule weight of PAA was the main parameter of increasing mean crystal size.

The most recent developments in two areas: (a) synthesis of inorganic particles with control over size and shape by polymer additives, and (b) synthesis of inorganic-polymer hybrid materials by bulk polymerization of blends of monomers with nanosized crystals are reviewed. The precipitations of inorganics, such as zinc oxide or calcium carbonate, in presence and under the control of bishydrophilic block or comb copolymers, are relevant to the field of Biomineralization. The application of surface modified latex particles, used as controlling agents, and the formation of hybrid crystals in which the latex is embedded in otherwise perfect crystals, are discussed. The formation of nano sized spheres of amorphous calcium carbonate, stabilized by surfactant-like polymers, is also discussed. Another method for the preparation of nanosized inorganic functional particles is the controlled pyrolysis of metal salt complexes of poly(acrylic acid), as demonstrated by the syntheses of lithium cobalt oxide and zinc/magnesium oxide. Bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate blends, with for example, nanosized zinc oxide, revealed that the mechanisms of tree radical polymerization respond to the presence of these particles. The termination by radical-radical interaction and the gel effect are suppressed in favor of degenerative transfer, resulting in a polymer with enhanced thermal stability. The optical properties of the resulting polymer-particle blends are addressed based on the basic discussion of the miscibility of polymers and nanosized particles.
In this study, composite membrane is prepared by Layer-by-Layer method using hydrophobic polymer as a coating material on the polysulfone support. The existence of coating layer on the surface and cross section was confirmed by the scanning electronic microscopy. The flux and rejection of the resulting membranes were characterized using 100 ppm NaCl feed solution. PVSA, PEI, PAA, PSSA, PSSA_MA were used as a coating polymer in this study. The composite membrane prepared by using 8,000 ppm PAA solution (Ion strength = 0.35, Coating time = 3 min) and 10,000 ppm PEI solution (Coating time = 4 min). As a result, PAA-PEI composite membrane showed flux of 101 LMH and salt rejection of 66.7%. The composite membrane showed the comparable performance as good as NE 4040-70 (Flux = 30 LMH, Rejection = 40~70%) model produced by Toray Chemical co.
