Adolescent' Internet Utilization Status of Dietary Information in Kyungnam (경남일부 청소년의 인터넷 식생활 정보이용에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the utilization status of internet dietary information by gender(boys: 363, girls: 366) in adolescent(middle & high school students). The results were summarized as follows. The internet using frequency of 6-7times per week had 45.0% of subjects and the using time of internet per a time was shown mainly'<2hours(68.5%)'. The main place for internet use was home(79.0%) and favorite search engine was 'Yahoo'(45.7%) and 'Daum'(19.3%). As main purpose using internet were mentioned 'social intercourse'(45.0%) and data search'(24.8%). The organization that offer to reliable internet information was educational institution'(49.4%). The problems in using information site were 'poor information'(26.4%), 'slow connection speed'(22.6%), and 'don't arouse interest'(18.8%). The search experience about dietary information had only 27.9% of subjects and search purpose was 'for homework'(33.3%) and 'for health'(32.0). The satisfaction degree of dietary information was not high. The connection motive to dietary information was mainly 'by site navigation casualty'(55.7%). Only 7.7% of subjects had experience of nutrition counseling using internet, and the motive of nutrition counseling was also 'by site navigation causally'(55.8%). The purpose of counseling was 'for diet'(41.5%) and 'for health problem'(30.2%), and the satisfaction degree of counseling result was very low. As the ask of improvement for counseling site were pointed out 'poor in answer content'(44.8%) and 'lazy answer'(31.0%). The subjects wanted to get the dietary information about 'growth in status'(41.4%), 'diet related skin beauty'(14.6%), the update period less 1 month, and the way of 'free board'(32.3%), 'game'(21.1%) and 'animation'(19.3%) as offer tool. The results of this study showed that although the internet using percent and frequency of subjects was high, they used dietary information very seldom and they are dissatisfied with internet nutritional information. Therefore, the information donor should consider which dietary information was needed and what is the optimal tool for adolescent.

Utilization Status of Internet and Dietary Information of School Children in Gyeonenam and Jeonbuk Areas (경남과 전북지역 초등학교 고학년생의 인터넷 및 식생활정보 이용실태)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the utilization status of internet and dietary information by gender (boys : 442, girls : 461) in school children (total 903). The results were summarized as follows. The most of children used internet regularly (98.1%) and major purpose of using were mentioned as 'game (39.0%)' and 'social intercourse (49.5%)'. The duration of internet use was '< 2hours (80.9%)' They used internet mainly at 'home (88.8%)', and favorite search engines were 'Yahoo (54.2%)' and 'Daum (31.1%)'. The searching experience on dietary information was from only 35.6% of subjects mainly 'for homework (39.6%)' and 'for health (36.9%)'. The satisfaction degree of searched information was 'high (79.5%)'. Dissatisfactory reasons of internet site for dietary information were pointed out to be 'bring little interest (28.9)', 'difficult contents (19.2%)', and 'poor Information (18.2%)'. Only fifteen % of subjects had experience of nutrition counseling using internet, and purpose of counseling was mainly 'for homework (51.4%)' and 'for health problem (24.3%)'. The problems for nutritional counseling site were pointed out to be 'difficult answer content (31.7%)', 'insincere answer (28.6%)'and 'poor answer content (25.4%)'. They acquire information of nutrition and health management mainly through 'internet (43.7%)'. 'Growth and nutrition (28.3%)', 'improvement in studying ability (13.8%)', 'right weight control (13.3%)' and 'cooking (12.8%)'were most frequently asked information, They had a preference for 'game (40.5%)', 'animation (29.9%)' and 'quiz (18.1%)'as loaming method tools. The favorite site color was 'green (51.3%)'The results of this study showed that although the internet use was very high, they used internet to search dietary information very seldom. Therefore, the information donor should find out what is the optimal tool, what kind of dietary information was needed for school children.

The Status of the Utilization Internet and Dietary Information by Elementary School Dietitians in the Gyeongnam and Jeonbuk Areas (평남과 전북지역 초등학교 영양사의 인터넷 및 식생활정보 이용실태)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the status of the utilization of internet and dietary information by elementary school dietitians (total = 201) The results were summarized as follows: All subjects used the internet regularly and the major purpose they mentioned for using it was ″data search″ (72.3%). Those having a frequency of using the internet 6 to 7 times per week were 46.7% of the subjects and the majority indicated the duration of their use of the internet was ″〈 2 hours″ (68.5%). They mainly used the internet at ″school″ (81.8%) , and their favorite search engines were ″Daum″ (41.1%) and ″Yahoo″ (34.7%). They stated that the organization that offered reliable internet information were those ″related to society and organizations″ (36.9%) and ″educational institutions″ (33.8%). Ninety-five percent of the subjects searched for dietary information mainly ″for public affairs″ (80.0%) Their degree of satisfaction when searching for information was high (78.7%). Those dissatisfied with internet sites when searching for dietary information give the following reasons: ″poor information″ (39.1%) and ″slow updates″ (25.4%). They acquired information on nutrition and health management mainly through ″the internet″ (63.6%) The most frequently requested information about public affairs was on ″Materials for nutritional education″ (38.6%) and ″up-to-date nutritional information″ (16.0%) . The desirable update periods for websites was ″1 -3 months″ (51.8%) and ″ < 1 month″ (30.6%), and the favorite site colors were ″blue″ (37.8%) and ″green″ (37.8%). The results of this study showed that, although the internet usage was high, the dietitians were dissatisfied with the information obtained. The Dietary Behavior, Dietary Intakes and Internet Searches Reagarding by Disease in College Students Participating in a Nutrition Education Web Class (인터넷 영양교육 참여 대학생의 질병유무에 따른 식행동, 식이섭취 및 인터넷 사용에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary behavior, dietary intakes and internet searches regarding diseas by college students participating in a nutrition education web class. The study subject were 1184 college students and crosssectional survey was conducted by a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire deal with anthropometric data, diseas, dietary behaviors, dietary intakes, and the use of nutrition information via the internet. The data was analyzed using a SPSS PC program. Disease group was 19.6% (male: 17.1%, female: 21.9%) and non-disease group was 80.4% (male: 82.9%, female: 78.1%) of subjects. As for the kinds of diseas, the male disease group had stomach diseas (15.7%), ozena (15.7%), hepatitis (10.8%) and allergic disease (7.8%), etc, and the female disease group had stomach diseas (32.8%), allergic diseas (12.0%), bronchitis and bronchial asthma (10.4%), anemia (7.2%), and constipation (1.6%), etc. Non-disease group showed significantly higher irregularity of meal time compared to disease group. Also, Disease group showed significantly higher concern about nutrition and health, worse recognition of theirown nutrition and health satus, and made greater efforts to prevention diseas compared to the non-diseas group. In the male subjects, the average intake of Calories, Vitamin $B_2$ and calcium was lower than the Korean RDA and in the female subjects, those of Calories, calcium and Fe were lower than the Korean RDA. Most of the diseas (97%) and the non-disease (98.2%) groups had positive attituds toward the usefulness of internet nutrition information. The disease group showed a higher confidence in the internet nutrition information and recognition of internet information on poisons compared to the non-diseas group. However, this difference was not significant. Therefore. it is necessary to provide sientifically proven nutrition of information via the internet for college students in order to promote healthful lifestyles and to prevent diseas.

A Study on Usage of Dietary Supplements and Related Factors in College Students Attending Web Class via Internet (인터넷 Web 강의 수강 대학생의 특수영양 및 건강보조식품 섭취실태 및 섭취 요인분석)

  • This study was performed to investigate the dietary supplement use and related factors by college students attending in web class. One thousand four hundred college students(male: 632, female: 768) were participated in this study. The questionnaire about dietary supplements use, demographic characteristics, eating behavior, health-related lifestyles, nutrient intake was self-administered and the data were obtained via internet or mail. Dietary supplements were taken by 63.6%(male : 62.2%, female : 64.2%) of subjects. The higher concern about nutrition and health, the higher the incidence of dietary supplements taking was(p < 0.05). Dietary supplement users were satisfied more than non-users about meal served(p < 0.05). Supplements used by most male students were lactic acid beverage, Chinese medicine, geigogi geisoju and multivitamin, Chinese medicine, fiber-processed flood for female students. Most of dietary supplement users answered that the sources of information on supplements were 'friend, family or relatives' and 'TV or radio'. Dietary supplement users were taking significantly more nutrients compared to non-use. Therefore, it may be necessary to provide nutrition information and education which show that balanced diet is the best nutritional strategy for health promotion and diet supplements can be helpful in deficient state nutrients.

A Comparative Study on Acquiring and Using Patterns of Information about Food and Nutrition between Medical Personnel and Non-Medical Personnel (의료인과 비의료인의 인터넷을 통한 식품영양정보 습득 및 활용에 관한 비교 연구)

  • This study was conducted to compare the acquiring and using patterns of information about food and nutrition between medical professional group (MP) and non-medical professionals group (NP). Questionnaire survey were done by total 310 subjects, 149 doctors/nurses (MP) working in Dankook University Hospital and 161 general laborers (NP) in Cheonan area. Personal characteristics, interests in food and nutrition information, and application of information about food and nutrition were asked in questionnaire. Age of MP and NP ranged from 20 to 50. In education level, 59.8% of MP and 46.6% of NP had college degree. The source of information favored the most was the internet website, 53.0% in MP and 51.6% in NP. The most interested information subjects in MP were ‘the diet therapy related to diseases’, and ‘cooking recipes’ in NP. The information was applied to their real life in 55.7% of MP and 58.4% of NP. The percentiles who would like to take part in the education about food and nutrition through internet system were 44.3% of MP and 34.8% of NP. From the results of this study, we concluded that many of MP and NP wanted and needed the education on food and nutrition through internet system. For being the better and more efficient source for the information about food and nutrition, internet websites should provide accurate informations and easier method to find the needed information to the users.

Use and Need of Health and Nutrition Information on the Computer among University Students (대학생의 컴퓨터를 통한 건강 및 영양정보의 이용실태 및 요구도)

  • The use and need of health and nutrition information on the PC communication and internet among university students at Chungbuk area were investigated. The data from 167 students from two different universities were collected and analyzed from March to May, 1998. The results are as follows. 1. Male students were 27.5% and female students were 72.5%. 2. Sixty percent and 74.7% of the students had ever used PC communication and internet, respectively. Higher proportions of male students had experiences in PC communication and internet use than fe male students. The main reasons to use PC communication and internet were 1)to obtain information and knowledge(67.4%) 2)to enjoy(10.5%), 3)to make friends or to talk(5.3%) 3. About 40% of the experienced students of the PC communication of internet obtained health or nutrition information. However, only 25% of the experienced students obtained the nutrition information from the internet. Only 10% of the students agreed that the information from the PC communication and internet was very useful. The reasons not to use the information from the PC communication and internet were 'lack of expertise of the information' and 'long response time'. Many students thought that the information provided through the computer should be improved in terms of variety and applicability to the real situation. 4. Among the 33 topics of the health and nutrition information given on the questionnaire, both male and female students had the greatest interest in stress management. The next topics in which female students had interests were diet for weight control, health problems related to menstration, dietary assessment, and cancer prevention. In male students, dietary assessment, infant nutrition management, hypertention diet were the main interests. On the basis of these results an information system on health and nutrition management during the lifecycle for Korean women will be constructed on the internet.

The Usage of Nutrition Information on Internet by Users' Occupations (인터넷 이용자의 직업에 따른 영양 정보 이용 현황 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the interests in food and nutrition information of internet users, and find the major problems associated with the use of internet information. Of 660 internet users, including 152 professionals, 127 white-collars, 130 college students, and 29 others, 66.4% had accessed the internet to obtain information. Of the subjects, 71% had used the internet to obtain nutrition information, 91.3% of which answered that they would keep using the internet for this purpose. The area of greatest interest and need of the professional users, in relation to nutrition information from the internet, was 'recipe and menu' (p<0.001). Whereas, the white-collars were most interested in nutrition information for 'diet for weight control' and 'diet'(p<0.001). Students were most interested in nutrition information related to 'diet' and 'diet for weight control'(p<0.001). Due to the variety of interests and applications of different users, there is a need to develop specialized nutrition information sites for internet users to easily obtain reliable and valuable information.

  • This research was investigated the problem of power blogs related to cooking through the investigation of usage and satisfaction of those blogs as new information media in internet community. As a result, most users had were received cooking information through internet and 85.7% of those users have experienced power blogs related to cooking. The most frequent access methods were via search engines. What users are received from power blogs related to cooking are cooking recipes. What did they want the most from those blogs are accurate recipes for everyday meal. According to this opinion poll, majority of respondents were collected cooking information through internet and experience more and more power blogs related to cooking, whereas users lost their satisfaction and belief from power blogs when there was a lack of enough information on power blogs, an inaccuracy of the information from the power blogs, or an extraordinary recipes. To improve power blogs related to cooking, not only various cooking information but also everyday cooking recipes were required, but power bloggers should also consider everyday cooking materials and recipes with simple cooking utensils.

The Usage of Diet and Nutritional Information on the Internet by Users' Age (이용자의 연령에 따른 인터넷 상의 식생활 및 영양 정보 이용)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a web site providing sound and specific diet and nutritional information for internet users in different age groups to protect themselves from junk nutritional information. Among 660 internal users (436 in their 20s, 154 in their 30s, and 63 in their 40s), 66.4% had access to a computer to get nutritional information. Almost 38% of those in their 20s searched in the internet using the term 'diet', whereas 25.9% of those in their 30s and 27.1% of those in their 40s searched using 'cooking and recipe'(p<0.001). The main purpose of using nutritional information on the internet of the subjects was 'to take care of health'(p<0.001). Seventy percent of subjects answered 'so-so' for the satisfaction about the content of nutritional information that was self-explored. Contents related to nutritional information which needed to be improved was 'sound information' for 47.2% of those in their 30s, 'convenience for the application to daily life' for 51.1% of those in their 20s, and 39.6% of those in their 40s. A specialized nutritional information site must to be developed for users to gain access to reliable and valuable information without difficulty, as the variety of the interested area and application area for each user.
