  • Division of granites in the Galmal-Yeonbug area, northern Gyeonggi, can be grey hornblende biotite granite (JHBG), biotite granite (JBG) and pink hornblende biotite granite (CHBG) by lithofacies. JHBG of small stock occurs as medium-grained with grey color and minute sphene. JBG occurs as medium-grained and light grey to grey in the north-east part of the area. The main study target CHBG covers in the north-southeast part of the area, and occurs medium-to coarse-grained with pink color. CHBG shows partly minute miaroles, and pegmatitic pocket with druse texture. From the mineral age data (K-Ar method). JHBG and JBG and CHBG are the igneous activity products of Daebo orogeny with different Jurassic and Bulgugsa disturbance of Cretaceous, respectively. And the age data also agree with geologic occurrences and interpretations of the granites in the field. CHBG consists of quartz, plagioclase, alkali-feldspar, biotite, hornblende, allanite, apatite, zircon, some calcite and opaques. Among them, alkalifeldspar and calcite occur characteristically in mostly perthitic othoclase and secondary filling of minutely miarolitic cavity, respectively. In modal analysis and QAP diagram, CHBG plots in granite field, and especially boundary of monzo-and syeno-granite fields. From the major oxide variations, molar A/CNK, $SiO_{2}\;vs\;K_{2}O$, AMF and so on, CHBG belongs to the acidic, peraluminous and high-K calc-alkaline, and was late differentiation product of single granitic magma. Barium and strontium have also dominantly differentiation trend, and in CaO vs Sr and $K_{2}O$ vs Sr, Sr was more participitated in the fractionation of plagioclase than that of alkali-feldspar. Normalized REE concentrations to chondrite value have parallel and gradual LREE enrichment and HREE depletion patterns, and weak Eu negative anomalies and narrow ranges of normalized Eu can suggest that plagioclase fractionations occurred mildly in the whole CHBG.

  • This study reports on the morphological characteristics and distribution for conservation and practical use in the Korean Peninsula of Chrysosplenium flaviflorum through a comparison with relative species. The morphological characters that were newly investigated in this study included subhypogaeus stolons and glabrous on the surface of leaves. The former has not been described by any taxonomist who had previously treated this species with the exclusion of Hara. Despite this, the latter is a very important key to using the identification of varieties of Ser. Pilosa though there were no descriptions which included Ohwi. C. flaviflorum Ohwi which was endemic and known to be distributed only in the northern area of the Korean Peninsula, was also observed in the Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, and Yeongdonggun, Chungcheongbuk-do middle area since the latest collection report in 1943. There is a requirement for further study to be conducted on the distribution and management by designation for the Special Plant Species by the Korean Ministry of Environment.

  • In this study, we investigated the relationships between the air quality (PM2.5, PM10, O3) concentrations and local geographical characteristics (terrain heights, building area ratios, population density in 9 km × 9 km gridded subareas) in the Seoul metropolitan area. To analyze the terrain heights and building area ratios, we used the geographic information system data provided by the NGII (National Geographic Information Institute). Also, we used the administrative districts and population provided by KOSIS (Korean Statistical Information Service) to estimate population densities. We analyzed the PM2.5, PM10, and O3 concentrations measured at the 146 AQMSs (air quality monitoring system) within the Seoul metropolitan area. The analysis period is from January 2010 to December 2020, and the monthly concentrations were calculated by averaging the hourly concentrations. The terrain is high in the northern and eastern parts of Gyeonggi-do and low near the west coastline. The distributions of building area ratios and population densities were similar to each other. During the analysis period, the monthly PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations at 146 AQMSs were high from January to March. The O3 concentrations were high from April to June. The population densities were negatively correlated with PM2.5, PM10, and O3 concentrations (weakly with PM2.5 and PM10 but strongly with O3). On the other hand, the AQMS heights showed no significant correlation with the pollutant concentrations, implying that further studies on the relationship between terrain heights and pollutant concentrations should be accompanied.

  • We surveyed the occurrence of Rice stripe virus (RSV) disease in 672 fields from 29 rice representative area in July 2012 as nationwide survey for RSV occurrence since 2008. We confirmed occurrence of virus disease in 18 areas, in west coast region including Secheon, Taean, Buwan and Cheorwon. RSV incidence rates of plant in Sacheon and Buan were less than 0.01% and 0.15%, respectively, showing similar rate with the nationwide survey carried out in 2008, whereas incidence rate of field declined from 19.9% in 2008 to 4.9% in 2012. Earlier, RSV occurred largely across the southern region of Korea. In 2001, RSV disease was found in Gangwha and Gyeonggi-do, the northern region of Korea. In 2007, RSV appeared in west coast; Buan in Jeollabuk-do and Seocheon in Choongnam-do. After migration of the vector, small brown plant hopper, from China in 2009, RSV is becoming a pandemic.

  • In this study, the systems and standards for temporary equipment and materials established in domestic and foreign countries are examined to provide improvement schemes and to insure their safety. Statistical analyses of the data obtained from the internet and/or field visit surveys of employees working in manufacturing, leasing, and construction companies related to temporary equipment and materials and improvement schemes were conducted to evaluate the implementation of a safety certification system for currently used temporary equipment and materials. This safety certification system has been enforced since 2009, but the number of accidents at construction sites, which are reported by the 'serious accident cases and measures in construction sites' group of the Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency (KOSHA), has increased. The respondents' answers regarding the suitability of the items, which are required for the safety certification of the equipment and materials, were 'yes (36%)', 'no (30%)', and 'unknown (35%)'. Less than half of the answers regarding the current system were positive and most of the respondents answered that the current system does not reflect the evolution of the construction environment. A system is needed to approve items certified in foreign countries and newly developed materials and items, in addition to the (automatic) registration for the reuse of temporary equipment and materials, and improvements are needed in their safety. In this study, after examining the size and practicability of the items requiring approval from the current system, the certification methods are reevaluated and improvement schemes are provided for the system.

  • Neulgeori prehistoric site is located at Joong-ri Kwanin-myon Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, where lots of stone artefacts were excavated. We investigated the petrological features of the artefacts through petrographical observation and modal analysis. In addition we estimated the provenance of the artefacts by means of the geological survey. The twelve stone artefacts used in this study are identified as ash tuff, lapilli tuff, granite porphyry, andesite and diorite porphyry. Various rocks were used for making flakes, whereas blades and debris were from the tuffaceous rocks. Lapilli tuff is considered to have been delivered from the Dongmakgol tuff in the Cheolwon basin, granite porphyry from the Cretaceous granite porphyry stocks cropped out at the southeastern Oksan-ri and eastern Yeoncheon areas. Andesite artefact would have been originated from the outcrops located at the northern part of the site, and diorite porphyry artefact from the southern part of the site. The stone artefacts investigated are estimated to have been transported from the area within 15 kilometers from the site.

  • This research proposes the direction for the assessment of local government infrastructure vulnerabilities relating to climate change driven flood and analyzes the assessment result. In this research, the local government infrastructures are evaluated by three indices such as exposure, infrastructure sensitivity, adaptive capacity and each index is calculated by selected alternative variable. Climate change scenario(A1B) developed on National Institute of Environmental Research is used to calculate present and future(2020, 2050, 2100s) exposure. As the result of infrastructure vulnerability assessment on present, the infrastructures in Seoul, Northern Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, coastal area of Gyeongsangnam-do are vulnerable to flooding. For future, although the spatial pattern of flooding vulnerable infrastructure are similar, the flooding vulnerabilities of infrastructure in Gyeonggido and Ganwon-do would be increased as close to 2100s. It is expected that this research can be utilized as the preliminary analysis for climate change adaptation in local government infrastructure because this research propose the method for the assessment of local government infrastructure vulnerability relating to climate change driven flood and the result such as a trend of infrastructure vulnerability to flooding and the level of contribution of each index and alternative variable.

  • Brachydiplax chalybea flavovittata, a climate-sensitive biological indicator species, was first observed and recorded at Jeju Island in Korea in 2010. Overwintering was recently confirmed in the Yeongsan River area. This study was aimed to predict the potential distribution patterns for the larvae of B. chalybea flavovittata and to understand its ecological characteristics as well as changes of population under global climate change circumstances. Data was collected both from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and by field surveys from May 2019 to May 2023. We used for the distribution model among downloaded 19 variables from the WorldClim database. MaxEnt model was adopted for the prediction of potential and future distribution for B. chalybea flavovittata. Larval distribution ranged within a region delimited by northern latitude from Jeju-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (33.318096°) to Yeoju-si, Gyeonggi-do (37.366734°) and eastern longitude from Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do (126.054925°) to Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do (129.016472°). M type (permanent rivers, streams and creeks) wetlands were the most common habitat based on the Ramsar's wetland classification system, followed by Tp type (permanent freshwater marshes and pools) (45.8%) and F type (estuarine waters) (4.2%). MaxEnt model presented that potential distribution with high inhabiting probability included Ulsan and Daegu Metropolitan City in addition to the currently discovered habitats. Applying to the future scenarios by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it was predicted that the possible distribution area would expand in the 2050s and 2090s, covering the southern and western coastal regions, the southern Daegu metropolitan area and the eastern coastal regions in the near future. This study suggests that B. chalybea flavovittata can be used as an effective indicator species for climate changes with a monitoring of their distribution ranges. Our findings will also help to provide basic information on the conservation and management of co-existing native species.
