  • The energy release rate for an interface crack in pseudo-isotropic dissimilar materials was obtained by the eigenfunction expansion method using the two-term William's type complex stress function. The complex stress function for pseudo-isotropic materials must be different from that for anisotropic materials. The energy release rate for an interface crack in pseudo-isotropic dissimilar materials was analyzed numerically by RWCIM. The results obtained were verified by comparing the other worker's results and discussed.

  • The histories and distributions of dynamic stresses in an orthotropic hollow cylinder under sinusoidal impact load are obtained by making use of eigenfunction expansion method in this paper. Dynamic equations for axially symmetric orthotropic problem are founded and results are carried out for a practical example in which an orthotropic hollow cylinder is in initially at rest and subjected to a dynamic interior pressure $p(t)=-{\sigma}_0(sin{\alpha}t+1)$. The features of the solution appear the propagation of the cylindrical waves. The other hand, a dynamic finite element solution for the same problem is also got by making use of structural software (ABAQUS) program. Comparing theoretical solution with finite element solution, it can be found that two kinds of results obtained by two different solving methods are suitably approached. Thus, it is further concluded that the method and computing process of the theoretical solution are effective and accurate.

  • We prove the existence of a positive solution for the system of the following nonlinear biharmonic equations with Dirichlet boundary condition $$\{{\Delta}^2u+c{\Delta}u+av^+=s_1{\phi}_1+{\epsilon}_1h_1(x)\;in\;{\Omega},\\{\Delta}^2v+c{\Delta}v+bu^+=s_2{\phi}_1+{\epsilon}_2h_2(x)\;in\;{\Omega},$$ where $u^+= max\{u,0\}$, $c{\in}R$, $s{\in}R$, ${\Delta}^2$ denotes the biharmonic operator and ${\phi}_1$ is the positive eigenfunction of the eigenvalue problem $-{\Delta}$ with Dirichlet boundary condition. Here ${\epsilon}_1$, ${\epsilon}_2$ are small numbers and $h_1(x)$, $h_2(x)$ are bounded.

  • In this study, reflection of water waves over a train of rectangular submerged breakwaters is experimentally investigated. Measured reflection coefficients of regular waves are compared with predicted coefficients obtained from the eigenfunction expansion method. Although measured coefficients are slightly smaller than predicted ones, the overall agreement is very good.

  • In this study, transmission and reflection of multi-directional random waves propagating over multi-arrayed submerged breakwaters are investigated using eigenfunction expansion method. The numerical analysis on the wave energy reflection of submerged breakwaters with various crown widths is carried out. Strong wave reflection is occurred at the Bragg reflection condition of the peak frequency. When relative heights and crown widths of breakwaters are equal to 0.6 and 0.4h, respectively, more than 25% of wave energy is reflected to off shore.

  • The present research describes the Bragg reflection of obliquely incident waves propagating over sinusoidally varying topographies. A numerical model based on the boundary element method is employed. Wave numbers providing Bragg reflection are calculated and compared to theoretical predictions. The reflection coefficients obtained from this model are also compared with those of the eigenfunction expansion method. A very good agreement is observed.

  • If an arbitrary topography is approximated to a number of vertical steps, both variational approximation and eigenfunction expansion method can be used to compute linear wave transformation over the bottom. In this study a scatterer method associated with variational approximation is proposed to calculate reflection and transmission coefficients. Present method may be shown to be more simple and direct than the successive-application-matrix method by O'Hare and Davies. And Several numerical examples are given which are in good agreement with existing results.

  • The decomposition of incident and reflected wave on the two-dimensional experimental flume is very important to elucidate the phenomena between waves and coastal structure such as submerged breakwater or rubble-mound breakwater. In generally, two or three point methods are widely used to decompose waves. Even though three point method gives more accurate result, it requires more wave gauge to install than two point method. Sometimes, this causes economic or measurement problems. In this study, therefore, the applicability of two point method was investigated by using Eigenfunction expansion method.

  • A reflected breakwater can be affected by wave pressure and power because it is to be concentrated by wave energy. The present study is to estimate hydraulic behavior affecting around a reflected breakwater, which is discontinuity cases and various angle of coner at the breakwater. The numerical model to investigate wave diffraction, which is important hydraulic factor in the ocean, is performed by using direct boundary element method. The present numerical results are compared with the solutions of approximate and absolute based on an eigenfunction, and the solution of analytical by Fresnel integral. The results of the present numerical simulation agreed well with those of the published numerical and analytical data. As a result of this study, wave height is high at the comer of breakwater, and it is to be high if angle of conner at the reflected breakwater is small.

  • In this study, a finite element model is employed to simulate the diffraction of waves caused by a change of water depths. The model is firstly applied to the estimation of reflection coefficients of monochromatic waves over a sinusoidally varying topography. Predicted coefficients are compared with those of the eigenfunction expansion method and laboratory measurements. A good agreement is observed. The model is then used to investigate effects of heights of bottom topography and number of ripples on variation of reflection coefficients of monocromatic water waves.
