  • When the transverse bed slope ($S_t$) in channel bend is more than 0.1, it may produce undesirable results on the bed topography of the cross section. The linear relationship for $S_t$ results in zero or negative flow depths at the shallow $S_t$de of the cross section (i.e., inner bank). The exponential relationship for $S_t$ results in excessive flow depths at the deep side of the cross section (i.e., outer bank). This problem can be solved by combining the best features of both relationships described above. From the study, the linear relationship can be applied for the deep $S_t$de of the cross section. But the exponential relationship is suitable for the shallow side. Therefore, the new relationship of $S_t$ is clarified mathematically. A new mathematical model for bed topography is developed herein which takes accounts of the phase lag and the influence of the width to depth ratio. This model is used to analyze two sets of data: one from laboratory channel and the other from natural channel. A good agreement is found between the observed and the calculated bed topography based on the analysis of two sets of data.

  • Estimation of snow depth using optical image is conducted by using correlation with Snow Cover Fraction (SCF). Various algorithms have been proposed for the estimation of snow cover fraction based on Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI). In this study we tested linear, quadratic, and exponential equations for the generation of snow cover fraction maps using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua satellite in order to evaluate their applicability to the complex terrain of South Korea and to search for improvements to the estimation of snow depth on this landscape. The results were validated by comparison with in-situ snowfall data from weather stations, with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) calculated as 3.43, 2.37, and 3.99 cm for the linear, quadratic, and exponential approaches, respectively. Although quadratic results showed the best RMSE, this was due to the limitations of the data used in the study; there are few number of in-situ data recorded on the station at the time of image acquisition and even the data is mostly recorded on low snowfall. So, we conclude that linear-based algorithms are better suited for use in South Korea. However, in the case of using the linear equation, the SCF with a negative value can be calculated, so it should be corrected. Since the coefficients of the equation are not optimized for this area, further regression analysis is needed. In addition, if more variables such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land cover, etc. are considered, it could be possible that estimation of national-scale snow depth with higher accuracy.

  • In this paper, a continuous-time risk process in an insurance business is considered, where the premium rate is constant and the claim process forms a compound Poisson process. We say that a ruin occurs if the surplus of the risk process becomes negative. It is practically impossible to calculate analytically the ruin probability because the theoretical formula of the ruin probability contains the recursive convolutions and infinite sum. Hence, many authors have suggested approximation formulas of the ruin probability. We introduce a new approximation formula of the ruin probability which extends the well-known De Vylder's and exponential approximation formulas. We compare our approximation formula with the existing ones and show numerically that our approximation formula gives closer values to the true ruin probability in most cases.

  • A study was carried out to find out the relationship between arginine vasopressin (AVP) release and plasma osmolality in 15 young men (age: 21.4 yr). After an overnight fasting, wale. (20 ml/kg) was imbibed, and venous blood and urine samples were collected every 30 min for 90 min. then 5% saline was infused (0.06 ml/min/kg) for 120 min. AVP was extracted on Sep-Pak column and measured by radioimmunoassay. Under basal condition, plasma osmolality (pOsm), AVP (pAVP) and aldosterone (pAldo) levels were 286.5 mOsm/kg, 1.1 pg/ml, and 140 pg/ml, respectively. pAVP became undetectable during maximum water diuresis, and increased in response to hypertonic saline infusion. pAVP level began to increase when pOsm was above 280 mOsm/kg. Changes in urinary AVP excretion (uAVP) was parallel to pAVP levels. The fall in pAVP was followed by a decrease in uAVP, uOsm and an increase in free water clearance, while the later rise in pAVP was followed by an increase in uAVP, uOsm and a decrease in free water clearance. When pooling all data together, relationships between pAVP and pOsm, and uAVP and uOsm were best expressed by an exponential relationship (r=0.78, 0.86, respectively). pAldo level decreased to 71 pg/ml after water ingestion, and decreased further to 30 pg/ml 2 hr after 5% saline infusion. Even at the same pNa, pAldo level during dehydration state was significantly higher than during hydration state. Negative exponential relation (r=-0.59) was observed between pAldo and pNa. Response to change in body fluid volume was greater in aldosterone than in AVP release.

  • The kinetics of the thermal-oxidative decomposition of waste polyurethane (PU) according to oxygen concentration has been studied using a non-isothermal thermogravimetric technique at several heating rates from 10 to $50^{\circ}C/min$. A kinetic model accounting for the effects of the oxygen concentration by the differential and integral method based on Arrhenius equation was proposed to describe the thermal-oxidative decomposition of waste PU. To obtain the information on the kinetic parameters such as activation energy, reaction order, and pre-exponential factor, the thermogravimetric analysis curves and its derivatives have been analyzed using the kinetic analysis method proposed in this work. From this work, it was found that reaction orders for oxygen concentration had a negative sign, and activation energy decreased as the oxygen concentration increased. It was also found that the kinetic parameters obtained from the integral method using the single heating rate experiments varied with heating rates. Therefore, it is thought that the differential method using the multiple heating rate experiments more effectively represents the thermal-oxidative decomposition of waste polyurethane.

  • In this work, a junctionless transistor with different film thickness of amorphous InGaZnO has been fabricated and it's instability has been analyzed with different film thickness under positive and negative gate stress as well as light illumination. It was found that the threshold voltage shift and the variation of drain current have been increased with decrease of film thickness under the condition of gate stress and light illumination. The reasons for the observed results have been explained by stretched-exponential model and device simulation. Due to the reduced carrier trapping time with decrease of film thickness, electrons and holes can be activated easily. Due to the increase of vertical channel electric field reaching the back interface with decrease of film thickness, more electrons and holes can be accumulated in back interface. When one decides the film thickness for the fabrication of junctionless transistor, the more significant device instability with decrease of film thickness should be consdered.

  • To determine the adequate levels of light intensity and $CO_2$ concentration for mango grown in greenhouses, quantitative measurements of photosynthetic rates at various leaf positions in the tree are required. The objective of this study was to develop two-variable leaf photosynthetic models of Irwin mango (Mangifera indica L. cv. Irwin) using light intensity and $CO_2$ concentration at different leaf positions. Leaf photosynthetic rates at different positions (top, middle, and bottom) were measured by a leaf photosynthesis analyzer at light intensities (0, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 600, and $800{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) with $CO_2$ concentrations (100, 400, 800, 1200, and $1600{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$). The two-variable model consisted of the two leaf photosynthetic models expressed as negative exponential functions for light intensity and $CO_2$ concentrations, respectively. The photosynthetic rates of top leaves were saturated at a light intensity of $400{\mu}mol{\cdot}^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, while those of middle and bottom leaves saturated at $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. The leaf photosynthetic rates did not reach the saturation point at a $CO_2$ concentration of $1600imolmol^{-1}$. In validation of the model, the estimated photosynthetic rates at top and bottom leaves showed better agreements with the measured ones than the middle leaves. It is expected that the optimal conditions of light intensity and $CO_2$ concentration can be determined for maximizing photosynthetic rates of Irwin mango grown in greenhouses by using the two-variable model.

  • The properties of fracture system on road-cut slopes along the Busan-Ulsan express way under construction are investigated and analyzed. Fracture spacing distributions show log-normal form with extension fractures and negative exponential form with shear fractures. Straight line segments in log-log plots of cumulative fracture length indicate a power-law scaling with exponents of -1.13 in site 1, -1.01 in site 2 and -1.52 in site 3. It is likely that the stability and strength of rock mass are the lowest in site 1 as judged from the analyses of spacing, density and inter-section of fractures in three sites. In contrast, the highest efficiency of the fracture network for conducting fluid flow is seen in site 3 where the largest cluster occupies 73% through the window map. Based on the field survey data, this study modified weighting values of the RMR system using a multiple regression analysis method. The analysis result suggests a modified weighting values of the RMR parameters as follows; 18 for the intact strength of rock; 61 for RQD; 2 for spacing of discontinuities; 2 for the condition of discontinuities; and 17 for ground water.

  • The purpose of this study is to empirically compare statistical models for pre-service teachers' help networks. We identified similarities and differences based on the results of the binary and valued ERGM. Research questions are as follows: First, what are the similarities of factors influencing the binary/valued help network for pre-service teachers? Second, what are differences of factors influencing the binary/valued help network for pre-service teachers? We measured 42 pre-service teachers with focus on their help and friend networks, happiness, and personal characteristics. Results indicated that, first, the similar factors influencing the binary and valued help network of pre-service teachers were local dependencies (reciprocity, transitivity), similarity (major, gender), activity (early childhood education, negative emotion), popularity (early childhood education) and multiplicity (friend network). Second, the difference between factors affecting pre-service teacher's binary and valued help network was the effect of activity (physical education) and popularity (GPA, negative emotion). Based on these findings, we presented implications.
