The experiment was carried out to study the bothanical characteristics of Aconitum charmichaeli Sieb. et Zucc in Korea.The results obtained are summarized as follows ; maximum flowering date was 15 Sep. and plantheight was 65cm, stem diameter was 8.7mm, No. of node was 25 and node of flowering initiation was15th.In flowering, No. of anothers were 52 and No. of flowers were 49.In leaf, length and width was same size, lower leaf size was 2-3 times than upper leaf, lower leafarea was 8.4 times than upper leaf.In tuber, No. of tuber per plant was 8, fresh weight per tuber was 25.4g, total fresh weight per plantwas about 200g.
BACKGROUND: Since the number of crops cultivated in reclaimed land is huge, it is very difficult to quantify the total crop production. Therefore, a non-destructive method for predicting crop production is needed. Salt tolerant root vegetables such as red beets and sugar beet are suitable for cultivation in reclaimed land. If their underground biomass can be predicted, it helps to estimate crop productivity. Objectives of this study are to investigate maximum leaf length and weight of red beet, sugar beet, and turnips grown in reclaimed land, and to determine optimal model with regression analysis for linear and allometric growth models. METHODS AND RESULTS: Maximum leaf length, width, and root fresh weight of red beets, sugar beets, and turnips were measured. Ten linear models and six allometric growth models were selected for estimation of root fresh weight and non-linear regression analysis was conducted. The allometric growth model, which have a variable multiplied by square of maximum leaf length and maximum leaf width, showed highest R2 values of 0.67, 0.70, and 0.49 for red beets, sugar beets, and turnips, respectively. Validation results of the models for red beets and sugar beets showed the R2 values of 0.63 and 0.65, respectively. However, the model for turnips showed the R2 value of 0.48. The allometric growth model was suitable for estimating the root fresh weight of red beets and sugar beets, but the accuracy for turnips was relatively low. CONCLUSION: The regression models established in this study may be useful to estimate the total production of root vegetables cultivated in reclaimed land, and it will be used as a non-destructive method for prediction of crop information.
An investigation was conducted to elucidate the effect of sucrose, germicides and abscisic acid (ABA) in the preservatives on postharvest quality, such as fresh weight, solution uptake, vase life, diameter and thickness of flower, and chlorolhyll of leaf in cut chrysanthemum 'Kyoungsubang`. Fresh weight of cut chrysanthemum was highest in 250mg/L aluminum sulfate [{TEX}$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}${/TEX}]+3% sucrose and 250 mg/L 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS)+ 3% sucrose. Addition of sucrose and germicides inhibited microorganisms growth in solution, and apparently promoted solution uptake. The increased fresh weight seems to attribute to the elevated uptake. Germicide 8-HQS was more effective than {TEX}$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}${/TEX} in the aspect of solution uptake and fresh weight. Treatment of 250 mg/L 8-HQS +3% sucrose showed the longest vase life (24.67±2.52 days) and the lowest rate of leaf chlorosis (or senescence). Addition of {TEX}$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}${/TEX} and sucrose accelerated leaf chlorosis and increased diameter of flower, respectively. Sucrose treatment prolonged the vase life of flowers. Except control and 250 mg/L 8-HQS, content of chlorophyll was rapidly decreased after 6 days at upper, middle and lower leaves in order.
One of the most concerned topics in ecology is the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. However, there are few field studies, carried out in forests, although many studies have been done in controlled experiments in grasslands. In this paper, we describe the relationship pattern between three facets of diversity and productivity at Ratargul Fresh Water Swamp Forest (RFWSF) in Bangladesh, which is the only remaining fresh water swamp forest of the country. Sixty sample plots were selected from RFWSF and included six functional traits including leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), tree height, bark thickness and wood density. In analyzing TD, we used Shannon diversity and richness indices, functional diversity was measured by Rao's quadratic entropy (Rao 1982) and Faith's (1992) index was used for phylogenetic diversity (PD). It was found that, TD, FD and PD were positively related with productivity (basal area) due to resource use complementarity but surprisingly the best predictor of tree productivity was FD. The results contribute to the understanding the effects of biodiversity loss and it is essential for conservation decision-making and policy-making of Ratargul Fresh Water Swamp Forest.

The experiment was carried out to analyze the inhibition effect of plant pathogenic fungi and growth promotion activity induced by the bacterial strains isolated from peatmoss. Among the isolated bacterial strains, B10-2, B10-4, B10-5 and B10-6 which showed more than 30% inhibition rate against Botrytis cinerea and Rhizoctonia solani in vitro, were further analyzed in the greenhouse for the growth promotion activity on lettuce (Lactuca sativa), pak-choi (Brassica compestris L. ssp. chinensis) and Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis). The results showed the treatment of B10-4 on lettuce showed the highest growth promotion activity with the leaf area ($169.17cm^2$), fresh weight (leaf: 40.29 g, root: 8.80 g)and dry weight (leaf: 11.24 g, root: 4.17 g), which was about two folds as compared to control. On pak-choi, the growth promotion rate was the highest with the leaf area of $112.87cm^2$, leaf fresh weight of 60.70 g, root fresh weight of 3.37 g, leaf dry weight of 14.34 g, and root dry weight of 1.90 g. As a result of treatment of B10-13 on chinese cabbage, the growth promotion rate was the highest with the leaf area ($293.56cm^2$), fresh weight (leaf: 113.67 g, root: 2.40 g) and dry weight (leaf: 6.03 g, root: 0.53 g). The production of Indole Acetic Acid (IAA) and Indole-3-Butylic Acid (IBA) were also analyzed in these bacterial isolates. The IAA and IBA analyses were carried out in all bacterial isolates each day within the 5 days of incubation period. The highest production of IAA was observed with $112.57{\mu}g/mg$ protein in B10-4 after 3 days of incubation and IBA production was the highest in B10-2 with $58.71{\mu}g/mg$ protein after 2 days of incubation. Also, phosphate solubilizing activity was expressed significantly in B10-13 in comparison to that of other bacterial isolates. Bacterial identification showed that B10-2 was Bacillaceae bacterium and B10-5 was Bacillus cereus, B10-4 and B10-6 were Bacillus sp. and B-13 was Staphylococcus sp. by ITS sequence.
Recently, due to environmental and toxicity issues, there has been increasing attention on research regarding natural products that can reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. Wood extracts derived from the biorefining process contain various fertilizer ingredients. HPLC analysis revealed that wood extract contains approximately 5.2% hemicellulosic sugar. The growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) upon treatment with wood extract (extract obtained from steam-exploded pine) or water-soluble fertilizers containing different nutrients was analyzed in this study. After two weeks, the growth characteristics of lettuce as affected by wood extract or water-soluble fertilizers were significantly different. The effect of water-soluble fertilizers containing ascorbic acid, magnesium sulfate, citric acid, potassium nitrate, amino acids, or seaweed extract was less desirable than that of wood extracts regarding plant height (18.6 cm), number of leaves (10), leaf length (14.1 cm), shoot fresh wight (9.8 g/plant), root fresh weight (0.8 g/plant) and shoot dry weight (0.6 g/plant). The plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, shoot fresh wight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight of water-soluble fertilizers containing wood extract were significantly different compared to the control (plant height :13.5 cm, number of leaves : 7, leaf length : 9.4 cm, shoot fresh wight : 5.3 g/plant, root fresh weight : 0.7 g/plant, shoot dry weight : 0.4 g/plant, root dry weight : 0.07 g/plant). From these results, it was concluded that wood extract can be used as a potential water-soluble fertilizer to increase the yield of leafy vegetables.
This study was conducted to investigate spoilage bacteria on organic and conventional fresh produce in Korea. Three samples (perilla leaf, cabbage, and romaine lettuce) of organic and conventional fresh produce were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 14 days and examined for spoilage bacteria on TSA. Isolated bacteria from organic and conventional fresh produces were identified using 16S rRNA sequencing method. Population of total aerobic bacteria on conventional perilla leaf, cabbage, and romaine lettuce were 7.59, 7.01, and $5.84{\log}_{10}CFU/g$, and populations of total aerobic bacteria were 6.72, 6.15, and $5.85{\log}_{10}CFU/g$, for organic perilla leaf, cabbage, and romaine lettuce, respectively. Major spoilage bacteria of organic and conventional fresh produces were similar however their levels were little different. For example, a major spoilage bacterium resulting the highest level on conventional perilla leaf was Stenotrophomonas maltophilia whereas that was Microbacterium sp. for organic produce. From these results, microflora or spoilage microorganism could be different depending on their cultivation types as conventional or organic produces and this information might be used for developing effective preservation method for different types of fresh produce.
A quicker method was developed for foliar analysis in diagnosis of nitrogen in apple trees based on multivariate calibration procedure using partial least squares regression (PLSR) and principal component regression (PCR) to establish the relationship between reflectance spectra in the near infrared region and nitrogen content of fresh- and dry-leaf. Several spectral pre-processing methods such as smoothing, mean normalization, multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) and derivatives were used to improve the robustness and performance of the calibration models. Norris first derivative with a seven point segment and a gap of six points on MSC gave the best result of partial least squares-1 PLS-1) model for dry-leaf samples with root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) equal to $0.699g\;kg^{-1}$, and that the Savitzky-Golay first derivate with a seven point convolution and a quadratic polynomial on MSC gave the best results of PLS-1 model for fresh-samples with RMSEP of $1.202g\;kg^{-1}$. The best PCR model was obtained with Savitzky-Golay first derivative using a seven point convolution and a quadratic polynomial on mean normalization for dry leaf samples with RMSEP of $0.553g\;kg^{-1}$, and obtained with the Savitzky-Golay first derivate using a seven point convolution and a quadratic polynomial for fresh samples with RMSEP of $1.047g\;kg^{-1}$. The results indicate that nitrogen can be determined by the near infrared reflectance (NIR) technology for fresh- and dry-leaf of apple.

In order to determine the optimum planting density of Perilla frutescens which is suitable for the southern part of Korea, agronomic characters, yield of fresh stem, leaf and seed, and yield components were investigated grown in 1985 and 1986 at Mokpo Branch Station of Crop Experiment Station. The heading date was Aug. $14{\sim}15$ and the blooming period was Aug. $19{\sim}21$ regardless of the difference of plant density, but the longest stem length was 135cm in the plant density of $70{\time}40cm$ and the stem length in the plant density of $80{\time}40cm$ was 134cm. The quantity of fresh weight of stem and leaf and fresh weight of seed was high as 531kg/l0a in the plant density of $80{\time}40cm$. The positive correlation such as $0.7315^*,\;0.9024^{**}\;and\;0.7425^*$ were found between stem length and fresh weight of stem and leaf, stem length and fresh weight of seed, fresh weight of stem and leaf and fresh weight of seed and so high significance was recongnized. In the verification of significance of row spacing, the disperse of the stem length was $55.67^{**}$, that of fresh weight of stem and leaf is $268.50^*$, theat of fresh weight of seed was $16.00^{**}$ and high significance was recognized. In the verification of significance of intrarow spacing, the diperse of stem length was $54.21^{**}$, that of fresh weight of stem and leaf was $2,582.00^{**}$, that of fresh weight of seed was $48.00^{**}$ and then high significance was recognized. Accordingly, the proper plant density of perilla frutescens was 80cm of row $spacing{\time}40cm$ of intrarow spacing.
This study investigates the optimal application of perilla leaves to fresh noodles in terms of a variety of beneficial effects and functions such as the anti-microbial function of the leaves. First, we measured the water contents of the fresh noodles and found that the ones added with 7% lyophilized perilla leaf extract showed the maximum water contents whereas the control noodles without perilla leaf extract the minimum. Increasing amount of raw perilla leaf extract or lysophilzed perilla leaves in the fresh noodles elevated the L value and significantly reduced the A value. The mass and volume of the fresh noodles were gradually decreased with raw perilla leaves added. Addition of raw perilla leaf extract and lyophilized perilla leaves decreased the turbidity of the fresh noodles. Hardness of the fresh noodles was increased by the addition of lyophilized Perilla leaves. Next, we tested the effect of the addition of sesame leaves on microbial growth. No microbes were found in the fresh noodles in the absence or presence of sesame leaves at day 0. When the noodles were stored for 3 days, the greatest number of bacteria was detected in the noodles without perilla leaves while addition of perilla leaves lowered the amount of bacteria in the noodles. We then performed the sensory test. For the raw perilla leaf extract addition, the noodles with 9% of extract exhibited the highest in appearance, flavor, color (6.47), texture (6.60), and overall acceptability (7.67). Texture was the highest in the ones with 3% (6.87) and 5% (6.20) of extracts added. Overall acceptability (7.07) was the best when 3% perilla leaves were added. Overall, 9% addition of raw perilla leaf extract or 3% addition of lysophilized perilla leaves showed optimal tastes.
