The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between family of origin and youth transitioning from out-of-home care. Data were collected from six youths transitioning from out-of-home care and were analyzed using the phenomenological approach. The results of this study were as follows. Four categories and twelve subcategories were drawn from the meaning units. The four categories were 'chaos in separation', 're-established relations but with distance', 'completely ended relationships with the family of origin', and 'redrawing family boundaries'. First, the participants who were separated from their parents due to poverty or divorce reunited with their parents, and they appeared to continue their relationships with the family of origin after transitioning from out-of-home care. The youth were receiving various forms of support from their parents in order to be independent, and they were experiencing stable independence through this support. Second, the participants who were separated from their parents due to serious child abuse or parental death had broken relationships with their parents. The youth were independent and relied on new alternative relationships that were not with the family of origin, but they experienced somewhat unstable self-reliance. In short, participants' relationships with families of origin in this study can be defined as a tight rope between love and hate. Based on these results, child welfare practice and policy implications were discussed to help out-of-home care youth's relationship with their family of origin.

The data were collected from 385 male and female high school students in Seoul through the questionnaire method. The major result of the study were as follows: 1. About sixty percents of the respondents came from middle-class families who were being brought up by their parents. 2. Analysis of data revealed that degrees of relationship of the respondents with their parents and peer were higher than moderate, while the degrees of relationship with teacher was found to be moderate. 3. The adolescent' overall level of school adjustment was found to be at a moderate level. 4. The adolescents' levels of school adjustment were differed by birth order, father's occupations, family structures, economic status of the family, grade point average and religion. 5. The stepwise regression analyses yielded the results that relationship with the teacher, relationship with the peer, father's caring, birth order and economic status of family were significant factors in explaining the adolescents' school adjustment. On the base of the results of the study, the following suggestions were made in order to enhance adolescents' school adjustment: 1. Teacher education focused on guidance and counseling should be included in the teacher education and training program. 2. Parents education focused on fatherhood should be more emphasized.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the child's preference attitude for one parent and to analyze the difference in the four variables(sex, age, birth order and maternal employment) and the factors influencing it. To meet this purpose, three kinds of questionnaire for child (school-age/late adolescence) and his parents were used. The data were obtained through 136 pairs(parents and child) and analyzed by chisquare test and Guttman's lambda. The results of this test are summerized as follows. 1. The majority of children prefer mother to father and especially adolescent daughters prefer mother more than sons. 2. The majority of parents answered that their child would prefer mother to father and the correlation coefficient between mother's answer and fathers is .53. But child's actual preference is no related with parent's awareness of being preferred. 3. The majority of parent's answer were consistent with child's preference but the correlation coefficients are very low from the analysis of factors influencing the child's preference. Therefore parents and child must have more communication, concern and expression of love for mutual consistence.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the experience of adult Korean children who are caregivers for parents institutionalized with dementia. Methods: Participants were fourteen adult children caregivers of elders institutionalized with dementia. Data were collected through in-depth unstructured interviews with individual participants from August to November, 2012. Theoretical sampling was used to the point of theoretical saturation. Data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's Grounded Theory Method. Results: From open coding, 67 concepts, 29 sub-categories, and 14 categories were identified. Analysis revealed that the core category of the experience of adult children caring for their parents institutionalized with dementia was 'enduring the role of a prop' consisting of four phases: initial turmoil, exploration, role adjustment, and acclimation. To manage the role of a prop, participants utilized various action/interactional strategies such as overcoming the unfamiliarity, overseeing the nursing home care, and counterbalancing the caring roles. As a result, participants experienced ambivalence towards the existence of parents with dementia, changes in family relationships, altered viewpoint towards nursing homes, and restructuring of life. Conclusion: In-depth understanding of the experience will guide nurses to promote effective interventions in order to better support the Korean family caregivers of parents institutionalized with dementia.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current status of dietary habits and dietary life competency of elementary school parents, who are influential to the dietary life of their children and family. A survey was conducted with 362 elementary school parents living in Seoul and Gyeonggi province by using a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 53 questions on dietary habits, dietary life competency, home cooking frequency, and dietary education needs. The results were as follows: The scores of dietary habits and dietary life competency were 76.35 and 74.51 out of 100, respectively, suggesting a need for improvement. Parents with higher monthly income, demonstrated higher scores of both dietary habits and dietary life competency (p<0.001). As expected, female parents showed higher scores of dietary life competency than male parents (p<0.01). there was also a close relationship between the scores of dietary habits and dietary life competency (r=0.58). The parents with high scores for dietary habits and dietary life competency showed a significantly higher frequency of home cooking (p<0.001) compared to medium- or low-scored parents. Most parents answered that dietary education need to be started earlier, and that their main source of dietary life information was mass media. They also showed a preference for real experience and practice for dietary education. The above results showed that there is a close relationship between dietary habits and dietary life competency, and suggest that continuous education is necessary to improve the dietary habits and dietary life competency of elementary school parents. Because monthly income appeared to be the most influential socioeconomic factor for the parents' dietary habits and dietary life competency, continuous efforts on dietary education are necessary to reduce the score gaps in these categories.
Objective: The purpose is to verify that whether there are significant correlation between parent-teacher cooperation, quality of home environment, and mathematical interaction of parents and cognitive development of 3-year-olds, and the quality of home environment and mathematical interaction mediate the relationship between the parent-teacher cooperation and the cognitive development. Methods: A test was performed on 110 3-year-olds enrolledin a daycare center located in city S, and a questionnaire survey was conducted on their parents. We analyzed our data using SPSS WIN 21.0 and pearson's correlation, tested the mediating effect using regression, and used the Sobel test to check significance of the mediating effect. Results: Cognitive development of 3-year-olds was correlated with the parent- teacher cooperation, the quality of home environment, and mathematical interaction of parents. The quality of home environment showed complete mediating effect on the relationship between the parent-teacher cooperation and the cognitive development, and the mathematical interaction showed complete mediating effect on the relationship between the parent-teacher cooperation and the cognitive development. Conclusion/Implications: The parent-teacher cooperation indirectly predicts the cognitive development through the quality of home environment and the mathematical interaction. This research can contribute to the development of the family- institution connection program to facilitate the parent-teacher cooperation.

The intergenerational transfer between parents and children is a major concern due to low birth rates and aging society of Korea. This study investigated the influences of children's support for parent regarding parents' decision to bequest, including the influences of parental characteristics, household-related factors, and characteristics of children. The data are the 5th wave of KReIS, a sample of 1,834 married household heads(HHs), which were classified into 142 baby boomers (1955-1963), 534 post-liberation HHs (1945-1954), and 1,158 Japanese-era HHs (-1945). The results were as follows: First, 49.3% of baby boomer HHs, 59.2% of post-liberation HHs, and 59.1% of Japanese-era HHs, were willing to make bequest decision. Second, in the baby boomer HHs, although the children's contact with their parents represented an emotional resource transfer, a child's economic resource transfer to his/her parents did not affect the parents' bequest decisions. However, in the post- liberation HHs, children's contact with parents, and economic resource transfers were significant variables. In addition, in the Japanese-era HHs, only children's contact with their parents was a significant variable. Third, in the baby boomer HHs, the variables that influenced parents' bequest decisions were household financial assets and having a daughter rather than having son and daughter. However, the variables that heavily influenced bequest decisions of the post-liberation HHs were the presence of a spouse, home ownership, household expenditures, and satisfaction of relationships with children. In the Japanese-era HHs, the variables that significantly affected parents' bequest decisions were home ownership, household expenditures, and household financial assets.
