Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is the major causative bacteria in dental caries. Xylitol is effective anticarious natural sugar substitute by inhibiting the virulence of S. mutans. However, long-term xylitol consumption leads to the emergence of the xylitol-resistant (XR) strains which means xylitol is no more inhibited their growth. We therefore confirmed the general characteristics and the virulence factors of the xylitol-sensitive (XS) and XR S. mutans for different concentrations of xylitol. S. mutans KCTC 3065 was maintained in TYE medium containing 0.4% glucose with 1% xylitol during 30 days at $37^{\circ}C$, 10% $CO_2$ to form XR strain. The strains were transferred to new medium every 24 hr and the same procedures without xylitol were repeated for the formation of XS S. mutans. Both XS and XR were cultured in different concentrations of xylitol (0%, 0.1% and 1%) then, cell growth, acid production and mRNA expression of gtf genes were analyzed. Xylitol reduced the cell growth of XS S. mutans in dose-dependent manner, but not reduced that of XR. Xylitol inhibited acid production of XS in dose-dependent manner, but not inhibited that of XR. Xylitol reduced the gtfB and gtfD mRNA expression of XS S. mutans which genes synthesized soluble and insoluble extracellular polysaccharides, but not reduced that of XR. These results indicate that the virulence of XR S. mutans is different characters of XS strains, which suggests XR strains may have different cariogenicity of XS strains. Further study is needed to explain the mechanism related to extracellular polysaccharide in the XR strains.
Tiger barb (Puntius tetrazona Bleeker, 1855) is a teleost belonging to Cyprinidae. The oogenesis of tiger barb was investigated by light microscope. The ovary was of white and ellipsoidal shape with the major axis 2 cm and the minor axis 1 cm. Cytoplasm of oogonia was basophilic and many nucleoli were located at inside of nuclear membrane. In early stage of primary oocyte, yolk vesicles were distributed only in the marginal area. In secondary oocyte, the egg envelope was formed and yolk vesicles was formed in the cytoplasm. The basophilic substance of cytoplasm was changed to acidic. In case of matured egg, thickness of egg envelope and size of egg were increased. The yolk vesicles were changed to yolk mass in accordance with development. Also, there is not the formation of oil droplets in cytoplasm. In conclusion, the oogenesis of tiger barb was characterized by the increase in cell size, the formation of yolk, the decrease of basophilic substance in the cytoplasm, and formation of yolk mass.
The present study was performed to analyze the expression of LH genes in the rat ovary. Expression of LH subunit genes in the rat ovary was demonstrated by amplification of ovarian RNA by RT-PCR. The ovarian $LH_\beta$ transcripts contained at least two parts of the published cDNA structure, the pituitary exons 1, 2 and 3 and the part of testicular ex on 1 in the major trancripts form in rat testis. Using RIA, significant amount of LH-like molecules were detected in crude ovarian extracts, and the competition curves with increasing amount of tissue extracts were parallel with those of standard peptide, indicating that the ovarian immunoreactive LH-like material is similar to authentic pituitary LH molecule. The administration of PMSG to immature rats resulted in a sharp decrease of the ovarian LH contents after 24 h post-injection. In conclusion, these findings demonstrate that genes for LH subunits are expressed in the rat ovary, and suggest that LH can playa central role in regulation of female reproduction with both endocrine (by pituitary LH) and auto- and/or para-crine (by ovarian LH) manner.
The study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity of grape seed extracts by measuring acid value, peroxide value (POV), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS value) and electron donating ability by 1,1-dipheny1-2-pycryl hydrazil (DPPH) method. Total phenol content of freeze dried crude solvent extracts increased in the order of ethanol>acetone>hot water. Among extracts, the total phenol content of 70% ethanol extract of grape seed (GSE) was the highest, 51%. Besides the total phenol, the other major components of GSE were crude carbohydrate (29.63%), crude protein (3.38%) and crude lipid (2.84%). The acid values of crude rice bran oil containing GSE or several antioxidants at the concetration of 0.01% were 52.3 for the control, 0.5 for GSE, 2.3 for dibutyl hydroxytoluene (BHT), 45.0 for tertiarybutyl hydroxy quinone (TBHQ), 29.9 for tocopherol and 37.7 for ascorbic acid. The POVs for linoleic acid methyl ester in the presence of 0.01% antioxidants were 1220 meq/kg in control, 55 meq/kg in GSE, 104 meq/kg in BHT, 952 meq/kg in tocopherol and 71 meq/kg in GSE, 37% in BHT, 37% in tocopherol and 52% in ascorbic acid. The electron donating abilities by DPPH in the presence of 0.01% antioxidants were 95.3% in GSE, 75.0% in BHT, 96.3% in tocopherol and 98.2% in ascorbic acid. These results indicated that the antioxidants activities of GSE were significantly higher than those of several antioxidants compared.

There are attempts to utilize Hanji for apparel material, but, the reason that the strength and durability of Hanji decrease to a great extent in the wet condition, restricts the usability of Hanji. In order to improve the resistance against water, Hanji was treated with silicone type water repellent agents. The treatment was carried out by conventional pad-dry-cure method. The optimum treatment condition was obtained by varying the concentration of repellent agent, curing temperature and time. Water repellency was tested by spray rating method. Wet and dry tensile strength, tearing resistance and abrasion resistance were examined after the treatment. Flexural stiffness and wrinkle recovery angles of hanji were also measured. In result, the optimum condition of treatment was at resin concentration of 40g/l, catalyst concentration of 20g/l(half of resin concentration), curing temperature of 160$^{circ}C$, curing time of 120 sec. Flexural stiffness of Hanji was hardly increased and wrinkle recovery angle of Hanji was improved a little by resin treatment. After the treatment, in dry condition, tensile strength and tearing resistance were little changed but abrasion resistance was improved. In wet condition, tensile strength, tearing strength and abrasion resistance were improved.
The effects of green tea on the physicochemical properties of eggs were investigated. One-hundred-and-fifty Isa Brown hens (27 weeks of age) were studied over 10 weeks. Green tea was added to the diet at levels of 4% and 8% w/w. The contents of Ca, K, P, Fe and Mg in eggs increased upon dietary supplementation with green tea powder, and were higher in the yolk than in the white, with the exception of Mg. The increase was greatest for Ca, from 41.0 mg% to 119.8 mg%, in egg white. For Fe, an increase from 3.7 mg% to 12.6 mg% was apparent in egg yolk. When hens consumed the green tea-supplemented diets, average egg weight decreased from 68.8 g to 64.4 g, but the total cholesterol content of egg yolk did not significantly change (control value: 1,899.1 mg% test value: 2,011.3 mg%). In sensory evaluation tests, egg white was similar in terms of astringency and grayness regardless of diet, and egg yolk was yellow-to-orange in color, and rated as fishy or slightly fishy, when green tea diets were administered. Such diets reduced pH values in all of the white, yolk, and white/yolk combination groups. The major fatty acids of egg yolk, constituting more than 90% of total fatty acids, were palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acid. Green tea diets reduced the saturated fatty acid level from 32.0% to 27.4% of total fatty acids, and unsaturated fatty acid levels increased from 68.0% to 72.6% in egg yolk.
Brown patch caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IB occurred on Kentucky bluegrass during late May through early October 2010 at golf course in Gyeongbuk Province, Korea. Disease symptoms on the turfgrass for spring season were leaf blights dying from the leaf tip, which appeared patches of brown color in the field. However, it appeared patches of dark brown color or gray brown color in fall. The fungus (B-7 isolate) of brown patch was isolated from the diseased leaf tissue and cultured on potato-dextrose agar (PDA) for identification. The young hyphae had acute angular branching and few septa and mature hyphal branches showed about 90-degree angles and development of monilioid cells, which were morphologically identical to Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IB reported previously. DNA sequences of ribosomal RNA gene (internal transcribed spacer) of the fungus were homologous with similarity of 99% to those of Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IB isolates in GenBank database, confirming the identity of the causal agent of the disease. Pathogenicity of the fungus was also confirmed on the creeping bentgrass and Kentucky bluegrass by Koch's postulates. This is the first report of brown patch on Kentucky bluegrass caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IB in Korea.
Nutrition counselors in Korea often encounter difficulty in their attempt to change village women's attitudes regarding food taboos which are counter to good eating habits. There are a great many food superstitions which are not due to religious influence, but seem to be related to shape and composition of food. Many expectant mothers superstitiously avoid eating certain foods for fear that they may cause mental or physical abnormality in their babies. As was shown in a previous survey (Mo, 1966)of villages in all provinces except Jeju Island, such superstitions were common among pregnant and lactating mothers. Many food taboos and superstitions based on non-scientific and irrational ideas do exist even in modern society, and are a major obstacle to nutritionally adequate food consumption. A study of food taboos among women of Jeju Island was undertaken from November to December of 1976, these results to be compared as well with those of the previous study. There were 73 items found to be prohibited during pregnancy. Of these, 48.7% were of the deaf group, 17.4% fish, 5.5% eggs, 4.7% cereal, and only 2.2% fruit. Of 252% women respondents, 111 (45% ) abstained from eating chicken, duck, and shark because of the belief that they would cause their babies to be born with gooseflesh or shark skin. Many of them avoided rabbit meat for fear that their babies might be born with harelip. It was also feared that a baby would become disfigured if his mother ate duck, goat, dog meat, chicken or duck eggs, or soup made of bones. A common superstition was that highly spiced or salty foods would cause the fetus to be hairless. Squid and octopus were believed to cause babies to have weak bones, or none at all. Most of these food taboos were associated with fears concerning Physical structure and appearance of unborn babies. Other taboos were associated with fear of undesirable behavioral characteristics. For example, some mothers thought that a baby would pinch or bite the mother's breast during the weaning period, if crab meat were eaten during pregnancy. Unevenly sliced rice cake, loach, snake meat and eel were also believed to cause a baby to be ill-tempered. The findings of this study are remarkably similar to those of the previous study conducted by the authour in 1966. Most of the same food taboos, based on non-scientific and irrational reasons, were found on Jeju Island as on the peninsula, and thor were similarly wide-spread. The results of correlational analysis show that the most significant factors related to prevalence of food taboos, are level of education and religious background. Number of food taboos is correlated with level of education. Also, food taboos are least freqent among the Christian woman. Proper nutrition education should he undertaken in order to encourage intake of protein-rich food, particularly during pregnancy when nutritional needs of mother and fetus are great.

The computational human phantom including major radiation sensitive organs at risk (OARs) can be used in the field of radiotherapy, such as the variation of secondary cancer risks caused by the radiation therapy and the effective dose evaluation in diagnostic radiology. The present study developed a Korean adult female voxel phantom, VKH-Woman, based on serially sectioned color slice images of Korean female cadaver. The height and weight of the developed female voxel phantom are 160 cm and 52.72 kg, respectively that are virtually close to those of reference Korean female (161 cm and 54 kg). The female phantom consists of a total of 39 organs, including 27 organs recommended in the ICRP 103 publication for the effective dose calculations. The female phantom composes of $261{\times}109{\times}825$ voxels (=23,470,425 voxels) and the voxel resolution is $1.976{\times}1.976{\times}2.0619mm^3$ in the x, y, and z directions. The VHK-Woman is provided as both ASCII and Binary data formats to be conveniently implemented in Monte Carlo codes.
