One of the biggest changes in 2007 Curriculum Revision is introduction of letter, equation, direct proportion and inverse proportion in fifth and sixth grade of mathematics. The purpose of this study is to provide some implications about teaching-learning method for introduction of letters, teaching and learning activities of equation between the 6th Curriculum and 2007 Curriculum Revision. The below conclusions were drawn from findings obtained in this study. First, the letter and expression were learned in fifth and sixth grade until 6th Curriculum and were learned in seventh grade in middle school of 7th Curriculum. But letter, equation are introduced in 2007 Curriculum Revision again. The overall contents of letter and expression were learned on the 'Relationship' domain in the 6th Curriculum, it were learned on the 'Letter and expression' domain in the 7th Curriculum and is learned on the 'Regularity and problem-solving' domain in the 2007 Curriculum Revision. Second, teaching method of these contents was to promise some definitions at first and then to solve exercises in the 6th Curriculum. But leaning was forced to improve student's problem-solving in the 7th Curriculum. To reduce student's pressure offers at a minimum mathematics terms and to provide problem situations to students who contact daily, it is emphasized on learner's communication in the 2007 Curriculum Revision. We want to be easily connected elementary mathematics and higher mathematics through this study about letter, equation. We recognized how we teach the letter and expression to reduce misconceptions and draw a transition from arithmetic thinking to algebraic thinking and want to be continue of another studies.
This paper examined vocabulary used in elementary mathematics textbooks and workbooks for the grade band of 5~6. This study focused on the adequacy of vocabulary using 9-degree of semantic difficulty. The results of this study showed that most vocabulary in the textbooks and workbooks was adequate for the target grades. In some cases, however, vocabulary that was supposed to be difficult for the fifth and sixth graders was employed in a way that the meaning of such vocabulary was difficult for students to infer in the given context. The most frequent vocabularies in the main activities of the mathematics textbooks included 'method', 'investigate', 'number', 'communicate', and 'represent'. Based on these results, this study provides 5~6 grade textbook writers with implications on what to further consider in dealing with vocabulary in instructional materials.
This study sampled 6,535 grade 11 or 12 students in South Korea using a stratified random sampling method in order to identify the differences in the perception of students on what a good mathematics class is by school class and region. The results showed that four elements of a good mathematics class were significantly different among school classes and regions.
This study analyzed what STEAM elements, except mathematical content, are contained in 2009 revised elementary school 3rd and 4th grade group mathematics textbooks. STEAM elements in the textbooks were examined by grade and by content area in the elementary school mathematics curriculum. According to the results, the difference between 3rd and 4th grade in the number of STEAM elements is almost not visible. Distribution of specific content areas could be seen that the distribution STEAM element is similar to the percentage distribution of the content area. However, the number of STEAM elements are different depending on the type of STEAM. The number of arts element is 448(67.6%) and this elements are seen the most. The number of representative art and cultural art is 344(51.9%) and 104(15.7%), respectively. The number of technology-engineering and science is 160(24.1%) and 55(8.3%), respectively. We need to developed to promote use of science element in next mathematics curriculum.
The 7th national mathematics curriculum was revised in 2007. According to the revision curriculum, new texts and guides are developed and will come into effect for elementary and secondary school in 2009. Some contents are shifted and also newly added at the revision curriculum. This paper analyzed the gap between the revision and the 7th national mathematics curriculum based on the shifts in contents, and investigated on the difficulties that some graders probably will undergo owing to shifting the contents between grades. As a result, several important problems were found in some graders between the revision and the 7th national mathematics curriculum. In particular, some graders could not have a chance to learn some mathematical concepts without another lesson plans. For some graders, special lesson plans and supplementations are required. The brief summary of these supplementations as follows: ⅰ) For entering students in 2005, the supplementations about equations and direct proportion and inverse proportion should be needed at the 6th grade in 2010 or at the 7th grade in 2011. ⅱ) For entering students in 2006, the supplementations about estimations and correspondence should be needed at the 4th grade in 2009 or at the 5th grade in 2010. And the supplementations about the relation of fractions and decimals and the ratio should be needed at the 5th grade in 2010. ⅲ) For entering students in 2007, the supplementations about the addition and subtraction of time using second unit and the addition and subtraction of weight should be needed at the 3th grade in 2009 or at the 4th grade in 2010.
According to the characteristics of elementary school students in favor of playing games, and to their high energy levels and physical growth states, it is fair to say that students can learn mathematics through 'game playing activities.' These activities are considered to intrigue their interest in class and make them feel less stress from the burden of studying mathematics. Mr. Skemp, who had conducted research on 'game activity' with experimental studies relating to elementary mathematics, recommends that math teachers try to give as many activity-oriented classes as possible to students. The method of 'game activity' by Skemp's operation deals with the whole range of mathematical themes. It is believed by other math teachers that this is not a way to substitute free time or just to have fun in class, but an intentionally well-organized way of learning an entire mathematical course during elementary school. In this research, 5th and 6th grade students needing extra classes after school had been exposed to 'ame activity' by Skemp's operation. As a result, we can figure out its influence on their understanding of arithmetic ability, and on the cognitive definition territory in their minds.
This study sets the cut points of affective achievement scores based on the criteria referenced assessment. The modified Angoff method is applied to the standardized mathematics affect inventory which had validity and reliability. The cut points are set for 6 factors i.e. learning directivity, self control, anxiety, interest, cognizing value and confidence. As the results, among percentages of factor that middle school 2nd grade students in Korea achieved, the proportion of cognizing value is the highest. And there are no difference of the proportions as for gender, differentiated instruction, and region.
With a significant role of textbooks in shaping students' opportunities to learn, textbook analysis is essential to reveal these opportunities to learn the concept of area and volume. This research aims to show how the Korean textbooks pace students' learning of area and volume across grades by scrutinizing the textbooks with students' developmental sequences, called learning trajectories. Tasks about area and volume in all Korean elementary textbooks (grade 1 to 6) are coded with the specific developmental stages suggested in learning trajectories. As a result, we find considerable misalignment between the textbooks and the learning trajectories. The textbooks provide opportunities to experience developmental progressions of area and volume later than ages suggested in the learning trajectories. In addition, learning opportunities are significantly concentrated in grade 5 for area and grade 6 for volume with heavy emphases on applying formulas of area or volume. The findings from this research provides important implications concerning design of textbooks as well as improving students' opportunities in the mathematics classrooms.
In Korea, mathematics education of 11-12 grade students has been taken according to the 7th national mathematics curriculum, which was renovated by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development announcement in 1997. The education of probability and statistics has been carried out as a part of this curriculum. We analyze mathematics textbooks-Practical mathematics and Mathematics I- and compare the 7th national mathematics curriculum with the 6th national mathematics curriculum.
This paper focused on three drawbacks exposed in subject matter related to solid figures in elementary school math textbook. First, general solid figure are introduced before rectangular parallelepiped and cube in fifth grade math textbook, and prism and pyramid in sixth grade math textbook are introduced. Second, the process of abstraction from concrete objects to solid figures is insufficient in sixth grade math textbook. Third, some definitions in subject matter related to solid figures are inconsistent and ambiguous. The following four suggestions can be put forward as a conclusion based on these results. First, subject matter in textbooks must be correspond with that in curriculum. Second, it is necessary to inform teachers of range of subject matter through teachers guide book and manual for curriculum definitely. Third, each grade subject matter in math textbooks must be reexamined. Fourth, regular modification of math textbooks must be possible institutionally.
