도시발생 슬러지를 이용한 환경친화적 인공배지 생산 (Production of Environment-friendly Artificial Media for Agriculture Using Urban Sludge)

  • Large amount of sludge have been generating in the process of water and wastewater treatment in urban area, and it has been making many environmental problems. Currently almost of sludge is landfilled, and since sludge is difficult to handle and dehydrate, the permeated water from the filled-in ground contaminate the surrounding soil and groundwater which may cause serious environmental and sociological problems. The organic component in sludge can be almost removed through the heat treatment process, and the final product is called artificial soil or artificial media according to the temperature control. To produce artificial media using sludge, chabazite and lime were used as an additive, and the mixture of sludge & additives was thermally treated in the firing kiln at about 800~1, 100。C for about fifteen minutes. The physical and chemical characteristics of the produced artificial media were analyzed, and it showed that it can be used as an artificial media for plant production or soil conditioner for farmland. The concentrations of the toxic heavy metals in the artificial media were lower than the soil quality standard for farmland. The characteristics of produced artificial media, using the mixture of sludge and additives through the heat treatment, is similar to the natural chabazite and soil. The analyzed result of the mineral composition of artificial media showed that it has a characteristics similar to natural stable soil, so the produced artificial media may be applied to farmland or water culture without causing adverse effect. Therefore this study showed that the above process can be a feasible alternative for sludge treatment.

조류 도입에 의한 가로수 체계 선호도 분석 (Street trees system preference by birds introduction analysis)

  • This research to streets at Daegu, and view adjective how people react when draw a bird into interior in city utilize and examine becoming direction of street trees system. Findings on survey, citizens appear by average 2.87 in management degree of street trees and average 2.76 in various of species of trees, discontent thing more or less by average 2.91 in satisfaction of the beauty, and demonstrate high shame from satisfaction for season stuff to comparative high 3.24, generally, citizens appear by there are parts to improve by do dissatisfaction about street trees system at Daegu. Also, street trees 2 lines plantings for a bird is average 3.05, shows affirmative feedback about that shrub utilization for a bird see high numerical value by average 3.4 and people draw a bird to space of city. Therefore, construct street trees friendly to the nature and be considered to need to re-establish set street trees environment in citizens preference to recover city ecosystem. As result that examine reaction which treat in street trees planting programs to draw birds into city through view adjective, Likert scales about 2 lines plantings of street trees and additional planting of shrub show affirmative feedback by average 3.4 both ordinary people and specialist group, if people want to draw birds into city by various of method, various research should be accomplished.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Kapok (Ceiba pentandra) and Balsa (Ochroma pyramidale) Fibers

  • Natural fibers derived from lignocellulosic materials are considered to be more environment-friendly than petroleum-based synthetic fibers. Several natural fibers, such as seedpod fibers, have a potential for development, including kapok and balsa fibers. The characteristics of both fibers were evaluated to determine their suitability for specific valuable applications. The purpose of this study was to analyze some important fundamental properties of kapok and balsa fibers, including their dimensions, morphology, chemical components, and wettability. The results showed that the average fiber lengths for kapok and balsa were 1.63 and 1.30 cm, respectively. Kapok and balsa fibers had thin cell walls and large lumens filled with air. The kapok fiber was composed of 38.09% ${\alpha}-cellulose$, 14.09% lignin, and 2.34% wax content, whereas the balsa fiber was composed 44.62% ${\alpha}-cellulose$, 16.60% lignin, and 2.29% wax content. The characteristics of kapok and balsa fibers were examined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry analyses. The contact angle of the distilled water on kapok and balsa fibers was more than $90^{\circ}$, indicating that both fibers are hydrophobic with low wettability properties because of to the presence of wax on the fiber surface.

Improvement of Hairy Vetch Seed Production by Mixture Cropping of Hairy Vetch and Triticale

  • Demand for the domestic hairy vetch seed production will be increased with the increasing interest of environment-friendly agriculture in Korea. This study was conducted during from 2000 fall to 2003 spring at upland field of National Institute of Crop Science in Suwon, Korea to compare wheat and triticale (TC) as stake crop of hairy vetch (HV), and to know proper seeding rates and ratios between TC and HV for the maximum HV seed production. As supporting crop of HV, TC was superior to wheat at the points of higher HV seed yield, stronger TC stalk for supporting, consistence of ripening stage of two seeds. In seeding method, row seeding was superior to broadcast seeding at the points of less lodging and higher HV seed yield. HV seed yield decreased with the increase of TC seeding rate in mixture cropping (row seeding), particularly at TC seeding rates over 5kg/10a. HV seed yield increased with the increase of HV seeding rate at the condition of TC seeding rates under 5kg/10a in spite of higher lodging of mixed crops at higher HV seeding rate due to higher HV aboveground dry matter. Maximum HV seed yield was obtained at TC seeding rate of $1\~1.5kg/10a$ as indicating HV seed yield 176kg/l0a (CV. Madison) at seeding rate of TC 1kg/10a + HV 2 kg/10a in 2001, and HV seed yield 96kg/10a (CV. Common) at seeding rate of TC 1.5kg/10a + HV 4.5kg/10a in 2003. Use of all-purpose combine harvester for harvesting and appliance for separation of mixed seeds using centrifugal force, which are prerequisite for HV seed production, was excellent in the simultaneous seeds production system of HV and TC.

Engineering Cellulose Fibers for High-Value Added Products for Pulp & Paper Industry

  • Cellulose fibers is one of the most abundant in nature. It has many distinctive features: abundant in nature, biodegradable, non-toxic, eco-friendly, sustainable, easy to fabricate, hydrophilic, and cost-effective. Cellulose fibers, known as pulp, is produced from cellulose-containing materials by the pulping process. As the raw material, wood has been most commonly used while recycled pulp has been also used to some degree. Thus, pulp usually refers to wood pulp. Generally, the pulp and paper industry is regarded as the commodity market where the cost should be much more important than the quality. It also belongs to a mature market where the growth is slow, or even in decline. Accordingly, technological development has been rather stagnant for the industry. Recently, however, the pulp and paper industry has faced very serious challenges. First, due to digital technology, there has been a steady decline in the need for pulp and paper products. The digital industry has continuously replaced printed products such as books, newspapers, and magazines. Second, there has been a trend initiated by developed countries to limit the use of wood as the raw material for the sake of environmental protection. This forces the industry to find a more efficient use of wood pulp as well as finding alternative, non-wood sources. Third, as an individual becomes wealthier and more conscious of health-care, the quality of a product becomes more important than the cost. Thus, a paradigm shift is needed from the cost-conscientious to the quality conscientious. The objective of this article is to review the technologies aimed at engineering cellulose fibers for producing high-value added paper products.

Synnemata Production Using Silkworm Variety, Female Yangwonjam by Isaria tenuipes

  • This study was conducted to confirm the possible use of female Yangwonjam as a host for synnemata production of Isaria tenuipes in eight local areas in Korea. Silkworm pupation rate, infection rate and synnemata characteristics of I. tenuipes were examined. Normal silkworms had a higher pupation rate than silkworms inoculated with I. tenuipes. The pupae survival percentage of normal silkworm in cocoons was 92.5~97.6%, whereas it ranged from 91.1~95.6% in silkworms sprayed with I. tenuipes. Female Yangwonjam showed the highest survival percentage at 97.6% among the silkworm varieties tested. I. tenuipes infection rate of larvae of 5th instar newly-exuviated silkworms was 89.2~90.7% in the spring rearing season and 98.2~99.3% in the autumn rearing season. Synnemata production of I. tenuipes was excellent in female Yangwonjam with an incidence rate of 98.0% followed by male Yangwonjam (94.1%) and Baegokjam (93.3%) in the spring rearing season. Synnemata living weight ranged from 1.44~0.94 g in the spring rearing season. The female Yangwonjam had the heaviest synnemata weight (1.44 g) in the spring rearing season. The synnemata of I. tenuipes produced on pupae were white or milky-white in color, and were similar in shape and color to wild synnemata collected in Korea.

밀리타리스동충하초가 테스토스테론 형성에 미치는 영향 (Stimulatory Effect of Cordyceps militaris on Testosterone Production in Male Mouse)

  • 엽산을 다량 함유하고 있는 수벌 번데기와 수벌 번데기에서 생산한 밀리타리스동충하초의 혈청 테스토스테론 상승효과를 확인하기 위하여 실험동물 쥐에 4주간 경구 투여하여 체중변화, 테스토스테론의 수치를 검사하였다. 대조군 및 투여군에서 체중의 증가량은 그룹간, 날짜별 유의적인 차이는 보이지 않았다. 혈청 테스토스테론은 대조군에 비하여 시료를 투여한 모든 군에서 증가경향을 보였다. 더욱이 밀리타리스동충하초 투여구의 호르몬 수치는 대조군에 비하여 통계학적 유의하게 증가하였다.

  • 유전공학은 대장균의 유전자조작으로부터 시작되어 지금은 생명과학전반에서 급속하게 발전하고 있다. 최근의 유전자조작기술은 특정유전자를 염색체 내에 넣고 빼고 하는 기술이 확립되어서 의학과 농학을 포함한 응용생명과학분야에서 유용하게 이용되고 있다. 본 리뷰에서는 높은 친환경성과 경제성을 가진 '지배적 치사곤충방사법'(Release of insects Carrying a Dominant Lethal: RIDL)을 중심으로 포괄적인 분자해충관리에 관하여 설명한다. 비록 현재로서는 RIDL을 직접 포장에 적용하기에는 아직 어려운 점이 많지만, 계속적인 유전공학기술의 발전을 통하여 농약을 사용하지 않고 생태계를 교란하지 않는 범위에서 사용될 수 있는 가장 좋은 해충관리방법 중의 한 가지가 될 것이다. 이때에 가장 고려할 점은 주위 환경교란부분에 많은 주의가 요구된다.

느타리버섯 포자와 균사체의 양성자 빔 조사에 대한 민감도 (Proton Beam Sensitivity of Basidiospore and Mycelium in Pleurotus ostreatus)

  • 양성자 빔 조사 후 조사선량에 따른 느타리버섯(Pleurotus ostreatus) 담자포자 발아율 및 균사체 생존율이 $10{\sim}100\;Gy$조사선량에서 시그모이드 곡선을 그리며 증가하였으며, 이후 500y 이상 조사시 유의성있게 감소하였다. 50% 치사율($L_{50}$)을 나타내는 조사선량은 담자포자가 500 Gy, 균사체가 400 Gy로 나타났으며, $D_{10}$값($D_{10}\;=\;-l/slope(b)$, y = a + bx) 은 각각 750 Gy와 1,250 Gy로 나타났다. 느타리버섯 돌연변이원으로서 양성자 빔 이용시 적정 조사선량은 담자포자의 경우 $500{\sim}750\;Gy$, 균사체의 경우 $400{\sim}1,000\;Gy$가 바람직하다고 판단되었다.

알루미늄 식물학적정화에 사용 가능하고 생분해 되는 킬레이트로 후보로서의 ethylenediamine (Ethylenediamine as a Promising and Biodegradable Chelating Agent in Aluminum Phytoremediation)

  • Phytoextraction은 식물을 이용하여 환경 정화하는 한 기술로서 금속으로 오염된 토양을 정화하는 것이다. 토양에 존재하는 금속의 추출을 용이 하기 위해서 현재 다양한 킬레이트가 사용되고 있다. Phytoextraction이 경제적이고 친환경적인 장점이 있지만 고농도로 오염된 지역에서는 적용이 어려운데 이는 식물이 이러한 지역에서 살아남기 어렵기 때문이며 이러한 문제점을 해결하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 연구 대상의 금속으로서 알루미늄을 선택하였고, 킬레이트는 아미노산인 시스테인과 히스티딘, 작은 크기의 유기산으로서 citric acid, malic acid, succinic acid, oxalic acid, 그리고 ethylenediamine (EDA)를 선택하였으며, EDTA는 비교 대상으로 본 연구에 사용되었다. 다양한 농도의 알루미늄를 포함하는 배지에 식물을 키우면서 여러 킬레이트가 식물의 뿌리 성장에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 알루미늄에 의한 식물의 성장 억제는 히스티딘에 의해서 약간 완화되었으며 시스테인, citrate, malate, oxalate, 그리고 succinate는 별 다른 영향이 없었다. EDTA와 EDA는 알루미늄에 의한 식물성장 억제를 강력하게 억제하였으며 이는 알루미늄의 식물 내 흡수를 억제에 의한 것이다. 따라서 알루미늄의 식물성장억제를 강력하게 완화시켜주는 EDA는 고농도의 알루미늄으로 오염된 지역에 식물의 성장이 가능하도록 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것이다.
