  • In order to raise people with mathematical power and positive attitude toward mathematics fit for the 21st century, individual students should be provided with equal learning opportunities according to their ability and level, and the need of such mathematics education is even stronger for underachievers. As textbooks were considered the optimal learning materials at each stage, this study purposed to examine changes in students' mathematical learning abilities and mathematical tendency brought by the activities of analyzing and reviewing the textbooks of the previous grades. The subjects of this study were 5 mathematics underachievers from 3 fifth grade classes at D Elementary School. They were sampled from those who were selected based on the results of diagnostic assessment and the records at the end of April and gave their consent to participation in this study. For the sampled children, their current state was surveyed first, and then the experimental classes were given twice a week and a total of 32 sessions. The children judged their mathematical abilities through reviewing the textbooks from the 1st grade to the 4th grade, and studied the textbook of each stage by themselves. After the self study, they had the textbook contents review activity that extracted 10 problems considered important per semester, and the textbook analysis activity that grouped units in each stage according to relevancy, identified similarities and differences, and examined hierarchy. From the results of this study was found that the mathematics underachiever teaching method using the textbooks of the previous grades gives mathematics underachievers confidence in their abilities, strengthens mathematical connection, and develops the habits of exploring key contents through self study.

  • In this paper, the real state of using terms 'product', 'place value', 'nine-nine', and 'numeral' incorrectly or inconsistently in the area in Korean elementary school 1-2 grade math textbooks/workbooks are analyzed. Based on this analysis, the following four conclusions are presented. First, 'Product' should be defined in the ${\ll}$Math 3${\gg}$ textbook like 'sum' and 'difference'. Multiplication is introduced in the ${\ll}$Math 3${\gg}$ textbook/workbook, however, the result of that calculation is not referred to 'product'. Second, there is a need to reconsider the using the term 'place value' in 2nd elementary mathematics. In the ${\ll}$Math 3${\gg}$ and the ${\ll}$Math 4${\gg}$ textbooks/workbooks are not using the term 'place value' clearly. Third, the word 'addition nine-nine table' and 'subtraction nine-nine table' should not be used in the ${\ll}$Math 2${\gg}$ and the ${\ll}$Math 4${\gg}$ textbooks. Using the term 'multiplication nine-nine' and 'multiplication nine-nine table' in elementary school mathematics textbooks/workbooks instead of using the term 'nine-nine' and 'nine-nine table' respectively would be the possible cause of these inaccurate derivatives. Fourth, in 1st and 2nd elementary mathematics 'numeral' and 'number' should be used discriminately. There is a need to reconsider the using the term 'number' uniformly if possible.

  • In this study, we analyzed what STEAM-related subject contents, except mathematical knowledge, are contained in 2009 revised elementary first grade mathematics textbooks. STEAM-related subject contents in the textbooks were examined by unit and by strand of the content in the elementary school mathematics curriculum. According to the results, the number and the type of STEAM-related subject contents are different depending on the unit and the strand of the mathematics content. Generally speaking, in each unit and in each strand of mathematics, storytelling liberal arts-related contents are seen the most, followed by non-storytelling liberal arts-related contents and physical education contents in order, while the number of musical contents was very small. So we need to develop different STEAM materials in order to activate STEAM education in our elementary math classrooms.

  • One of major goals of mathematics education is to cultivate human resources which equip creative problem-solving ability. Thus, the enhancement of creative and converging ideas has been emphasized in the national curriculum since the 2009 revised curriculum. In the current study, we analyzed authorized textbook series to examine how each curriculum material addresses the creativity convergence competency. The foci of the analysis were creativity (originality, fluency, flexibility, elaboration) and convergence (intrinsic connection, extrinsic connection). In addition, we analyzed the national textbook which was based on the 2015 revised curriculum to investigate the transition between the national textbook and the authorized textbooks. We found the tasks that focused on fluency were the most frequent type regarding creativity and the tasks that connected with everyday life situations (extrinsic connection) were prevalent across the three textbook series. We provided suggestions about the development of mathematics textbooks and their implementation.

  • Data collection is crucial to the process of statistical problem solving since it influences the quality of statistical data. However, there is little instruction on data collection in the Korean mathematics curriculum. In this study, we examined how the data were collected and how the data collection method was taught in the Korean mathematics textbooks for 3rd and 4th grades. As a result, the data appeared in these textbooks were collected by using a variety of methods, including surveys, experiments, observations, and secondary data collections. There were not enough instructions on experiments and observations, compared to surveys and secondary data collection. Additionally, as each textbook works with a distinct contents while teaching data collection, it is expected that there would be variations in the levels that students learn in relation to data collection. Based on these findings, we draw some discussion points to determine how to improve the mathematics curriculum in order to effectively teach data collection in the elementary school.

  • Even and odd numbers are taught in elementary school mathematics, but the introductory activities, definitions, and properties of sum on even and odd numbers vary depending on which grade they are presented. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the activities related to even and odd numbers presented in Korean mathematics textbooks developed under the different curriculum revisions, and to further analyze the related activities in foreign textbooks to draw implications for the teaching of even and odd numbers. In Korean textbooks, from the time of the fourth mathematics curriculum until the 2007 revision, even and odd numbers were covered in the multiples and divisors unit of the fifth grade textbook, while since the 2009 revision, the first grade textbook has covered the topic along with teaching numbers up to 50 or 100. In addition, the definitions of even and odd numbers varied depending on the grade level and the nature of the unit being taught, and activities addressing the properties of sum were only presented in the mathematics textbook under the third curriculum along with a few mathematics workbooks. In foreign textbooks, even and odd numbers were introduced in Grades 1, 2, or 5, and their related activities varied accordingly. Based on these findings, this study discusses the implications for the teaching of even and odd numbers.

  • The meaning of zero as a number signifying nothing is introduced as a number 1 less than 1 in the first grade mathematics textbook. In addition, the first appearance of the properties of zero are described by exemplary situations of adding zero, subtracting zero, and multiplying by zero in the first and second grade mathematics textbooks. The meaning and the properties of 0, however, are not explicitly dealt with any longer in the follow-up learning. In this study, we discuss the way of introducing zero and the applications of the properties of zero for solving number sentences so that they could help elementary school students understand the meaning and the properties of zero. Based on these results, we suggest some educational implications on teaching and learning mathematics of zero.

  • This study analyzed the vocabularies presented in the 1st to 2nd grade elementary school mathematics field review textbook according to the 2022 revised curriculum using a 9th grade vocabulary system and improved them. The result of the analysis shows that the frequency of vocabulary that was not appropriate for the students' level was found to be 6.67% in the first semester of the first year and 12.17% in the second semester of the first year. For the first semester of the second year, it was 11.73%, and for the second semester of the second year, it was 14.19%. This shows that the frequency of vocabulary that may be difficult for students gradually increases. Based on the analysis results, vocabulary that had a high difficulty level but was not essential in the textbook was deleted, and essential vocabulary or vocabulary that was difficult for students was presented with pictures added or revised in more detail. In addition, words that can be modified with similar words with low lexical difficulty were replaced and presented. In this way, research on vocabulary difficulty can identify aspects of vocabulary used in textbooks and can help develop high-quality textbooks by appropriately modifying vocabulary for effective mathematics learning.

  • In this thesis, the extension of the pyramid is contemplated through the pyramids presented in textbook $\ll$Math 6-1${\gg}$ published according to the 2009 revised curriculum. In textbook $\ll$Math 6-1${\gg}$, the pyramid is defined by presenting rough sketches of typical pyramids in an extensional definition method. This contrasts with the method of defining the pyramid by using such an extensional definition and a connotative definition method that reveals common properties of all pyramids. In textbook $\ll$Math 6-1${\gg}$, right pyramids whose base can not be regarded as regular polygons, and oblique pyramids are hardly presented. Nonetheless, $\ll$Math 6-1 Teacher's Guide Book${\gg}$ says that we have no choice but to handle oblique pyramids. In this thesis, based on these results, the following implications are presented as conclusions. First, there should be enough discussion on the extension of the pyramid in elementary school mathematics, and agreement to the results. In particular, such discussions are highly necessary in revising the curriculum. Second, in the process of realizing the intention of the curriculum in the textbook through the teacher's guidebook, the extension of the pyramid must be consistent. Third, there should be some consensus about the knowledge that elementary teachers should know about the pyramid.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of digital mathematics textbook on spatial abilities, interest and achievement of 6th graders. For this, research questions were set as follow: A. Is there any difference in cognitive ability in the space perception test between the experimental group and the control group. B. What distinctive attributes exist between the experimental group and the control group in the Spatial abilities? C. Is there any difference in learners' interest and achievement between the experiment group and the control group. To investigate the research questions, two classes of 6th grade children were selected from an elementary school in Daejeon and assigned one as experimental group and the other as control group. The experimental group studied mathematics using Digital Textbooks under an individual PC environment while the control group studied using the existing book-type textbooks. The following results and conclusions were obtained from the research. First, the effect of the Digital Textbooks on children's mathematics achievement was not statistically meaningful even though there was some progress in children's achievement. Furthermore, it was not found that the usage of a Digital Textbooks consistently influenced improvement in the students' interest in mathematics. Second, there were some positive changes in the achievement of Spatial ability of the middle subgroup of pretest score in the experiment group. It can have some educational implication that the Digital Textbooks can affect positively to the middle group in mathematics achievement who dominated more than 50% of the class. Third, the number of correct answers was found to be somewhat higher than that of the control group in spatial reasoning items. This means that the learning environment with Digital Textbooks allow more opportunities for manipulating geometric objects physically and mentally. Therefore, It seems necessary to offer various resources such as digital contents for students' geometric learning. For future research, It is strongly recommended to fix the bugs of the digital textbook programs and to upgrade the operating system of the computer.
