Protective Effect of Sachungwhan against CCl4-induced Hepatotoxicity

  • Sachungwhan reduced hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride($CCl_4$). Improved liver function was observed by measuring the activities of aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), alkaline phosphatase(ALP), blood urea nitrogen(BUN), creatinine(CRE), total cholesterol(TCHO), triglyceride(TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-CHO), high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-CHO), total protein(TP), albumin(ALB) and total bilirubin(BIL) in serum. Hepatic parameters monitored were levels of cholesterol(CHO), triglyceride(TG), malondialdehyde(MDA), content of cytochrome P450(CYP), level of glutathione(GSH), and activities of NADPH-CYP reductase, superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAT), glutathione S-transferase(GST), glutathione reductase(GR), glutathione peroxidase(GPx). The histopathological examination showed that the treatment of Sachungwhan relieved the ballooning degeneration of hepatocytes which had been generated by $CCl_4$. The results suggested that hepatoprotective effects of Sachungwhan possibly are due to their promising antioxidative activity.

  • ATSC 3.0 is a next-generation terrestrial broadcasting standard that provides various functions and improved performance compared to the existing ATSC 1.0 High Definition standard. Based on the ATSC 3.0 broadcast system with IP-centric transport and coherence, it can provide personalized and personalized interactive services to TV viewers. However, the broadcasting system still has a structural limitation in that the service is deployed separately from broadcasters who are allocated a specific frequency and is expected to have different spectrum allocation for each market. To overcome this structural limitation and provide improved services compared with the current ATSC 3.0, preliminary studies were conducted to apply the core network concept of a communication network (particularly 5G) to ATSC 3.0 broadcasting. Finally, in february of this year, the ATSC TG3/S43 group for the development of the ATSC 3.0 Broadcast Core Network (BCN) standard was launched. This paper describes the background and current status of BCN standardization by ATSC TG3/S43, and future standardization prospects.

High Temperature Properties of Alumino Silicate Fire Protection Materials Using Fly ash (플라이애쉬 활용 Alumino silicate계 내화마감재의 고온특성)

  • HSC(High Strength Concrete) have superior properties well as improvement in durability compared with normal strength concrete. In spite of durability of HSC, explosive spalling of concrete is serious problem in structure safety. Therefore, Solving methods are required to control the explosive spalling. The properties of concrete are affected by changes of temperatures. Compressive strength and elasticity modulus were degraded depending on a rise of temperatures. Also, change in microstructure and dehydration of concrete subjected to high temperatures. This paper is concerned with change in microstructure and dehydration of the alumino silicate fire protection materials at high temperatures. The testing methods of fire protection materials in high temperature properties are make use of SEM, TG-DSC and XRD. From the experimental test results, influence of high temperatures on microstructure of alumino-silicate fire protection material was identified, including chemical dehydration of C-S-H and CH. The chemical dehydration of CH under various temperatures from to 450 to 600$^{\circ}$C has been measured using the TG-DSC. However, developed alumino silicate fire protection materials showed good stability in high Temperatures. Thus, the results indicate that it is possible to fireproof panels, fire protection of materials.

Effects of d-${\alpha}$-tocopherol supplements on lipid metabolism in a high-fat diet-fed animal model

  • High-fat diet up-regulates either insulin resistance or triglycerides, which is assumed to be related to the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-${\alpha}$ and PPAR-${\gamma}$. The beneficial effects of vitamin E on insulin resistance are well known; however, it is not clear if vitamin E with a high-fat diet alters the expression of PPAR-${\alpha}$ and PPAR-${\gamma}$. We investigated the effects of d-${\alpha}$-tocopherol supplementation on insulin sensitivity, blood lipid profiles, lipid peroxidation, and the expression of PPAR-${\alpha}$ and PPAR-${\gamma}$ in a high-fat (HF) diet-fed male C57BL/6J model of insulin resistance. The animals were given a regular diet (CON; 10% fat), a HF diet containing 45% fat, or a HF diet plus d-${\alpha}$-tocopherol (HF-E) for a period of 20 weeks. The results showed that the HF diet induced insulin resistance and altered the lipid profile, specifically the triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) levels (P < 0.05). In this animal model, supplementation with d-${\alpha}$-tocopherol improved insulin resistance as well as the serum levels of TG and very-low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (VLDL-C) (P < 0.05). Moreover, the treatment decreased the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the serum and liver while increasing hepatic PPAR-${\alpha}$ expression and decreasing PPAR-${\gamma}$ expression. In conclusion, the oral administration of d-${\alpha}$-tocopherol with a high-fat diet had positive effects on insulin resistance, lipid profiles, and oxidative stress through the expression of PPAR-${\alpha}$ and PPAR-${\gamma}$ in a high-fat diet-fed male mice.

Characterization of Gas Permeation Properties of Polyimide Copolymer Membranes (공중합체 폴리이미드를 이용한 기체분리막의 특성평가)

  • We synthesized novel polyimides with high gas permeability and selectivity for application of gas separation membrane. 2,2-bis(3,4-carboxylphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) and two kinds of amines with high permeability and solubility were used to prepare the novel polymide. 2,4,6-Trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamine (DAM) was used to improve gas permeability and 4,4-Methylenedianiline was used to improve the gas selectivity respectively. The polyimide copolymers were synthesized by commercial chemical imidization method using Triethylamine and Acetic anhydride and their average molecular weights were over 100,000 g/mol. The glass temperature (Tg) and the thermal degradation temperature were characterized using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The synthesized copolymers showed high Tg over $300^{\circ}C$ and high thermal degradation temperature over $500^{\circ}C$. The gas permeation properties were measured by time-lag equipment. Although general polyimides showed very low gas permeability, synthesized polyimide copolymer showed high $O_2$ permeability of 10.1 barrer with high $O_2/N_2$ selectivity around 5.3. From this result, we confirm that these membranes have possibility to apply to gas separation membrane.

Effect of Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS Extracts on the Lipid Metabolism (도토리추출물이 흰쥐의 체내 지질대사에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts on lipid metabolism. Sprague-Dawley male rats$(110{\pm}10g)$ were fed on containing normal and high fat diets. They were orally administrated(0.02g/100g B.W.) of Quercus aculissima CARRUTHERS ethylacetate-extract and water-extract at the same time once a day respectively. The rats were sacrificed after 6 weeks of feeding periods. In high fat diet group, liver and heart weight were increased but kidney weight was decreased. Contents of total lipid, triglyceride and phospholipid were increased in high fat diet groups. But the degree of increment was reduced by administration of Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts and water extract was more effective. Significant decrease in serum total lipid content by administration Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts was not due to decrease of triglyceride content but total cholesterol content. Whereas HDL-cholesterol content was significantly decreased in high fat diet group and improved by administration of Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts. Total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol contents in liver were also increased in high fat diet group but phospholipid content was significantly decreased. The results indicate that Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts were effective in preventing hyperlipidemia and water extract was more effective.

  • Self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) technique was used to synthesize the spinel phase of $MgAl_2O_4$ from MgO and Al powder. Thermit reaction products of MgO and Al, The reaction products were heat treated at the temperature $800^{\circ}C$ preheating. Processing factors such as DTA/TG, combustium product and maxium temperature, synthesis of MgO and Al from "$MgO+2Al+3/2O_2$\rightarrow$MgAl_2O_4$". An activation energy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$)-264.8 kcal/mol and reaction of maxium temperature 5634 K was calculated to form a $MgAl_2O_4$ spinel from unreacted materials. Bioactivities of Fermented Rhynchosia nulubilis in Dietary Obese Rats (유도비만 흰쥐에서 발효 서목태가 미치는 생리활성)

  • This study was to examine the lipid metabolism of fermented Rhynchosia nulubilis (FRN) in obese rats. The abnormal content of blood lipids often results in metabolic diseases, such as obesity and hyperlipidemia. Seven weeks female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups and fed high fat diets for 44 days. Also FRN was administered orally for 44 days at 7.5 ml/kg of body weight of rats. The effects of the lipid metabolism were evaluated by total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), glutamic pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) levels in sera. The levels of TC, TG, LDL and GPT in FRN-treated groups were lower than those in obese groups. While HDL levels were significantly increased. These results demonstrated that FRN had improving effects of lipid metabolism in the obese rats, suggesting that FRN would be used as an ingredient of the useful functional products.

  • Thermal decomposition of waste Achyranthes Root (WAR) emitted from its decoction process was investigated using a TG analyzer and a fixed-bed reactor. The WAR had the larger C and fixed carbon content than fresh AR (FAR) due to the extraction of hemicelluloses from FAR during decoction process. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis results also revealed the elimination of hemicellulose by its decoction. Relatively high contents of the cellulose and lignin made high contents of their typical pyrolyzates, such as acids, ketones, furans, and phenols, in the pyrolysis of WAR using the fixed-bed reactor. The increase of pyrolysis temperature from 400 to $500^{\circ}C$ increased yields of oil and gas due to the more effective cracking efficiency of WAR at a higher temperature. The chemical composition of product oil was also changed by applying the higher pyrolysis temperature, which increased the selectivity to furans and phenols.

Lipid and Fatty Acid Composition of Korean Breast Milk and Infant Formula (모유와 유아용 조제분유의 지질 및 지방산 조성)

  • This study was conducted to compare the lipid content and fatty acid composition of the Korean breast milk produced at 1, 2 and 3 months postpartum with the infant formula produced in Korea. The content of total lipids of the breast milk was low compared with the other data of Korean as well as foreign breast milk, and the content tended to reduce during the progress of lactation. The composition of fatty acids of the breast milk was characterized by low saturated fatty acids(SFA) and high $\omega$3 series of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially 20:5 and 22:6, so the P/S and $\omega$6/$\omega$3 rations were high. The formulas had more total lipids, triglycerides(TG) and phospholipids and less cholesterol(CHOL) and free fatty acids than the breast milk. The cholesterol content of the formulas was around 50% of that of the breast milk, so the CHOL/TG ratio was low. Although the formulas varied in fatty acid composition, the formulas had more SFA and $\omega$6 series of PUFA, but less monounsaturated fatty acids and $\omega$3 series of PUFA than the breast milk. This study shows that there are some differences in lipid content and fatty acid composition between breast milk and infant formula. Therefore, further studies needed to investigate the physiological effect of this difference on lipid metabolism of infants.
