  • Utilizing a standard 130-nm CMOS process, a RF frontend is designed at 24 GHz for automotive collision avoidance radar application. Single IF direct conversion receiver (DCR) architecture is adopted to achieve high integration level and to alleviate the DCR problem. The proposed frontend is composed of a two-stage LNA and downconversion mixers. To save power consumption, and to enhance gain and linearity, stacked NMOS-PMOS $g_m$-boosting technique is employed in the design of LNA as the first stage. The switch transistors in the mixing stage are biased in subthreshold region to achieve low power consumption. The single balanced mixer is designed in PMOS transistors and is also realized based on the well-known folded architecture to increase voltage headroom. This frontend circuit features enhancement in gain, linearity, and power dissipation. The proposed circuit showed a maximum conversion gain of 19.6 dB and noise figure of 3 dB at the operation frequency. It also showed input and output return losses of less than -10 dB within bandwidth. Furthermore, the port-to-port isolation illustrated excellent characteristic between two ports. This frontend showed the third-order input intercept point (IIP3) of 3 dBm for the whole circuit with power dissipation of 6.5 mW from a 1.5 V supply.

  • In this paper, we propose a VLSI architecture of an LMS filter based on a Cyclo-static scheduler for fast computation of LMS filteing algorithm which is widely used in adptive filtering area. This process is composed of two steps: scheduling and circuit synthesis. The scheduling step accepts a fully specified flow graph(FSFG) as an input, and generates an optimal Cyclo-static schedule in the sense of the sampling rate, the number of processors, and the input-output delay. Then the generated schedule is transformed so that the number of communication edges between the processors. The circuit synthesis part translates the modified schedule into a complete circuit diagram by performing resource allocations. The VLSI layout generation can be performed easily by an existing silicon compiler.

  • This paper describes the design techniques of the data converters for Multiple-Valued Logic(MVL). A 3.3V low power 4 digit CMOS analog to quaternary converter (AQC) and quaternary to analog converter (QAC) mainly designed with the neuron MOS down literal circuit block has been introduced. The neuron MOS down literal architecture allows the designed AQC and QAC to accept analog and 4 level voltage inputs, and enables the proposed circuits to have the multi-threshold properity. Low power consumption of the AQC and QAC are achieved by utilizing the proposed architecture.

  • This paper describes an implementation of radix-4 trellis parallel architecture and backward state transition control trace back Viterbi decoder, and presents the application results to high speed wireless LAN. The radix-4 parallelized architecture Vietrbi decoder can not only improve the throughput with simple structure, but also have small processing delay time and overhead circuit compared to M-step trellis architecture one. Based on these features, this paper addresses a novel Viterbi decoder which is composed of branch metric computation, architecture of ACS and trace back decoding by sequential control of backward state transition for the implementation of radix-4 trellis parallelized structure. With the proposed architecture, the decoding of variable code rate due to puncturing the base code can easily be implemented by the unified Viterbi decoder. Moreover, any additional circuit and/or peripheral control logic are not required in the proposed decoder architecture. The trace back decoding scheme with backward state transition control can carry out the sequential decoding according to ACS cycle clock without additional circuit for survivor memory control. In order to evaluate the usefulness, the proposed method is applied to channel CODEC of the IEEE 802.11a high speed wireless LAN, and HDL coding simulation results are presented.

  • A simulation study of a 10-bit two-stage DAC was done by using a conventional current switch cell. The DAC adopts the segmented architecture in order to reduce the circuit complexity and the die area. The 10-bit CMOS DAC was designed in 2 blocks, a unary cell matrix for 6 MSBs and a binary weighted array for 4 LSBs, for fabrication in a 0.35-${\mu}m$ CMOS process. To cancel the accumulation of errors in each current cell, a symmetrical switching sequence is applied in the unary cell matrix for 6 MSBs. To ensure high-speed operation, a decoding circuit with one stage latch and a cascode current source were developed. Simulations show that the maximum power consumption of the 10-bit DAC is 74 mW with a sampling frequency of 100 MHz.

  • This study presents a new architecture for a field programmable analog array (FPAA) for use in low-frequency applications, and a generalized circuit realization method for the implementation of nth-order elliptic filters. The proposed designs of both the FPAA and elliptic filters are based on the operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) used in implementing OTA-C filters for biopotential signal processing. The proposed FPAA architecture has a flexible, expandable structure with direct connections between configurable analog blocks (CABs) that eliminates the use of switches. The generalized elliptic filter circuit realization provides a simplified, direct synthetic method for an OTA-C symmetric balanced structure for even/odd-nth-order low-pass filters (LPFs) and notch filters with minimum number of components, using grounded capacitors. The filters are mapped on the FPAA, and both architectures are validated with simulations in LTspice using 90-nm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Both proposed FPAA and filters generalized synthetic method achieve simple, flexible, low-power designs for implementation of biopotential signal processing systems.

  • This paper proposes fluorescent electronic ballast with high power factor and low line input current harmonics. The system performance can be improved by a charged pump circuit. Details of design and circuit operation are described. The proposed electronic ballast is modified from single-stage half bridge class D electronic ballast by adding capacitor parallel with each power switch and setting the circuit parameter to operate under class DE inverter condition. By using this proposed method the DC bus voltage can be reduced around by 50% compare with conventional class D inverter circuit. Because the power switches are operated at zero voltage switching condition and low dv/dt of class DE switching. The experimental results show that the proper frequency of the prototype is around 50 kHz with input power factor of 0.982, $THD_i$ 10.2% at full load and efficiency of more than 90%.
