Effects of Environmental Factors on the Adaptation to University Dormitory Life - The Case of Seoul National University Dormitories - (단지형 대학 기숙사의 거주환경요소가 기숙사생활 적응에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 - 서울대학교 관악학생생활관을 대상으로 -)

  • Dormitories of Korean university are planned to pursue qualitative growth after a period of quantitative growth in the 1970s. However, since the 1990s, the physical plan for qualitative growth has not changed significantly and the effects of these changes on dormitory residents has not been verified. The purpose of this study is to identify the environmental factors influencing dormitory life adaptation and to provide a basis for qualitative growth of university dormitories to help dormitory residents adapt to the environment. The research was conducted in three stages. First, the elements of the residential environment of the dormitory complex, which is an independent variable, were derived. The dormitory life adaptation scale was developed to measure the dependent variable. Secondly, a questionnaire survey was conducted to obtain the environmental factors of current dormitory and previous residence and three elements of dormitory life adaptation; 'acceptance of change', 'familiarity', and 'anxiety'. Third, statistical analysis was conducted to determine whether each factor influenced dormitory life adaptation.

Dietary Intake of High School Students in the Dormitories (전북지역 남여 고등학교 기숙사 학생들의 영양섭취 실태 조사)

  • A nutrition survey of 80 high school students in urban dormitories, 17-19 year old, in Jeonbuk province was undertaken in August of 1990, to investigate dietary intake. Total energy intake of male and female was 2,246.0 and 1,584.9 kcal respectively. Energy Intakes from breakfast, lunch and dinner were 553.5, 683.4 and 1,023.0 kcal in male, and 372.9, 391.8 and 820.2 local in female. Protein daily intake of male and female was 95.3 and 62.9g, and carbohydrate intake was 368.1g and 259.6g respectively. Total energy intake of male student was composed of carbohydrate 65%. protein 16.8% and fat 18.2% and that of female was carbohydrate 65.5%, protein 15.9% and fat 18.6% respectively.

  • The intaking patterns of minerals of 80 high school students in urban dormitories, 16∼19 year old, In Jeonbuk province were investigated in August, 1990. Dally sodium intake of male and female students was 6,539(NaCl 16.6g), and 4,240mg(NaCl 10.8g) respectively, and their potassium intake was 2.559 and 1.696 mg respectively, Their daily calcium intake was below the RDA's, which was 549.57 mg and 359.81 mg respectively. They were offered the most source of NaCl from the soups. Male and female students were offered NaCl only 2.18 g and 1.80g respectively from Kimchi which is one of the main side dishes.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest fundamental data for design and planning of university dormitory through the survey of facility condition and resident's satisfaction. The scope of this research is limited to the period from late 1980's to early 2000's. The University Dormitories in Jeollanam-do and Jeollabuk-do are selected as subject. The result of this study is as follow. 1) Even though dormitory's total area is increased than the past, user's satisfaction is still in low level. It's necessary for user to fit a space to life pattern and the difference of human. 2) As a result of comparing of the sexual difference, most men are more active than women in using facility and practice 3) Not only a part of facility but also a part of operation is important element in satisfaction.

  • This study aims to suggest design data for planning university dormitories to meet the needs of the occupants' through field survey and questionnaire survey at the sampled dormitories in A University in 2006. and the purpose of this study is to suggest program of the suitable common space in the dormitory buildings on campus, especially referred to newly built dormitory of A university. In conclusion, Living space accounts for 56.17%, studying space accounts for 1.86%, well-being support space accounts for 2.49%, convenience support space accounts for 8.35%, management space accounts for 3.08% of the whole area in the program of newly built dormitory.

Extracting Seismic Reinforcement Priorities to Promote Safety at Airmen Dormitories Using DEA (DEA 기법을 이용한 공군 병영생활관 내진보강 우선순위 도출)

  • The public has grown more anxious towards domestic earthquakes that have been taking place since 2000, and regulations on seismic design has been strengthened. Out of 4,605 Air Force installations that require the application of seismic design, 2,982 remain unapplied. By taking budget issues and the time spent to implement seismic retrofit into account, this paper aims to list up seismic reinforcement priorities for airmen dormitories where they can potentially be most vulnerable to earthquakes. The priorities are extracted based on Data Envelope Analysis(DEA). To apply DEA, two sets of variables are set: seismic reinforcement costs as input variable: age of building, number of residents, and seismic load as output variables. At the end, suggestions are made for developing seismic reinforcement plans that can be applied to all Air Force installations.

Physical Environment Change and Occupancy Evaluation on Green-Remodeled University Dormitory (그린리모델링 기숙사의 물리적환경 변화와 거주자평가)

  • This study focuses on the university dormitory remodeled toward energy efficiency. The study has its purpose on deriving the aspects to be concerned for later green remodeling and enhancing the effects of green remodeling, by analyzing the changes of physical environment, changes of energy consumption amount, and needs of the residents. For this purpose, the study went through the review of project report from government office for green remodeling, field investigation of remodeling elements, and the occupancy evaluation by Focus Group Interview. FGI means interviewing small group of the residents who lived in the subjected dormitories both before and after the remodeling. As results, the elements of green remodeling in targeted dormitories were inner wall insulation, top-floor ceiling insulation, replacement of windows, installment of automatic entrance door and making transfer space connected the entrance door. As the parts of equipment system, EHP high-efficiency cooler, highly efficient radiator, upgraded LED lightings with covers, and automatic control system (only one building) were installed. Energy consumption was declined, and the satisfaction of residents was increased after the green remodeling. However, the aspects which were not improved or unsatisfying also have been detected. Therefore, the study states the suggestions each for the administrators, designers and planners, and residents to concern for enhancing the effects of green remodeling or construction of new dormitories.

A Study on the Cooperative Housing for Foreign Students Education (외국인 유학생 교육을 위한 공동기숙사에 관한 연구)

  • Amid concentrating on inviting foreign students in the aspect of securing talents as well as advanced educational service industry in the world, the number of foreign students in Korea exceeded over 90,000 in 2015, increased to 104,262 anticipating further increase according to National Statistical Office. The government tried to expand the dormitory supply to the foreign students upon the discretion that short of the basic infrastructure in the universities such as quantitative shortage and facilities of the dormitories limited to lure the foreign students, despite the will of inviting more foreign students by the government, however, the rate of foreign students' staying in the dormitories was low with 36.0% nationwide in 2016, reflecting the difficulties of residence for the foreign students in Metropolitan areas. Hence, this study is to suggest the alternative potential as the cooperative housing for the foreign students with the expanded concept and its foundation methods, upon reviewing the concept and trend of the common dormitory such as universities-cooperative housing with the initiative of public institutions and the common dormitories for the Korean students studying in Seoul, and analyzing the university city of Paris and Tokyo International Exchange Center that are the examples of existing cooperative housing in overseas.

A Study on the Existing State of Facilities and Its User's Satisfaction for Handicapped Students in the Dormitory Buildings on Campus (대학교 기숙사 건축에 있어서 장애인 시설의 실태와 장애인 학생의 만족도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to minimize physical obstacles for handicapped students in university dormitories. To carry out this study, we have surveyed 10 Universities in Korea. First we have studied the law and the theory of architectural planning and design guides those are related with handicapped people. And it was surveyed the existing state of the dormitories facilities and made a checklist. And the satisfaction about the facilities was questioned to the handicapped students who used those buildings. It is concluded that most of the universities which we have surveyed were equipped with good facilities for the general students but don't have regards for handicapped people at that time. As the result of the rate of the satisfaction, they are satisfied those facilities generally. As you can see the result of this research, the facilities in University are not very good for handicapped people in many points. So that kind of many facilities must be taken into consideration for handicapped people in the stage of architectural programming in the process of designing the dormitory building.

Need of Dormitory Environment Improvement and School-life Stress in the Special-purpose high school according to Residential Satisfaction in Dormitory and Housing (기숙사와 자가의 주거환경 만족도에 따른 특목고의 기숙사 환경개선 요구도 및 학교생활 스트레스)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence the need for improvements to dormitory environments and to study the stress from school-life according to residential satisfaction in dormitories and housing. For the purpose of this study, a survey was conducted including a questionnaire consisting of a residential satisfaction scale, a need of dormitory environment improvement scale, and a school-life stress scale. The subjects were 453 special purpose students in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do who all live in a dormitory. Factor analysis, Cronbach' $\alpha$ and MANOVA were employed for data analysis, and Scheffe test was used for post-hoc analysis. First, the lower group the satisfaction of a physical residential environment in a dormitory, the more likely it is that the dormitory environment need improvement. The result of this study suggests that dormitory students are much more sensitive to conditions relating to physical residential satisfaction than to sociopsychological residential satisfaction. Also, the residents believe that change to these physical residential conditions facilitate an improvement to sociopsychological residential satisfaction. Moreover, when the satisfaction of a physical residential environment is lower group, more perceptive stress occurs from academic, health and personal factors while a lower satisfaction for the sociopsychological residential environment results in a more perceptive stress from the environment. The result of this study suggests that dormitory conditions indicate the necessity of improving the environment to adapt well to school-life, thus reducing stress. Also when simply providing a supplementary physical residential environment the sociopsychological residential environment should be considered, as this can cause conflicts between roommates. Second, the lower group the satisfaction for a physical residential environment in housing, the more likely it is that the dormitory environment need improvement. The result of this study suggests that for environments of inadequate housing there is a strong urge towards needing more independence and a better living environment. Third, when group feel there is a more substantial difference in the physical residential environment between dormitories and housing, it is more likely it is that the dormitory environment need to be improved. Also, when they feel there is more substantial difference in the sociopsychological residential environment between dormitories and housing, a more perceptive stress is detected from the environment. The result of this study suggests that dormitory students want to have the same level of conditions as those provided in housing. Also, dormitory students want to need more physical environment improvement than sociopsychological environment improvement.
