Optimal Design of Magnetorheological Shock Absorbers for Passenger Vehicle via Finite Element Method (자기유변유체를 이용한 승용차량 쇽 업소버의 유한요소 최적설계)

  • This paper presents optimal design of controllable magnetorheological(MR) shock absorbers for passenger vehicle. In order to achieve this goal, two MR shock absorbers (one for front suspension; one for rear suspension) are designed using an optimization methodology based on design specifications for a commercial passenger vehicle. The optimization problem is to find optimal geometric dimensions of the magnetic circuits for the front and rear MR shock absorbers in order to improve the performance such as damping force as an objective function. The first order optimization method using commercial finite element method(FEM) software is adopted for the constrained optimization algorithm. After manufacturing the MR shock absorbers with optimally obtained design parameters, their field-dependent damping forces are experimentally evaluated and compared with those of conventional shock absorbers. In addition, vibration control performances of the full-vehicle installed with the proposed MR shock absorbers are evaluated under bump road condition and obstacle avoidance test.

  • The retarder as a hydraulic brake system in order to assist a service brakes in commercial vehicle is operated by automatic and manual mode due to driver. Braking energy by retarder operation is transmitted to the engine radiator of vehicle cooling system, passing through the retarder oil heat exchanger. At this moment, the retarder ECU performs the function that is controlled a braking torque with consideration for automatic and manual mode, temperature of retarder oil/water, engine coolant temperature, vehicle speed, and etc. In this paper, it deals with the design of retarder control logic and the results of retarder braking performance test regarding a cooling system of retarder and vehicle.

  • An autonomous lan vehicle for agriculture(ALVA-II) was developed. A prototype vehicle was made by modifying a commercial tractor. A Navigation sensor system with a geo-magnetic sensor performed the autonomous operations of ALVA-II, such as rotary tilling with headland turnings. A navigation sensor system with a machine vision system was also investigated to control ALVA-II following a work boudnary.

Computational Thermal Flow Analysis of a Cabin Cooler for a Commercial Vehicle (상용차용 캐빈냉방기의 전산 열유동 해석)

  • The steady three-dimensional computational thermal flow analysis using standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was carried out to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a cabin cooler for a commercial vehicle. The heat exchanging method of this cabin cooler is to use the cooling effect of a thermoelectric module. In view of the results so far achieved, the air system resistance of a cabin cooler is about 12.4 Pa as a static pressure, and then the operating point of a cross-flow fan considering in this study is formed in the comparatively low flowrate region. The air temperature difference obtained from the cold part of an thermoelectric module is about $26^{\circ}C$, and the cooling water temperature difference obtained from the hot part of an thermoelectric module is about $3.5^{\circ}C$.

A Study on the Structural Strength Fatigue Improvement of an Axle Shaft for a 3.5-Ton Commercial Vehicle (3.5톤 상용차용 액슬샤프트의 피로강도 개선에 대한 연구)

  • This paper suggests how to improve the fatigue strength of an axle shaft, which is the vulnerable part of an axle shaft system for a 3.5-ton commercial vehicle. The axle shaft is composed of a universal joint with a spider and yoke, yoke shaft, and so on. Structural analysis of the initial axle shaft was conducted to select the exact area for structural strength fatigue improvement, and as a result, the inner/outer yoke shaft and spider were selected. Four cases considered design variables, such as length and thickness, to verify the enhanced durability of the axle shaft, and fatigue analysis was conducted. Finally, we suggest that the axle shaft system satisfied the working conditions for a 3.5-ton commercial vehicle.

  • Restorations of automotive parts have been done ever since the first vehicle was produced. Because the most expensive parts of a vehicle are in the engine system, there have been various restoration methods developed for engine parts. In the case of commercial diesel engines, the fuel injection device is a key and expensive component. It also has a significant effect on vehicle performance. In particular, reduced engine power and increased exhaust gas emissions may result from mechanical damage due to abrasion of the spill valve in the fuel injection system of a diesel engine. In this paper, restoration techniques for damaged parts are applied to restore the abrasion of a spill valve of fuel injection, also called as the "unit injector", of commercial diesel engines. In order to recover the damage, optimized polishing techniques using hard-metal and coating processes are applied. To evaluate restoration techniques for the spill valve, performance and durability tests are performed on a test bench.

Numerical Analysis on the Thermal Flow by a Thermoelectric Module within the Cabin of a Commercial Vehicle (상용차 캐빈 내의 열전모듈에 의한 열유동 수치해석)

Here, the heat exchanging method of this cabin cooler uses the cooling effect of a thermoelectric module. In consequence, the air system resistance of a cooler within the cabin is about 12.1 Pa as a static pressure, and then the operating point of a virtual cross-flow fan considering in this study is formed in the comparatively low flowrate region. The discharging air temperature of a cooler is about $14{\sim}15^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the air cooling temperature difference obtained under the outdoor cabin temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ shows about $7{\sim}9^{\circ}C$ in a driver resting space and about $9{\sim}14^{\circ}C$ in the front of a driver's seat including the space of a driver's foot.

  • One of the causes of malfunction of commercial vehicle is corrosion or wear. In order to prevent corrosion and wear, lubricants have to be supplied periodically. However, the period of lubrication usually depends on operator's judgment. If the period is too short, excess lubricant will cause pollution and unnecessary expenses, where as long periodic supply of lubricant might cause wear, damage and eventual breakdown. Therefore, an automatic lubrication system with predetermined interval will reduce the excessive supply of lubricating oil and prevent wear and damage. This thesis presents an automatic lubrication system which consists of a lubricant pump and an embedded controller. An automatic lubrication operating algorithm is used to operate the lubricant pump and feedback the pressure status of the system using pressure sensors. The developed system shows an efficient periodic supply of lubricant.

  • The development of space launch vehicle is an important step to advance to developed countries in the space area. It is also so risky due to necessity of huge costs and longer development period. The accuracy of cost estimation is important to develop a space launch vehicle successfully and efficiently. It is also necessary to estimate production and operation cost in order to develop commercial space launch vehicle possessing competitiveness. In this paper, Korean factors to be able to reflect the current state of workforce, average working hours and technology readiness level in Korea were analyzed to estimate production and operation cost of space launch vehicles that are developed in Korea. Korean factors have been applied to production and operation cost estimation of KSLV-II based on TRANSCOST. We evaluated the competitiveness level of KSLV-II as the commercial launch vehicle in the commercial launch services market by comparing with cost per flight of foreign launch vehicles.

An Experimental Study for Construction of Aerodynamic Database of the Commercial Propeller (상용 프로펠러 공력 데이터베이스 구축을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • Propeller performance measurement system for commercial propeller was designed and applied to the wind tunnel test for 3 commercial propeller models with diameters of 30 inch. The thrust and torque of the propeller was directly measured by using 6-components balance installed on the rotating axis. The measurement system was validated by using wind tunnel balance calibration equipment. Propeller test stand including measurement and rotating system was validated by using QTP propeller. In the hovering condition, we compared the performance test results and the specifications of the commercial propeller provided by the manufacturer and confirmed that there are differences in the thrust and the torque. We measured the propeller performance with various wind speeds, propeller models and angles of attack and was summarized by thrust coefficients. We confirmed that the trend of the thrust coefficients was different in the low angle of attack and high angle of attack. An aerodynamics database that can be used for future aerodynamic design of an unmanned aerial vehicle was secured.
