  • A design method for a perforated panel is suggested to reduce the level of incident noise without obstructing the flow of incoming fluid. The key idea was to insert an array of 1/4 wavelength tubes around the holes of the perforate panel. First, various case studies were performed for a unit model with only one hole. In order to avoid any increase in the panel thickness, the unit model was vertically divided into three layers, and only the middle layer was used as the design domain. The number and array of 1/4 wavelength tubes connected to the hole were optimized to obtain the widest effective frequency range in the transmission loss curve as possible. Then, the optimally designed unit model was converted to a periodic array in the perforated panel to achieve the design goals. Even if the target frequency and the target transmission loss were set to 1000 Hz and 10 dB, respectively, the suggested design method for the a perforated panel could achieve noise reduction for various target values.

  • This paper describes the results of laboratory and field performance tests on the polymer modified asphalt binder and mixtures developed in this study for porous asphalt pavements. Various physical and mechanical laboratory tests including DSR and BBR tests are performed for two types of modified binders, and one type of binder is selected based on the binder testing results. Mix designs are conducted for the selected asphalt binder and a Japanese modified binder, respectively. Various performance tests including fatigue tests, wheel tracking tests, and moisture susceptibility tests are conducted for the domestic and Japanese porous asphalt mixtures. Test results indicate that the overall performance characteristics of the domestic mixture are similar to or better than those of the Japanese mixture. Based on the laboratory testing results, the domestic porous mixture is applied to a field test section. Periodic field investigations are conducted to evaluate the changes in noise level and air voids with time. The road noise analysis shows that the noise levels of the porous pavement keep increasing and, after two years, are similar to those of SMA pavements.

  • The Extended real-time Polling Service (ErtPS) is proposed tosupport QoS of VoIP service with silence suppression which generates variable size data packets in IEEE 802.16e systems. If the silence is suppressed, VoIP should support Comfort Noise Generation (CNG) which generates comfort noise for receiver's auditory sense to notify the status of connection to the user. CNG mode in silent-period generates a data with lower bit rate at long packet transmission intervals in comparison with talk-spurt. Therefore, if the ErtPS, which is designed to support service flows that generate data packets on a periodic basis, is applied to silent-period, resources of the uplink are used inefficiently. In this paper, we proposed the Improved ErtPS algorithm for efficient resource utilization of the silent-period in VoIP traffic supporting CNG. In the proposed algorithm, the base station allocates bandwidth depending on the status of voice at the appropriate interval by havingthe user inform the changes of voice status. The Improved ErtPS utilizes the Cannel Quality Information Channel (CQICH) which is an uplink subchannel for delivering quality information of channel to the base station on a periodic basis in 802.16e systems. We evaluated the performance of proposed algorithm using OPNET simulator. We validated that proposed algorithm improves the bandwidth utilization of the uplink and packet transmission latency

  • The importance of the leak detection of a buried pipe in a power plant of Korea is being emphasized as the buried pipes of a power plant are more than 20 years old. The objective of this work is to enhance the capability of the leak detection technique in a noisy environment. For this purpose, a modified cross-correlation method that can effectively remove the rotating machinery noise component is suggested. In addition, a method for leak point detection using phase information of cross-spectrum is suggested. The validity of the proposed method is verified by performing an experiment. The experimental result demonstrates that the performance of the cross-correlation method can be enhanced by reducing the periodic noise components due to mechanical equipment.

  • The oscillation of the fluid caused by external motions is called sloshing, which occurs in moving vehicles with contained fluid masses, such as the oil tankers, railroad cars, aircraft and rockets. Natural frequencies of fluid are much lower than that of solid structures, and the deformation caused by the excitation that is less than 1st natural frequency of fluid is very large. For the reason of that, sloshing characteristics under the ekcitation that is less than the 1st natural frequency must be studied prior to the consideration of natural frequencies of fluid. The experimental devices are constructed to simulate the translation motion. The rectangular tanks are made to study the sloshing characteristics under external excitation. The changes of water height are measured using an analogue camcorder and MPEG board, and those are compared to each other through a standard deviation. From the results of experiments, the sloshing is greatly influenced by the length of the rectangular tank than the width of that under the periodic translational motion in the length direction. The rapid amplification of sloshing by resonance is also confirmed experimentally.

  • Many industrial operations require continuous or nearly-continuous operation of machines, which if interrupted can result in significant financial loss. The condition monitoring of these machines has received considerable attention recent years. Rapid developments in semiconductor, computing, and communication with a remote site have led to a new generation of sensor called "smart" sensors which are capable of wireless communication with a remote site. The purpose of this research is the development of smart sensor using which can on-line perform condition monitoring. This system is addressed to detect conditions that may lead to equipment failure when it is running. Moreover it will reduce condition monitoring expense using low cost MEMS accelerometer. This sensor can receive data in real-time or periodic time from MEMS accelerometer. Furthermore, this system is capable for signal preprocessing task (High Pass Filter, Low Pass Filter and Gain Amplifier) and analog to digital converter (A/D) which is controlled by CPU. A/D converter that converts 10bit digital data is used. This sensor communicates with a remote site PC using TCP/IP protocols. Wireless LAN contain IEEE 802.11i-PSK or WPA (PSK, TKIP) encryption. Developed sensor executes performance tests for data acquisition accuracy estimations.

  • One of the important characteristics of the response of nonlinear systems is the existence of subharmonic resonances. When some conditions in parameter space are satisfied. It is possible even in the presence of damping for a periodically excited nonlinear system to possess a response which is the combination of a contribution at the excitation frequency and a component at the system natural frequency. The system natural frequency being a submultiple of the excitation frequency implies that the resulting response is a subharmonic oscillation. In general, there also co-exists, for the system, a response at the excitation frequency, and initial conditions determine which of the steady-state responses is achieved in an experiment or a numerical simulation. In single-degree-of-freedom systems with harmonic excitation, depending on the type of the nonlinearity, e.g., cubic or quadratic the frequency of subharmonic response is respectively, one-third or one-half of that of the excitation frequency. Although subharmonic resonance is one of the principal characteristics of a nonlinear system the subharmonic responses of structures in the presence of internal resonances have been studied very rarely. In this work, we consider subharmonic responses in the two-mode approximation of the plate equations. It is assumed that the two modes are in one-to-one internal resonance. Constant and periodic steady-state solutions of the averaged equations are studied. Finally, the results of direct time integration of the original equations of motion are presented and compared with those obtained from the averaged equations.

  • The screech tone of underexpanded jet is numerically calculated without any specific modeling for the screech tone itself. Fourth-order optimized compact scheme and fourth-order Runge-Kutta method are used to solve the 2D axisymmetric Euler equation. Adaptive nonlinear artificial dissipation model and generalized characteristic boundary condition are also used. The screech tone, generated by a closed loop between instability waves and quasi-periodic shock cells at the near field, is reasonably analyzed with present numerical methods for the underexpanded jet having Mach number 1.13. First of all, the centerline mean pressure distribution is calculated and compared with experimental and other numerical results. The instantaneous density contour plot shows Mach waves due to mixing layer convecting supersonically, which propagate downstream. The pressure signal and its Fourier transform at upstream and downstream shows the directivity pattern of screech tone very clearly. Most of all, we can simulate the axisymmetric mode change of screech tone very precisely with present method. It can be concluded that the basic phenomenon of screech tone including the frequency can be calculated by using high-order and high-resolution schemes without any specific numerical modeling for screech tone feedback loop.

  • A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of thick, complete (not truncated) conical shells of revolution, Unlike conventional shell theories, which are mathematically two-dimensional (2-D). the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components $u_{r},\;u_{z},\;and\;u_{\theta}$ in the radial, axial, and circumferential directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in , and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Potential (strain) and kinetic energies of the conical shells are formulated, the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of theconical shells. Novel numerical results are presented for thick, complete conical shells of revolution based upon the 3-D theory. Comparisons are also made between the frequencies from the present 3-D Ritz method and a 2-D thin shell theory.

  • This research investigates the stability analysis for the rotating and the stationary grooved journal bearing. The dynamic coefficients of the journal bearing are calculated by using FEM and the perturbation method. When journal bearing is in whirling motion, the dynamic coefficients have time-varying components as a sine wave due to the reaction force of oil film toward the center of journal even in the steady state. The solutions for the equations of motion can be assumed as the Fourier series expansion. The equations of motion can be rewritten as the linear algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability of the grooved journal bearing can be calculated by Hill's infinite determinant. The periodic function of dynamic coefficients is derived using Fourier Fast Transform(FFT).The stability of journal bearing is determined as rotating speed increases and the stability of rotating grooved journal bearing is compared and discussed with the stability of stationary grooved journal bearing.
