  • A numerical study of the flow characteristics inside a U-type circular tube is carried out in this paper. The numerical simulations carried out by using a Navier-Stokes code which is commercially available. Before detailed numerical simulations, validation of present numerical approach is made by comparing numerical solutions with experimental data. Numerical simulations are performed to study the effect of curvature on the flow characteristics inside a U-type tube. Numerical solutions show that a significant effect on the secondary flow structure in the cross section of the tube, especially in the curved section is shown when the curvature ratio, ratio of curvature to tube diameter, is smaller than about 3.5. As the curvature ratio decreases below 3.5, a counter rotating vortex is found below the primary vortex in the cross section of the tube. Another dramatic change of the flow structure is the formation of streamwise separation zone when the curvature ratio is decreased below 1.25.

  • The non-conservative form of momentum equations is often used for some two-phase flow codes instead of a conservative form because of numerical convenience. Another non-conservative form, so called, a semi-conservative form can improve the numerical solution of these codes maintaining the numerical convenience. It is close to the conservative form but still maintains the feature of the non-conservative form. A semi-conservative form of the momentum equations and a non-conservative form of the momentum equations are implemented in CUPID[1] code. The numerical results of the semi-conservative and the non-conservative forms are compared against analytical solutions and the solutions of the FLUENT code that uses the conservative form. The results clearly showed that the semi-conservative form of the momentum equations provides better solutions than the non-conservative form, especially for heterogeneous two-phase flows.

  • In this article, we investigate the solution of the inverse problem for one dimensional heat equation with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions, that is, we determine the temperature and source term with given initial and boundary conditions. Three radial basis functions(RBFs) have been used for numerical solution, and Homotopy perturbation method for analytic solution. Numerical solutions which are obtained by considering each of the three RBFs are compared to the exact solution. For appropriate value of shape parameter c, numerical solutions best approximates exact solutions. Furthermore, we have shown the impact of noisy data on the numerical solution of u and f.

  • Abstract. Numerical solutions for the evolutionary space fractional order differential equations are considered. A predictor corrector method is applied in order to obtain numerical solutions for the equation without solving nonlinear systems iteratively at every time step. Theoretical error estimates are performed and computational results are given to show the theoretical results.

  • We investigate some numerical methods for computing approximate solutions of a system of second order boundary value problems associated with obstacle unilateral and contact problems. We show that cubic spline method gives approximations which are better than that computed by higer order spline and finite difference techniques.

  • Isogeometric solution of Poisson equation is provided. NURBS (NonUniform B-spline Surface) is introduced to express both geometry of structure and unknown field of governing equation. The terms of stiffness matrix and load vector are consistently derived with very accurate geometric definition. The validity of the isogeometric formulation is demonstrated by using two numerical examples such as square plate and L-shape plate. From numerical results, the present solutions have a good agreement with analytical and finite element (FE) solutions with the use of a few cells in isogeometric analysis.

  • This paper introduces a fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based spectral analysis method for the transient responses as well as the steady-state responses of linear discrete systems. The force vibration of a viscously damped three-DOF system is considered as the illustrative numerical example. The proposed spectral analysis method is evaluated by comparing with the exact analytical solutions as well as with the numerical solutions obtained by the Runge-Kutta method.

  • A quadratic B-spline finite element method for the spatial variable combined with a Newton method for the time variable is proposed to approximate a solution of Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers (BBMB) equation. Two examples were considered to show the efficiency of the proposed scheme. The numerical solutions obtained for various viscosity were compared with the exact solutions. The numerical results show that the scheme is efficient and feasible.
