Hybrid Insulator Organic Thin Film Transistors With Improved Mobility Characteristics

  • Hybrid insulator pentacene thin film transistors (TFTs) were fabricated with thermally grown oxide and cross-linked polyvinylalcohol (PVA) including surface treatment by dilute ploymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) layers on $n^+$ doped silicon wafer. Through the optimization of $SiO_2$ layer thickness in hybrid insulator structure, carrier mobility was increased to above 35 times than that of the TFT only with the gate insulator of $SiO_2$ at the same transverse electric field. The carrier mobility of 1.80 $cm^2$/V-s, subthreshold swing of 1.81 V/decade, and $I_{on}$/ $I_{off}$ current ratio > 1.10 × $10^5$ were obtained at low bias (less than -30 V) condition. The result is one of the best reported performances of pentacne TFTs with hybrid insulator including cross-linked PVA material at low voltage operation.

Preparation of poly(vinyl alcohol)-coated Composite Nanofiltration Membranes on Various Support Membranes (다양한 지지체 분리막 위에 poly(vinyl alcohol)이 코팅된 나노복합막의 제조)

  • The poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based thin film composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes were prepared by coating polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes, sulfonated polyethersulfone and polyamide NF membranes with aqueous PVA solution by a pressurizing method. The PVA was cross-linked with aqueous glutaraldehyde solution. The NF membranes coated with a very low concentration of PVA on all the support membranes was successfully prepared. With increasing the hydrophilicity of the support membranes, the water flux increased. Especially, ζ-potential of negatively charged polyamide NF membrane was reduced by coating the membrane with PVA. A fouling experiment was carried out with positively charged surfactant, humic acid, complex of humic acid and calcium ion and bovine serum albumin. A non-coated polyamide NF membrane was significantly fouled by various foulants. The fouling process when using humic acid and protein occurred at the isoelectric point. There was severe fouling when using humic acid and adding bivalent cations. By coating the polyamide NF membrane with aqueous PVA solution, fouling was reduced. The polyamide NF membrane coated with PVA was resistant to the acidic and basic solution.

Physical properties of mungbean starch/PVA bionanocomposites added nano-ZnS particles and its photocatalytic activity

  • The main objective of this study is to prepare the bionanocomposite films using mungbean starch (MBS), PVA, ZnS, and plasticizers, and to evaluate the physical properties, thermal stability, and photocatalytic activity. The bionanocomposite films were cross-linked by heat-curing process. The ZnS and bionanocomposite films were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and SEM. The results indicated that the mechanical properties and water resistance enhanced up to 1.2-1.5 times by the addition of nano-ZnS particles, and the thermal stability was improved by the addition of nano-ZnS particles. The photocatalytic activity of the bionanocomposite films added nano-ZnS particles was examined using bisphenol A (BPA) and methyl orange (MO). In addition, the photodegradation efficiency of BPA and MO was evaluated using the pseudo-first order kinetic model (PFOK).

Study on OTFT-Backplane for Electrophoretic Display Panel (전기영동 디스플레이 패널용 OTFT-하판 제작 연구)

  • We fabricated flexible electrophoretic display(EPD) driven by organic thin film transistors(OTFTs) on plastic substrate. We designed the W/L of OTFT to be 15, considering EPD's transient characteristics. The OTFTs employed bottom contact structure and used Al for gate electrode, the cross-linked polyvinylphenol for gate insulator, pentacene for active layer. The plastic substrate was coated by PVP barrier layer in order to remove the islands which were formed after pre-shrinkage process and caused the electrical short between bottom scan and top data metal lines. Pentacene active layer was confined within the gate electrodes so that the off current was controlled and reduced by gate electrodes. Especially, PVA/Acryl double layers were inserted between EPD panel and OTFT-backplane in order to protect OTFT-backplane from the damages created by lamination process of EPD panel on the backplane and also accommodate pixel electrodes through via holes. From the OTFT-backplane the mobility was $0.21cm^2/V.s$, Ion/Ioff current ratio $10^5$. The OTFT-EPD panel worked successfully and demonstrated to display some patterns.

Pervaporation Dehydration of Acetic Acid Aqueous Solution using PVA/PAA Membrane with Na-Y Zeolite (Na-Y 제올라이트가 첨가된 PVA/PAA 분리막의 아세트산 수용액에서 투과 증발 연구)

  • Membranes were prepared by incorporating Na-Y zeolite particles into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) cross-linked with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The membrane was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, contact angle measurement, swelling test, SEM analysis, and XRD analysis. The pervaporation separation of water/acetic acid mixtures was carried out using prepared membranes. From the results, it was shown that the hydrophilic property of prepared membrane increased with increase of zeolite contents and the PVA/PAA membrane with zeolite addition showed higher permeation flux than that of without zeolite membrane. The PVA/PAA membrane containing 8 wt% zeolite showed the highest permeation flux and separation in the feed solution containing 10 wt% acetic acid.

Development of Aloin Loaded PVA/CMC Hydrogel for Wound Healing (알로인이 함유된 창상치료제용 PVA/CMC 하이드로젤의 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an aloin-loaded wound dressing with an enhanced healing effect. The cross-linked hydrogel films were prepared with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) using a freeze-thawing (F-T) method. Their gel properties, release of drug, in vivo wound healing effect and histopathology were then evaluated. In the wound healing test, this aloin loaded PVA/CMC hydrogel showed faster healing of the wound made in rat dorsum than the aloin carbomer 934 gel or the control (carbomer 934 gel) due to phytochemical activity of aloin and moisture of CMC. In conclusion, the aloin-loaded wound dressing composed of 5% PVA, 5% CMC and 0.125% aloin is a potential wound dressing with enhanced wound healing effect.

Pervaporation Separation of Water/Alcohol Mixtures Using PVA/SSA/PSSA_MA Ion Exchange Membranes (PVA/SSA/PSSA_MA 이온교환막을 이용한 물-알코올 계의 투과증발 분리)

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes cross-linked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) in which poly(4-styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA_MA) was blended to endow more ion exchange capacity were prepared to measure the permselectivities of water-alcohol mixtures by pervaporation separation technique. The feed mixtures of binary aqueous methanol, ethanol and iso-propyl alcohol solution by 90 wt% alcohol portion were used. Typically, for PVA10/SSA9/PSSA_MA90 membrane, the flux of 202.6, 47.8, $20.2g/m^2hr$ for aqueous methanol, ethanol and iso-propyl alcohol solutions was shown while the best separation factors of 34.2, 291 and 991 were given by PVA10/SSA11/PSSA_MA80 membrane. Flexible OTFT-Backplane for Active Matrix Electrophoretic Display Panel

  • We fabricated flexible OTFT-backplanes for the electrophoretic display(EPD). The OTFTs employed bottom contact structure on PEN substrate and used the cross-linked polyvinylphenol for gate insulator, pentacene for active layer. Especially, we used PVA/Acryl double layers for passivation of backplane as well as for pixel dielectric layer between backplane and EPD panel. The OTFT-EPD panel worked successfully anddemonstrated to display some patterns.

Evaluations of Poly{vinyl alcohol)/Alginate Hydrogels Cross-linked by r-ray Irradiation Technique

  • In this work, we prepared hydrogels for wound dressing from a mixture of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and alginate using the $\^$60/Co ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation technique. We examined the physical properties of these hydrogels, including gelation, water absorptivity, and gel strength, to evaluate the applicability of these hydrogels for wound dressings. The biocompatibility of these hydrogels was also evaluated in vitro, in cultures of mouse fibroblasts, and in vivo, by subcutaneous implantation studies in rats. The gel content and strength increased upon increasing the radiation dose and upon decreasing the concentration of alginate. The degree of swelling was inversely proportional to the gel content and strength. The degree of cytotoxicity of the ${\gamma}$-ray-treated hydrogels was ca. 60% compared to the (-) control (serum) after 1 day of incubation. When the incubations were prolonged up to 2 days, the toxicity of all the samples decreased remarkably and reached that of the control. Subcutaneous implantation studies in rats indicated that foreign body reactions occurring around the implanted hydrogels were moderate and became minimal upon increasing the implantation time.

Study on the Top-Gate Pentacene Thin Film ransistors Using Solution Processing Polymeric Gate Insulator (용액 공정 고분자 게이트 절연체를 이용한 Top-Gate 펜타센 박막 트랜지스터에 관한 연구)

  • 본 논문에서는 용액 공정을 이용한 고분자 절연층을 갖는 top-gate 구조의 펜타센 박막 트랜지스터(Thin Film Transistor, TFT)의 특성을 연구하였다. Top-gate 구조의 펜타센 TFT 제작에 앞서 유기 반도체인 펜타센의 결정성 성장을 돕기 위해서 가교된 PVP (cross-linked poly(4-vinylphenol))를 유리 기판 상에 스핀 코팅을 이용하여 형성한 후, 노광 공정을 통해 니켈/은 구조를 갖는 채널 길이 $10{\mu}m$의 소오스, 드레인 전극을 형성하였다. 그리고 열 증착을 이용하여 60 nm 두께의 펜타센 층을 성막하였고, 고분자 절연체로서 PVA(polyvinyl alchol) 또는 가교된 PVA를 용액공정인 스핀 코팅을 이용하여 형성한 후 열 증착으로 알루미늄 게이트 전극을 성막하였다. 이로써 제작된 소자들의 전기적 특성을 확인한 결과 가교된 PVA를 사용한 펜타센 TFT 보다 PVA를 게이트 절연체로 사용한 소자가 전기적 특성이 우수한 것으로 관찰되었다. 이는 PVA의 가교 공정에 의한 펜타센 박막의 성능 퇴화에 기인한 것으로 사료된다. 실험 결과 $0.9{\mu}m$ 두께의 PVA 게이트 절연막을 사용한 top-gate 구조의 펜타센 TFT의 전계 효과 이동도와 문턱전압, 그리고 전류 점멸비는 각각, 약 $3.9{\times}10^{-3}\;cm^2/Vs$, -11.5 V, $3{\times}10^5$으로써 본 연구에서 제안된 소자가 용액 공정형 top-gate 유기 TFT 소자로서 우수한 성능을 나타냄을 알 수 있었다.
