  • Objectives : The antioxidant activities of Yeonkyo-san and its ingredient were investigated for industrial application. Methods : We experimented radical scavenging effect, superoxide dismutase and cytotoxicity effect of various cancer cell. Results : The result were obtained as follows : Primary testing of cytotoxicity of Yeonkyo-san and ingredient was done for G361. B16F10, MDA and A549 cell lines. Yeonkyo-san and ingredient water extract, ethanol extract showed cytotoxicity of over 90% respectively against cell line. The electron donating ability(EDA) of water extract from the Yeonkyo-san was higher than 60%, ethanol extract from the Yeonkyo-san was over 80% at 1000 ppm. The electron donating ability(EDA) of water extract and ethanol extract from the Yeonkyo-san ingredients were increased as well. SOD-like activity was high as 75% in 700 ppm, it was increased. All the other samples showed less than 40% SOD-like activity. Conclusions : The results indicated that water extract and ethanol extract of Yeonkyo-san and ingredient can be used as a natural ingredient with biological functions in cosmetic and food composition.

  • Objective : In this study, anti-oxidant and cosmeceutical activities of Isatis tinctoria L. extracted from water, ethanol and supercritical fluid condition were confirmed to investigate cosmeceutical activities for utilization as cosmetic ingredient. Methods: Anti-oxidant and cosmeceutical activities were investigated by using electron donating ability, xanthine oxidase, tyrosinase, astringent effect. Result : Isatis tinctoria L. extracts by supercritical fluid, water and ethanol showed good electron donating ability which were 82.7%, 62.6% and 44.8% at the concentration at 1,000ppm, respectively. Xanthine oxidase activity related with purine metabolism was inhibited by ethanol extract about 52.3% at the concentration at 1,000ppm. Tyrosinase inhibition effects, by supercritical fluid extract, ethanol extract and water extract, were 83.3%, 52.9% and 41.2% respectively at 1,000ppm. In the measurement of astringent effect, supercritical fluid extract at the concentration to 5,000ppm showed 85.7% in related activity. The water extract showed 95.9% nitrite scavenging activity at 5,000ppm. • In Korea-U.S.A. FTA Negotiation, U.S.A. request to eliminate barriers of tariffs and non-tariff in trade of cosmetics. Korea applies tariffs of 8% on most cosmetics and personal care products. There are some non-tariffs barriers in cosmetics trade between Korea and U.S.A., for example, transparency on restriction and regulatory, cosmeceuticals, import clearance review, quality control testing, ingredient labelling. Tariffs of 8% on most cosmetics should be eliminated, a proviso of complementary measures on sanitation of Korean people about imported cosmetics. This is a meaning of reformation of prior management(tariffs) by strong ex post management in cosmetics trade. It is important that Korea should construct system of ex post management, for instance, construction of data base on manufacturer, importer, bland name of cosmetics and all ingredients of cosmetics. This is concerned with labelling of cosmetics and cosmeceutical and publication of Korean edition of INCI(International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredient).

  • In this study, we evaluate anti-oxidation, whitening and anti-inflammatory efficacies of Euphorbia jolkini extract for application as a cosmeceutical ingredient. We separated 5 fractions from Euphorbia jolkini extract (70 % MeOH) by MPLC. First and 5th fractions showed a supressive effect on Mn-SOD synthesis in the normal human fibroblasts. They inhibited melanogensis in the B16-F10 melanma cells. Furthermore, 1st and 5th fractions reduced the amounts of $IL-1{\alpha}$, IL-6, COX-II and total NO secreted from the normal human fibroblasts. These results suggest that Euphorbia jolkini extract may be used as an active ingredient in cosmetics.

  • The aim of the study was to assess the cosmeceutical activity of Kalopanax septemlobus leaf and it is possible that can be used as a cosmetic ingredient for applicaiton of cosmetic industries. The concentration of total phenolic compound of hot water and 70% EtOH extracts of K. septemlobus leaf showed 104 mg/L and 125 mg/L respectively. In the result of DPPH(1,1- diphenyl-2-picryl -hydrazyl) scavenging radical activity, 70% EtOH extracts of K. septemlobus leaf showed 93.1% and it was similar to BHA(butylated hydroxyanisole) effect at 1,000ppm concentration. Xanthine oxidase inhibition of hot water extracts and 70% EtOH extracts of K. septemlobus leaf were 46.6% and 60.4% at 1,000ppm, respectively. In these results, K. septemlobus leaf has a great potential as a cosmeceutical ingredient with a natural anti-oxidant source.

  • The aim of the study was to assess the cosmeceutical activity of Pinus rigida Mill. and it is possible that can be used as a cosmetic ingredient for application of cosmetic industries. The concentration of total phenolic compound of P. rigida water soluble fraction and P. rigida ethyl acetate soluble fraction showed 47 mg/L and 601 mg/L respectively. In the result of DPPH scavenging radical activity, P. rigida ethyl acetate soluble fraction showed 86% and it was similar to BHA effect at 10 ppm concentration. Xanthine oxidase inhibition of P. rigida water soluble fraction and P. rigida ethyl acetate soluble fraction were 76.3% and 80.5% at 500 ppm, respectively. In the result of tyrosinase inhibition effect related to skin-whitening, P. rigida water and ethyl acetate soluble fraction showed 42%, 10.9% at a 1,000 ppm. In these results, P. rigida has a great potential as a cosmeceutical ingredient with a natural anti-oxidant source.

  • To develop cosmetics using Jindalae flowers (Rhododendron mucronulatum), the surface tensions of extracts were measured and the properties and stability of cream with extracts were investigated. The surface tension of 0.1% ethanol extract was 30.42 mN/m and that of distilled water was 72.2 mN/m. The surface tension of cream with 0.1% ethanol extract was similar to that of sample cream and the measured pH were weakly alkalic. The surface tension of 1% ethanol extract was the lowest value of 24.98 mN/m, the measured pH of cream with 1% ethanol extract was weakly acidic and the particle size of cream was stable. According to an oscillatory test, linear viscoelastic region was extended by adding of 1% water extract and 1% ethanol extract to cream, indicating that the cream had greater enhanced resistance for preserving inner structure as compared to outside stress. Besides, as a result of the diminished loss angle of ethanol extract cream, the elasticity of cream was increased more than that of sample cream and cream with 0.1% ethanol extract. In contrast, in the case of the increased loss angle of water extract cream, the viscosity of cream was increased. In conclusion, Rhododendron mucronulatum can be deliberated as a cosmetic material because 0.1% water and ethanol extracts showed efficacious physiological activities and cream with 1% extracts could extend linear viscoelastic region.
