  • In recent years, the optical properties of multiple-scattering media like tissue have been studied for their potential applications in medicine. In this work the optical properties of multiple scattering media were investigated using the time-resolved reflectance measurement. The reflected light was measured by time-correlated single photon counting system. The transport scattering and absorption coefficient are related to the initial rapid decay and the subsequent decay in reflected light, respectively. Also the optical properties of the samples were measured by conventional method, ie., using continuous wave light. When the distance between the light source and the detector is over 8mm, the optical coefficient can be measured accurately using the suggested method.

  • The present work presents analysis results of the core design optimizations for an annular, prismatic High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) with passive decay-heat removal features. Its thermal power is 100 MWt and the operating temperature is 850 ℃ (1123 K). The neutronic calculations are done for the core with heterogeneous distribution of fuel and burnable poison particles (BPPs) to flatten the reactivity swing and power peaking factor (PPF) during the reactor operation as well as for control rod (CR) insertion into the core to restrain a small excess reactivity less than 1$. The next step of the study is done for evaluation of core reactivity coefficient of temperature.

  • In this study, we consider a heat equation with a variable-coefficient linear forcing term and a time-periodic boundary condition. Under some decay and smoothness assumptions on the coefficient, we establish the existence and uniqueness of a time-periodic solution satisfying the boundary condition. Furthermore, possible connections to the closed boundary layer equations were discussed. The difficulty with a perturbed leading order coefficient is demonstrated by a simple example.

  • The migration equation is modified for a three-member decay chain in the fracture and porous matrix Analytical solutions are obtained by utilizing Laplace transform the initial conditions of Delta function and Bateman equation. The concentrations for each nuclide of Np$^{237}$ -U$^{233}$ -Th$^{229}$ and U$^{234}$ -Th$^{230}$ -Ra$^{226}$ chains selected from the 4n+1 and 4n+2 chains are plotted by utilizing analytical solutions in the fracture. Retardation coefficient of the nuclides are obtained using those of the granite. The results indicate that the daughter nuclides such as U$^{233}$ , Th$^{229}$ , Th$^{230}$ and Ra$^{226}$ become important at the far field from the repository though there is very small initial inventory in the waste solid or spent fuel, for they are produced by the mother nuclides decayed in the fracture and porous matrix.

  • The chlorine's residual concentration prevents the regrowth of microorganism in water transport along the pipeline system. Precise prediction of chlorine concentration is important in determining disinfectant injection for the water distribution system. In this study, a pilot scale water distribution system was designed and fabricated to measure the temporal variation of chlorine concentration for three flow conditions (V = 0.88, 1.33, 1.95 m/s). Various kinetic models were applied to identify the relationship between hydraulic condition and chlorine decay. Genetic Algorithm (GA) was integrated into five kinetic models and time series of chlorine were used to calibrate parameters. Model fitness was compared by Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) between measurement and prediction. Limited first order model and Parallel first order showed good fitness for prediction of chlorine concentration.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the decay characteristics of the hat interpolation wavelet coefficients of some smooth functions defined in a two-dimensional space. The motivation of this research is to establish some fundamental mathematical foundations needed in justifying the adaptive multiresolution analysis of the hat-interpolation wavelet-Galerkin method. Though the hat-interpolation wavelet-Galerkin method has been successful in some classes of problems, no complete error analysis has been given yet. As an effort towards this direction, we give estimates on the decaying ratios of the wavelet coefficients at children interpolation points to the wavelet coefficient at the parent interpolation point. We also give an estimate for the difference between non-adaptively and adaptively interpolated representations.

  • The aim of present study is to elucidate the relationship between decay rate of soil organic matter, and the change of soil microbial population under the oak and pine forest soils in Kwang-nung plantation stand. The results obtained are as follows: 1) The correlation coefficient between decay rate and the soil bacteria is 0.84 and fungi 0.93. 2) The distribution of soil microbial population is higher in both F horizon of the oak forest soil, and F and H horizon of the pine forest soil. However, the number of soil microorganisms decreases with the depth in each forest soil. 3) The population of soil microbes is related to moisture content, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and exchangeable calcium, except organic carbon in fungi. 4) The soil organic matter has been mainly decomposed by fungi, and the size of its population are governed by the factors such as moisture content, organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and exchangeable calcium.

  • In this study, we investigated the variations of the kinetic coefficients and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), N and P mass used for assimilation of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system with the variation of SRTs; SRTs of 7.5, 10.0, 12.5, 15.0 and 20.0 days were tested in one cycle of SBR operation to determine the optimum conditions for the operation of the SBR and estimate its COD, nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies. The SBR system was operated under the conditions as follows: an operation time of 6 hours per cycle, a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12 hours, an influent COD loading of $0.4kg/m^3/day$, and an influent nitrogen loading of $0.068kgT-N/m^3/day$. The yield coefficient (Y) and decay rate coefficient ($k_d$) were estimated to be 0.4198 kgMLVSS/kgCOD and $0.0107day^{-1}$ by calculating the removal rate of substrate according to the variation of SRT. Considering total nitrogen amount removed by sludge waste process, eliminated by denitrification, and in clarified water effluent with reference to 150 mg/cycle of influent nitrogen amount, the percentage of nitrogen mass balance from the ratio of the nitrogen amount in effluent (N output) to that in influent (N input) for Runs 1~5 were 95.5, 97.0, 95.5, 99.5, and 95.5%, respectively, which is well accounted for, with mass balances close to 100%.

  • We show that selfadjoint operator extensions of minimal second order difference operators have only discrete spectrum when the odd order coefficient is unbounded but grows or decays according to specific conditions. Selfadjoint operator extensions of minimal differential operator under similar growth and decay conditions on the coefficients have a absolutely continuous spectrum of multiplicity one.

  • A finite element scheme is considered for the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation with the nonconstant gradient energy coefficient. The scheme inherits energy decay property and mass conservation as for the classical solution. We obtain the corresponding error estimate using the extended Lax-Richtmyer equivalence theorem.
